We live in Atlanta, GA. It is something of a warm and humid climate and I am beginning to wonder if the weather is affecting our Shayleigh's coat. You see, no matter what I try I just can't get her coat to be as full and fluffy as an ideal OES coat should be. Does the warmer weather prohibit the growth and density of the undercoat? Is the undercoat what gives the OES its fluffiness? We bathe Shayleigh monthly. Full comb out weekly (taking care to minimize hair loss in the process). A light brushing every other day. Are we groooming too much? Hope not as mats form quickly if she's left untouched for long. Those of you in warm climates, do your dogs get the full fluffy OES coat as we see on televised dog shows? Any advice or feedback you might offer would be appreciated. Thanks! |

From reading books they say not to wash the grey hair too much, for it will make it flat.I have also read the show dogs use something to get the coat on their hair to fluff up like that.Maybe someone else has a better answer. |
I live in Charleston, SC and Max, my 10 month old's, hair is always changing. Before I washed him over the weekend he was quite flat and dull, but after the bath, he fluffed right up. His White hair is much fluffier than the grey and is not as coarse either. But after he is outside for some time it becomes flat, could be the humidity, since its 100% right now. I am thinking of getting hima puppy cut, but that is another topic for today. |
with our show shogs we seldom give a full bath, maybe onve twice a year, at other times they get a top and tail wash and if the feet are dirty just the feet to elbows no further, washing does soften the coat, to get them looking in i.e show condition a lot of it is in the brushing, there are books/videos on this , if they are just pets then there is no need to do any of this, but lots of practice with a brush to get the shape you want.
lightly snipping the back hair will make it stand up also. Hope it helps Huggles B-eye |
B eye, I would love to learn more from someone with experience showing, I plan to show my two girls in the spring, but have no idea how to groom for show. If you could email me that would be great, you can click on the email button at the bottom of my post. |
I would also like any information you would be able to give. I am hoping to get Jack and Annabelle out in the show's soon, and I have read and tried to do the grooming myself, it just never looks right. Such as trimming the feet and legs to look like pillars. There are a few others, that I just can't seem to do right. Any help would be appreciated!
