Anyone have Bamboo? Does it get out of control?

Does anyone have Bamboo planted in your yard?

My question is, does it get out of hand. I've heard it can be a pain to try and contain it.

Yesterday we went to the zoo, and there was bamboo everywhere. It was at least 10 degree's cooler under the bamboo shade, than under regular trees.

Any info would be helpful.

We have a tiki lounge and were thinking of growing some bamboo in the beds that border the windows to that room and everything we read said that it goes absolutely crazy. We abandoned that idea rather rapidly. The stuff that we read said that they grow really well in containers and it's the best way to keep them from growing crazy and taking over your yard.

Good luck and if all else fails, plant the bamboo and get some pandas to keep it under control!
I saw this on The People's Court with "Judge Marilyn Millian, The Hottest Judge on Television."

A guy had planted a bamboo border on his property near his neighbor's line. The bamboo escaped and was causing a problem on his neighbor's property, where his neighbor's gardener was spending an hour every week just keeping the bamboo at bay.

The problem is that bamboo spreads underground. The solution is a metal edging of sorts, which goes down 4 feet (If I recall correctly) and that prevents the underground spreading.

Sounds risky to me. I once had blackberries in a yard. It was there when we got there and it was hard to contain. When we left that place it wasn't very well contained.
Oh yeah, it spreads! Four feet at least Ron! I had a client tell me used 4' wide sheets of fiberglass panels set vertically into the ground to contain the bamboo.........it failed after a few years.

Locally the highway department was redesigning a freeway interchange and the frontage has bamboo on it. I asked the architect what he sprayed the bamboo with.......he said nothing, they would bury it with 10 feet of soil. I bet him the bamboo would be back within 3 years. He laughed and took my bet. I was wrong, it only took 2 years to come back from it's burial.

Some species are more aggressive than others and you can also plant it in a container with the rim above ground. But once any signs of it breaking loose are noticed, get after it. Guess that's why bamboo shoots are used in so many meals........that's one way to control it.

Roundup herbicide works too, but it takes awhile.
We are planning on planting some Bamboo on the property line.
We know how crazy Bamboo can get so we plan to plant it in a pot in the ground.
We've been seriously considering Bamboo as a natural fencing on our property. I've been told the best way to contain it was to take huge plastic trash cans & cut holes out of the bottom and plant them that way. I'm kind of bummed to hear about the 4' fiber glass walls not working, I hope other people will chime in fi they know of better ways to plant it. It is wicked cool. Love the black bamboo trees.
I have about 1/3 acre of the stuff. Do a google on Japaneese Knotweed. I am trying direct injection of glyphosphate directly into the stems. So far:

$250 for injector
$300 for 3 gallons of roundup super concentrate (50% Glyphosphate, enough to do a total kill on 3 acres).
$400 for seasonal farmworker to inject canes.

I hate to think what a landscaper would charge if they were even willing to do stem injection. I am not sure if it even legal in Massachusetts, I got the idea from a University of Oregon study.

It is illigal to plant in many state. You are playing with fire, the plant is evil.

The roots go down 6 feet and it is very difficult to kill. Read the google stories of those spending years or decades trying to get rid of it.
Per "The Garden Guy" show on HGTV that I'm a big fan of...

There are particular species of bamboo that do not multiply via runner. These are easier to control, and will not become the invasive bamboo thickets that can take over properties. As for the rest... they're panda food. Literally... apparently San Francisco Zoo(I think it is them anyhow) has a program where they come up and dig out invasive bamboo from peoples yards to feed to the pandas! How cool is that???

If you want to plant runner bamboo along a property line, you will have to reinforce their growing area with metal plating at least 1' below ground surrounding the area you want the bamboo to stay in.

Research carefully, but it can be done!

Or plant it up here in MN and treat as an annual  Ah the things you learn watching HGTV!

Took this picture at Virgina Beach. Thought it was just beautiful. Was thinking maybe I could do something like that in my yard!!! Will reconsider now. I don't even know how well it would grow here or what it would look like in the winter.
Okay, my question was answered.

Bamboo evil!!
Trees good!!
