anxiety medication

walter has terrible anxiety... sometimes it gets better if he is used to the new place i take him too, but were still working on a lot of things. ive been taking him to daycare with me for almost two months and hes still a mess... he is playing with more dogs, but he still needs to be by my side or he really freaks out. also if you remember the story about him not being allowed back at the groomer unless he had a tranquilizer... he also does not like going for walks unless he is being bribed with treats to turn the corner. he used to be a mess at the dog park but the more we went he really got used to it (i think its because theres a lot of area and not as many dogs as daycare so its not as nerve wrecking).

anyway, im thinking about getting him some tranquilizers so i can get him a puppy cut at a groomer or so i can do it myself without making any mistakes from him wiggling around. and if that works out im thinking about possibly getting something for him so he can relax and have funwhen were at day care, although im more nervous about that.

does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with anxiety meds with their sheepies? when i called the vet they really made it seem like it was no big deal and that people use it all the time for car rides, grooming, vet trips, when they have compnay etc. but i still am nervous about the whole idea. any advice would be much appreciated!

A homeopathic herbal remedy I have heard of, but have no experience with, is called, Rescue Remedy. I have heard it works with amazing results, and is used on animals as well as people.

There is a link to some info about it, but there are many pages on the net about it, and it is easily found in all health food stores.
Rescue Remedy is great! It's natural and doesn't "knock them out" like a tranquilizer from the Vet would. You can also try some lavender oil (a little on his nose) - that is supposed to help as well!

I had given Oliver a tranquilizer for thunderstorms once - and it was horrible! He was unable to move - but wasn't asleep. It was like he was paralized (and afraid). I'd never do it again! My sister had to get tranquilizers for her dog last summer (fireworks) and it worked well but she was out cold for a while.

I'd go with the natural remedies first.
You must have been reading my mind! Maxwell is the same way. He hates walkes most of the time, especially if anyone is around. It cowers and yanks at me to go home. We have been going to the dog park on occassion, but all he does is sniff the dogs then walks back to my side. No playing once so ever. I try to take him often, but its tough with my schedule, and when we do go, I have to pick out so many little burrs from his feet. And he does not like that. The only time he feels comfortable is in my yard. there he will bark at people and show some personality, but once we leave, he is so scarred. I realize this may be my fault my not sociallizing him enough, but we did the doggy school, went for walks. Any Advice for Walter and Max would be great!!
Baxter's doctor recommended Bach's Rescue Remedy for when he gets over anxious. It's available at most health food stores. I mix 4-5 drops in an ounce of water although I understand that some people give it to their dogs without mixing it with water. It will not affect any medications that the dog is on.

I use it when I know that there will be a thunderstorm. It does seem to help. I also use it on my stepmothers cat when I have to take him to the vet (which the cat HATES). I just have her give the cat a droperful of the mixture twice a day for a few days before the appointment - and the vet doesn't have to worry about the cat going nuts. Defintely an improvement.
Talk about mind reading--I was thinking last night about a drug treatment for Henry's separataion anxiety. When I got him, he settled down after about 6 months. Then he was fine for about a year, I went to work every day and he stayed home: no problem, he slept on the bed most of the day as far as I could tell.

Several months ago, he started peeing in the house a few days a week. In fact it was an especially bad day when he peed in the house three times in one day and I thought I just couldn't keep him any more that I found this website and vowed to keep trying no matter what his anxieties brought about.

The vet can't find anything wrong with him. He is now confined to the kitchen where the damage to the floor is minimized and is still peeing a few days a week. Even if I come home at lunch to let him out, he still has the problem. This does not appear to be a bladder control problem or a health issue. The only correlation that seems to be true is he has always has an accident on the days someone is in the yard--either the gardeners come or I get a delivery package left on the porch.

We run every morning before I go to work-well I run and Henry does a slow trot next to me, so he gets exercise daily. Henry is not anxious in the way others have described--he LOVES other dogs, people, and anything that catches his eye. But his attraction to new dogs, etc. is an anxious one--he is desperate to get to them, whimpering, pulling on the leash with all his strength (and sometimes dragging me on the ground). Henry is very insecure. Do rescue dogs ever regain their security?

I will try the Rescue Remedy, but would be interested to know if others have tried daily medication for separation anxiety, and if so, does the dog ever come off the medication?
