We are leaving around supper time, and hope to drive right through all nite. Most of the trip is through hills, rocks and deep woods, and around Lake Superior is gets foggy at nite. We have been warned to watch out for moose and deer along the highway in the dark. The family we will be staying with have a 18 year old daughter who hit a beer 3 weeks ago. We have been sorting his stuff and packing for a couple weeks, now. Tonite there are a bunch of teenagers in my backyard and a bonfire and loud music, and much laughing and shourting...... I hear the clinking of bottles and smell of smoke...and not from the fire pit, either.. It is with really mixed feelings that we get ready for this trip. On one hand he is well-prepared to take care of himself and is very responsible. On the other hand....he is our baby...the first-born....and he still needs us...I hope! He is going to school to be a teacher....If you ask him why he picked teaching he will tell you it is because he wants an easy job He still has a lot to learn. My younger boy and my brother-in-law will be here to take care of the pooches. I will get my doggie fix because where we will be staying they have a 7 month old flat-coated retreiver who apparently jumps up on people so we have been warned... Sigh. This is is going to be very hard, and it will be a long, quiet trip home, I think. |

Wow that is a long trip!
Of course he still needs you, he will always need his Mommy. Have a safe trip and try not to cry too much until after you leave! |
Oh Nicole you have my sympathy. I went through it 2 years ago when my oldest son had to be driven to Michigan to the university there. It is a 17 hr drive from Louisiana. I get to see him once a year for 2 weeks as he works full time in addition to going to school. He also is going to be a secondary education teacher (math) and a coach. But his reason for being a teacher is because he loves teaching and loves kids.
I won't tell you it gets easier as time goes by because it doesn't. They will always be your little boy. <<<<Hugs>>>> |
(((HUGE HUGS))) |
Doesn't he know that smoked meat is bad for you?
Good luck and Bon Voyage! Drive safely, and try to be strong. |
Best wishes and all great things for your son Nicole, enjoy the trip too
Mine leaves on the plane on SUNDAY!!!! Still packing for him, yes one last thing that a mom can do and fuss over as he will have months away from me to get over it LOL He is my youngest so this is going to be HARD on me I hope you have a safe and good trip for your special time together. Thinking of you and know exactly how you are feeling. |
Yep, been there, done that. Not an easy thing to do, by any stretch of the imagination. Taking the first one to school is the toughest.
When we left our son at school for the first time, we said our good-byes and got our hugs, with me fighting back tears BIG time. And for as strong as he pretended to be, when he hugged me, he hugged a little harder and held on a little longer. That meant the WORLD to me. He was telling me that he was ready to start on this new phase in his life, but he was a little scared at the same time. And for about 2 months after he got there, whenever we talked to him, he didn't seem to want to get off the phone. Just the little things a mom picks up on. Good luck!! It will be a bittersweet trip and one you'll always remember. Big HUGS to you! |
Awwww *hugs* Nicole, he'll do just fine
I'm not looking forward to that day at all either... I have a couple more years before I have to worry about it though. Have a safe trip! |
Have a safe trip!
It'll be okay... |
aww good luck My parents took it hard when I decided to attend a college in Rochester, NY (im from California) and even harder when they found out that I decided to stay here post college.
Heard it's a good school- he must be so excited! |
((((HUGS))))) It is never easy and I don't think it gets any easier when they get older. |
I know this was a tiny part of your post, but becoming a teacher b/c it's EASY Man that is what i am going to school for and he might just do a 180 after he sits down in his 1st education class. Education Professors are the most uptight, detail oriented overacheirvers i have ever met!!! I have to bust my butt day in and day out to make it in school.
Ok sorry, long day of class, i felt compelled to rant Now onto what your post actually was concerning, your oldest transitioning into the adult-student world. It is great that you are going with him, it'll help him remember where his supprot base is always gonna be, you See, isn't that better Shannon |
