World Christmas Music - HELP!

:rimshot:

I am planning a Christmas program for my elementary school and I would like to focus on select pieces from around the world - one for each grade.

I have "Los Peces en el Rio" for my Mexican piece, "Away in a Manger" coming from England, "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht" from Germany, "Il Est Nest" from France, a Jewish piece called "Candle in the Night" and I'll choose a well-known American piece, too.

My problem is this: I would LOVE to know some traditional Christmas songs from other areas of the world like Canada and Australia, etc. Everywhere I can get some. I have 8 grades and I would like them each to have a piece. Once I get the titles of the songs I can see if I can order them.

Any ideas? Please share what songs you sing at Christmas (traditional or popular) and where you are from. This is mainly to find pieces a little less known in America, but please share any suggestions! I need to order soon!

THANKS :rimshot:

My favorite international christmas album is "Bells of Dublin" by the Chieftans. there are many songs on there that are specific to the UK. And it is beautiful music!
A very popular Canadian Christmas song is The 12 Days of Christmas performed by Bob and Doug MacKenzie.

This was taught to me as a child.. all Canadian children learn this song even before their ABC's.

If you are interested.. here is the link to the words.

Did you search in the iTunes music store? You can search by "world" and maybe you'd have some luck that way.

You're allowed to celebrate "Christmas" and not "Holiday?"

How fun! I don't think I've heard this song. A more popular Hanukah song might be "I Have a Little Dreidel".

Just a thought!
Wow, I just did a brief search on the web and found a lot. However, the song selection was mainly the common carols sung in different languages.

Good info there, maybe you can modify what you are doing if you can't find other ethnic carols.

Don't forget "Oh Tannenbaum" whch is the German original to "Oh Christmas Tree" that one might be nice for younger children, because they already know the meanings (sorta, some of the words are different) and they can follow the tune along. :D

I teach at a private Christian school!

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I really like them! I have done many searches on-line but wanted to be true to what really happens in the different countries. It can also be hard to find sheet music for these types of songs instead of just CDs etc. I'm having a hard time with the Spanish one now because of that. I have the words and the CD but I don't have the sheet music which is extremely helpful for teaching. :D

Oh yeah for Canadian it's gotta be Bob and Doug....

How sad is that? It's true you know, I don't know ANYONE who doesn't know Bob and Doug LOL

Or maybe that just points to our laid back attitude and sense of humour!

I just *have* to post it.... LOL (it's just copied and pasted)

Are you sure bob and doug aren't Aussies LOL
LOVE IT!!!!!!! These are great - I think the kindergartners would just have SOOOO much fun learning the Aussie 12 days of Christmas - I think we may just do a little unit on Australian animals with that song as culmination! Christmas is fun everywhere, huh?! :D
