We live in Illinois, what time of year is it best to shave him? Now? If not, I was thinking maybe March so he can take advantage of that spring/summer short do. I'm ok with him looking a little awkward fur wise if it means waiting till spring. |
|
I think you can shave him down now since it's still warm outside and should be for another month or so. His coat will grow back very quickly. Buy him a sweater/coat just in case!
I remember when we first started at our groomer and she SHAVED Annie in the middle of the winter. I was so upset and all the large size coats were picked over. I ended up finding an ugly one on clearance at Petsmart, but I felt better when she had it on. |
We usually cut izzie really short may/june and then again at the beginning of august. She may have a haircut in between, but not too short. Does Hendrix need to be cut really short...or could a little cut work to disguise the butt mishap? |
Maybe you can just wait the rear out a little and make it into some show styling in the meantime? |
Maybe I'll take Hendrix to get his nails cut by the groomer and see what she thinks, everytime I go in there though I feel like they want my money and say "you should get it cut now."
Basically Hendrix's left cheek is a puppy cut I take it the consensus is to wait till spring? Anyone have some pants he can borrow? |
Shave the other side, paint it red and say he's a baboon just in time for halloween! |
I think March would be good. I'll take a current picture of Clyde tonight. He was cut down at the end of April but it'll give you an idea of how long it'll take to grow back from that point and his preparedness for winter, which he will be. He's about 4 1/2 inches in most places and a little over 5 in others. Apparently he grows in spurts. |
A picture would be great, thank you! |
Here you go. I took all sides you could see him all around.
Face: Side 1: Side 2: Chest: |
Great pictures, thank you so much! So that's about 5 months of growth. If I get Hendrix cut in March I think he should be good. March is still cold here, but a sweater for the month will do.
His poor rump, it's pretty short. But I think he'll enjoy the buzz cut for the spring/summer. |
I can't believe no one like my baboon comment!! I am officially offended! |

We got kind of late with clipping Ollie one year - I think it was the 1st of November. That was a bit late, but he actually did well. He had about 1/2 inch of hair. He was very active and warm blooded, so I think he actually enjoyed being in the house more with the short coat. Otherwise with more coat, he would purposely go lay in the snow and stay outside for hours! We have a picture of him laying on a snowcovered bench, on his side with his feet hanging off - sleeping! |
The trim on his butt isn't that bad! No monkey butt for my pup. |
i actually like shaving walter down in august so that his coat is reasonable in winter... i find that he gets matted very easily if he plays in the snow with a long coat |
Wow. I am definitely in the minority. Oscar gets shaved to an inch and a quarter every 6 weeks in the summer, and every 8 weeks throughout the winter. And come January, he still wants to lay in a snowbank! Here in Northern Illinois, we keep the temp in our house at a balmy 68 degrees in the winter, and Oscar still pants and sleeps on the tile floor, rather than the carpeting. We never, ever get to use our fireplace, as he lays on the granite hearth to cool off! The poor dog would keel over from heatstroke if I ever came near him with a coat.
Do I have the only sheepie that "runs hot"? |

Nope, both our Winston and Maggie loved the snow even with short coats. We shaved them down whenever they needed it, which was two or three times a year. Maggie was sensitive to the cold for about a week after a haircut so we bought her an XXL dog sweatshirt to wear at that time. The gray shirt almost matched her hair and didn't look cutesy like most doggie sweaters. |
Ollie was hot - he loved laying outside in the cold weather. In the winter he loved to lay on the cold cement floor on the porch. He never, ever laid on our bed or furniture - he got way too hot.
Chewie has been laying on the tile area that our little cast iron wood stove is on. He likes the coolness instead of the surrounding carpet. He's in for a shock when we get the stove started up soon! |
When it gets cold here. Yeah, it does get cold here.
We get down into the 30's sometimes at night in the winter. Anyhow... Pepsi will go outside...when it gets cold here and lounge by the pool lying on the concrete with the wind blowing and he's in heaven. The colder it is the longer he spends outside. |
Norman was always into being cold. If you took everybody outside in the snow, he would lay down and get covered in snow. You had to call him to find him when the rest of the gang was done playing! Then he'd huff at you when you made him come in, as if you were the wrong one and he was fine outside!!
Carl, on the other hand, is a complete wuss! He has about an inch and a half of coat now and is still cold. |
Well, it's happening on Sunday, September 17th. My baby boy is going in for his shave. We took him to the groomer to get his nails cut and she pretty much convinced us not to wait. She said the matts on his ears were too thick and would cause blood circulation problems real soon. With that said, we booked the appointment.
She said he might be cold, so we may want to put a shirt on him. So, I've gone on cafepress.com and bought him a shirt that said "I'm not wearing any underwear." |
hahahaha |

LMAO, that's so funny! |
I love cafepress! There were a lot of other funny ones, a close second "Bitches love me" and one that had a picture of a dog licking his special area saying, "If you could, you would too." |
I bought one for Clyde a long time ago that says "Fat kids are harder to kidnap" but it didn't fit. I've also always enjoyed "My other ride is your leg." |
It says their XXL goes to 80lbs and Hendrix is 86lbs, hope it fits! I'm sure with all his hair gone, there's 6lbs out the door. |

Maybe he should have "Fat kids are harder to kidnap." |
Those are funny!
But,I've never seen them. Links? |
I hope this link works!

Do you recommend shaving your oes? I live in Colorado (in the mountains) and unlike Denver (temps in the 90-100) during the summer, we hardly ever get temperatures up above 80-85, and that is hot. The summer here is only June - August. Already snowed at my house the season is almost here... Just would like some input from other owners, as I do not have my puppy yet, get him in 2-3 wks.
Thanks Shon |
I like Clydes length right now in the pics...Do groomers always shave real short, or can I find one to cute the length that clyde is right now?? I personally think when the OES are shaved real short, they look like giant poodles...SOrry, not a fan of Poodles, giant or small
I am going to try and print the pics of Clyde so in the spring I can take them and say, I want this length! I am planning to let Allie keep growing her hair out till March, being she is still a pup in my eyes! |
shon: We shave ours for 2 reasons - 1:heat and 2: getting too much junk stuck in the long hair. Being in MN, we get extremes - hot and humid summers and cold winters. We also live on a farm and have lots of "wild" areas with weeds, burrs and other things that love to get in a dog's coat. We don't mind the brushing, but when it involves getting stuff like that out of the coat on a daily basis, it gets old. Especially now in the fall with all the weed seeds and burrs. So we eventually get a cut to make life easier.
ccnwater: I always thought that they needed to be clipped "down to the skin". That was what usually happened. Then we took Ollie to a private groomer, who has her own home business. (vs. the big shops in pet supplies, etc.) The big shops need to do lots of dogs, get them in and out in a hurry. The difference was amazing. Ollie came home neat and trimmed, but still looked like an OES! I would check around 1st before you make an appointment. (Lurk and observe!?) There is a big range of skill and time difference out there. Just make sure there aren't tangles and mats that go to the skin. Then the kindest thing is to clip the dog down. It takes a lot of work for the groomer and tolerance on the dog's part to get bad mats out. |

I know one of the most important things in just doing a trim is to keep the dog as matt free as possible otherwise they're definitely going to want to cut shorter. |
