Diarrhea - From Teething?

London's puppy teeth are becoming loose and a couple are starting to bleed. I am not sure but I think this may be causing her to have the liquid (and I do mean liquid) poop. Anybody know how much Immodium AD I can give her? Or should I? Thank God we keep a very thick king size comforter over the couch - she has gone on that and on the floor in several spots.

Not uncommon to get the liquid runs when they are teething. Probably better to ring the vet for dosage for her weight and age being a pupper.

Keep her on a fairly bland diet till all settles down for you, take her off the dry as that is only going to go through her system like a spray gun out the other end if she is that loose 8O

Boiled rice and cooked chicken flesh, no skin from the chicken, should help until her system settles down a bit, and take it real slow introducing her back onto her kibble. Make sure too she is getting plenty of water to stop dehydration as that happens quickly in a pup.
Poor London. Hope she is feeling better soon.
Poor London and Poor Wynette!

I agree that a phone call to the vet for dosage, and chicken/rice diet should really help. Vet might want to look at a stool sample.
Vet said that it sounds like her teeth since her poop has NO solid parts - straight watery poop and the color is still the color of poop. He said give her 1/4 tablet of immodium and then if still needed in two hours give her another 1/4 tablet but that should take care of it. And he also told me be prepared for the next few weeks during the teething process. 8O She doesn't seem to be letting this slow her down at all she still all bouncy.

I think it should be a mandate before anyone gets a sheepie - you must own a carpet shampoo machine and have a large capacity washer and dryer. Thank goodness I have both as I needed them tonight.

Lisa, thanks for the tips on the diet and about the water. I have been letting her chew on ice cubes since I read your response. She is chewing away.

She has not been crated for a couple of months now as she was house broken but I think we will put her back in the crate for tonight - just in case the immodium doesn't work.
Wynette miss 1 feed with her too till she has had a few doses of the immodium, it won't hurt her to miss one meal and will help the immodium start to line the bowel and settle her system down a bit.

Then next feed a very small serve of the chicken and rice and see how she goes from there.

Glad she likes her ice cubes and she is spritely and bouncy too, blasted teething 8)
Hope she's feeling better Wynette :)
She still has the runs. May run her into the vet this morning to have her checked out.
I hope London feels better soon!

When Chipper had the "runs", we used 1/2 tsp of Immodium every four hours (the cherry flavor one)... our vet told us that liquid is absorbed quicker; and brown rice seemed to work wonders for us too- he had great improvement!!!!
Old English Sheepdogs are one of several breeds that can have a mutated MDR1 gene. Most herding breeds have this issue (we have Australian Shepherds). The point is that for dogs with one or two copies of the mutated MDR1 gene in their DNA, Imodium can cause serious problems and should not ever be given to them. Google Washington State University (they are the experts in this area) and MDR1 multi-drug sensitivity for more info. Cut/pasted from their website:

Loperamide (ImodiumTM; antidiarrheal agent). At doses used to treat diarrhea, this drug will cause neurological toxicity in dogs with the MDR1 mutation. This drug should be avoided in all dogs with the MDR1 mutation.

You can test your dog for the presence of this mutation rather easily. Again, WSU Veterinary school is the place to start. IMO, no decent vet would simply prescribe Imodium to one of these breeds without first having this DNA test done.
I had not heard about Immodium and the MDR1 gene, but did know it applied to several other medicines. Kdog needed to be tested before we began her heartworm cure. Our vet has Aussies so knew about the problem and thanked me for brining it up as she had forgotten to mention it.

You order the test strip from the lab, swab the inside of the mouth, cheek (oh they love that) reseal and send off. Tests are done only one day a week so don't expect an immediate turn around, it may take 10 days. Kdog came back negative.

I have a big bag of brown rice just for "bad tummies." With only one dog it's not used like it was before.

Thanks Lisa, that brought back memories of Jack, white carpet and freshly painted walls.
