Still fostering the momma cat and her four kittens. Still no room at the inn..aka SPCA so they have to remain in my home. Very sad situation as I had to bring them in today for immunizations - the lineup was horrendous..1/2 hr wait. Person in front of me had a stray cat in a box, good thing he (the man that brought it in) decided to wait and not get fed up and let the cat loose. The shelter was overflowing with animals - they had no room for the stray cat and she ended up perched in her tiny cage in the front office on a shelf. A Rottie was left in the corner held by a man that just took it for a walk as due to some mistake another dog had been placed in his kennel and they now had no room for that dog. Another dog was being held by someone outside and they couldn't even enter the office area as now it was filled with people, the Rottie, my four kittens in a kennel and the stray cat. How depressing! People have to come to my home to view the kittens as the shelter has no room for them so I've been busy with all sorts of strangers coming in and out of my place. The SPCA screens them first which is a good thing. One little kitten went to a good home today and I'm crossing my fingers that the others will get that lucky. Overall there are currently 60 kittens in foster at this very moment..means many cats of even as young as a year old at the shelter will not likely get adopted. Again very depressing. I was supposed to have these little ones for possibly only two weeks..but looks as if I may have them much longer. Egads..that means five extra mouths to feed. $$$$$ (the shelter doesn't suppy the volunteers with food or litter...only the litter box) Actually now four as the little tabby was adopted today. Drat I promised not to get attached but so far not one call has come in about the little black kitten, nor the mom. >>repeats mantra to self..must not get attached. Realistically that's so hard however as she is dog friendly as are now the kittens. Anyhow thanks for listening to my ramble and you know that's the reality of shelters all over North America and the world. Wish everyone would spay and neuter their animals. I am keeping my fingers crossed that all the kittens and Momma get adopted.
The SPCA sounds like they are overwhelmed. You are doing a wonderful thing by helping them out. It is such a sad situation to see all of these homeless animals. Makes me want to take all of them home. |
I love your posts about your new cat room and fostering the mama cat and her kittens. My friend Mary loves all animals, but cats are her favorite. She also volunteers for our humane society and agreed to take a very pregnant cat to foster through the birth of her kittens and weaning. Her daughter just went away to her 1st year of college, so she put mama to be in her room.
Last week mama went into labor - just a day after coming to Mary's house. She is young - probably her 1st litter. She got really edgy, and scratched out at Mary. She caught Mary in the eye and eyelid! After a trip to the ER and a CT scan of the eye and some repair, she is back home! Then she finds out the cat HATES dogs - she goes crazy when one of Mary's dogs sniffs in the doorway of the bedroom, and mama cat gets a death hold around Mary's leg and scratches and bites her! Mary's a nurse too, so she cleans it super good and applies ABX ointment. So we have a fundraiser hotdog stand for the humane society at our local Walmart, and here comes Mary to work her shift - looking like she has been punched in the face and her leg all bandaged up! (she had capri's on and the cat got her bare leg). We just laughed - we told Mary not to say a word, or no one would ever volunteer to foster!! |
Hi Again,
Elissa, thanks for your comments..you too have a soft spot for strays so pats on the back to you as well. Dawn - loved reading about Mary's adventures with her new momma cat and kittens and wanted to comment. You never know this "Momma cat" may eventually like dogs as she may just be really experiencing the super protective Tigress syndrome. Same thing happened when I fostered an old cat three years ago and 2 wks later brought in two newborn kittens that had been dumped at the shelter in a paper bag with no mom , nor note. One of the kittens had afterbirth still on her, so they were only hours old. Old cat whom been in my home for 2 wks to get socialized and taken to the vets for spaying - she was nasty at the shelter but so loving and gentle in my home. Well...when she saw the kittens and all the other animals gather around to hear the wailing babies. She went into attack mode!!!! Hissing and snarling at the others..she picked up the babies..and made them hers. No one could even go down the hallway to visit, even my sister whom is a mega cat lover was miffed that this cat would charge down the hallway and attack legs with her sharp claws and scream in an evil banshee like way. Scary!! "Momma cat" wasn't that old..age 7 but hadn't been spayed until she came into my home so we figured she must have had many litters. The only pet she tolerated was my previous OES Shaggy. At that time the computer room where she was placed had a door that didn't quite close and Shaggy spent her days with her body across the threshold. She was 15 and nearing the end of her life and "Momma Cat" must have sensed she meant no harm and also protected the little ones. I always smile at the memory...three species..cat, dog and human (I had to bottle feed every 2 hrs) helped the two little babies to survive. Anyhow, once the babies were weaned and one was adopted by a wonderful person - I ended up keeping one of the kittens and "Momma Cat", she turned back into the gentle cat she was previously. Well...okay she still is referred to as evil Momma cat occasionally as she does give the other cats a swip or two and the dogs if they get two close. Still she can be in the same room with all of them but they give her wide berth..but with humans she is loving and gentle..my sister can't believe it's the same cat! Dawn, maybe mention to Mary that perhaps her "Momma Cat" may also experience the same thing. It's perhaps not dogs or people she dislikes at the moment but due to the birth and the frailty of her babies, the newness of the house, she is just in super attack mode - aka Mother Bear instinct. I bet your friend Mary wins her over with kindness when mom cat sees she means no harm. Tell her I wish her all the best! Hope she wears her "war wounds" with pride as she's doing a good thing. Hooray for the fosters out there..unsung heros in many cases. Marianne and the furballs |
Yeah, we figure she's high on hormones and is very protective. She is sweet and friendly the rest of the time. She purrs like crazy. All of us have been entertained by Mary and her cat troubles, after we were sure she was OK! |
When animals go into MOMMY MODE...watch out...teehee, but that's great.
I had a female cat on the farm, that was the opposite actually. She became extra loving, and affectionate not only to her kittens, but to us as well. Before and after the kittens she was nasty to everyone but me. Her heat took me by total suprise, I was under too much stress and other activities to realize she had symptoms...I never saw any, and didn't get her to the vet in time for spaying. She was part manx...her kittens were adorable and we found homes, I wanted to bring 2 of them to Edmonton with me but I was dating Rob and he said no. But then when we got home, he asked the guys and they said yes, but my aunt found them all homes. So we adopted Jake from the spca, and then adopted Amy. |
