Out of Control Diarrhea

Took London to the vet today as the diarrhea had gotten worse. They did the fecal culture but it did't come up with anything. No fever, no vomiting, and best of all - no idea why. Since the diarrhea was so bad they decided to keep her overnight up on a rack in the kennel and start her on some meds to calm the bowel irritation down and to ease her stomach.

They are going to run some blood work. He said with her history of eating dirt, roots, plant matter, etc... who knows what she might have gotten into.

I feel like such a horrid mother for leaving her there, but....

P.S. Does anyone know how to get poop out of a couch cushion?

I am so sorry London is still ailing! You are a great mother for leaving her there because that will help ensure she stays hydrated while they figure out what is going on with her. . . Hope she gets well soon!
Awww... you did the best thing... a puppy can get dehydrated so quickly, and even if it is only due to something she ate, this can wear her down and compromise her immune system, so being with the vet to help her through it quickly is the best thing for her :)

I hope she's feeling better fast :)
Yipes! Can the cushion cover be removed? I'd treat them separately. With the fabric you can spot wash with an extremely mild soap, whipped up into a froth and then use the froth to clean, removing as quickly as possible with a clean cloth, blotting. Do what you can, let it dry and vacuum both side and, if needed do again.

Another option is the enzyme cleaners specially made for pee, poop and vomit removal from our pets. They can even be used with cleaning machines. The trick with both is to clean well, but quickly and then blot dry as best as possible.

The inside stuff, well depends on what it's made from. Clean as above or you may end up replacing the stuffing.

I find cleaning both together keeps the piece wet too long and the fabric will stain.

If you can't separate the two, do what you can or call in the professionals ASAP
Sounds like a good excuse to buy a new couch to me. That's what we did with our carpet ;) I know our carpet cleaner generally got stains out pretty well and it had an attachment for furniture.
Sorry to hear about London, I hope she feels better soon.
Poor sweety. I hope she's back to her normal self soon!
Poor poppit, hope it all settles down soon. Don't feel bad about leaving her there she really is in the best place with how severe it is at the moment. They can keep her hydrated which is important for a bub.

Thinking of you and hope you save your cushion too :?
The diagnosis was gastro intestinal virus - a stomach bug. They gave her fluids and sent her home today with an anti diarrhea medication and some special diet food. Her poop is still watery but more form to it and not just water.

Thanks to all for the advice and support.
I'm glad to here London is getting better. I have several dog friends who report that they have dogs having flu symptoms in the past week or so also. They didn't know what caused it or where they got it form with their dogs either.
Ahhh....poor baby! Sorry she had such a bad time with the stomach bug. :( But, I'm glad she's home again and feeling a little better. :)

Are the meds & special food helping? :?
Poor little girl!! I hope she's feeling better by now, and I hope you can clean your sofa cushion!!
:?: Hi!!! My dog Kyra has had diarrhea on and off for about 3weeks..we have tried everything including stating to change her food. Now her stool is black, I'm not sre if it's the new food or Kaopectate? We re giving her 1/2 cup of rice,1/2 burger and 1/4 Pro Plan also 1tbsp of Kaopectate and 1tbsp. of yogurt. Any suggestions?
Yes, if it's going on this long and now she has a black stool, I'd call your vet.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Definately take her to the vet, a black stool is usually an indication of blood in the stool. She has probably got inflamation/scouring in the bowel and needs something to help that settle down & heal.

A vet will be able to precribe something too to help settle the diarhea and something for the inflamation too.

Best wishes and I hope she is fine soon. You have been feeding her a good diet for her diarhea, but she probably needs a little bit of medication to help clear her up & calm everything down. :D Also a vet can tell you wether they think it is a dietry problem causing it or maybe some sort of bug.
Kaopectate and or pepto bismol will make the stool black, but if it is going on this long, Id definately take her to a vet!!
Good luck, we hope she feels better soon!
