Allie turning 6 months old, how much to feed?

Right now Allie eats 3 times a day, 1 cup at a time...I feed her the Natural Balance, Nutro for large breeds. Saturday she will turn 6 months, my friend who has Boxers, still feeds 3 times a day, even though they are not pups anymore. Any advice here? I am home most of the day, so could feed the lunch time still. Is there a reason to not feed 3 times a day? How much should I give her if I go to 2 times, or if I stay at 3 times? Never had a dog before, always feed cats! All day they had there food out...Thanks for advice!

Chipper just turned 6 months, and he is fed twice a day, 2 cups at each feeding. We have also changed him from Puppy kibble to Adult kibble, per our vets instruction.

I am not an expert, just sharing what we do... possibly check with your vet as well.... although this Forum is a wealth of information and sharing of great intelligence!
I agree, by 6 months they can be taken down to twice a day. That's what I do now for all the guys, twice a day. The reason is to feed two small amounts rather than 1 large meal that might bring on bloat. As to how much, you'll have to be the judge. You should be able to feel the ribs easily, but not let your fingers fall between the ribs as if they are starving. The backbone should be padded on both sides, starving dogs will have exposed backbone sides. Finally the poop should be poop, not puddles. Over feeding brings on soft stools.

What are you feeding? By six months they should be on a good adult food.
Right now she is on Nutro puppy for large breeds...So you think I should go to an adult food next week? Right now she is 37pds, and I can feel her ribs, but she is not bony and is very solid...Of course with the 3 feedings a day, she also gets her treats! So maybe I should try 2 times a day, 2 cups at a time? With an adult food? She will see the vet in a few weeks, when she goes to get spayed..Was going to ask her opinion also, but being you guys are all experts with OES, will most likely go on your advice!
We didn't change Clyde over to adult food until closer to 9 months, per our vet's suggestion. I'd consult with your vet and see what her opinion is since she knows your dog best.

I free feed both of my boys and have since they were both about 6 to 8 months. Neither one of them are pigs for food so they eat when they're hungry. I put out food once in the morning and once in the evening and they graze all day.
Nutro puppy is pretty good stuff. Since she's only 37 pounds I'd put off the weaning for another month....or even up to 9 months as mentioned above. When you begin the change, go SLOW. Make the weaning last at least 4 weeks so she doesn't noticed the difference.

(the larger the dog breed, the sooner you should consider getting them off the puppy stuff as the extra protein seems to overstimulate growth. )

There's really nothing wrong with three feedings a day other than the inconvenience and the extra pooping. Just keep feeling the dog, a pudgy dog is never good.

With dogs, slow is the word when changing food regimes.
Thanks for the info and advice! I think I will also leave her on 3 feedings for a couple more months...She does not seem to want more after she eats her meal and like I said, can feel the ribs, but not bad. The bag ofcourse says I should be feeding any where from 3 cups, up to 5 cups a day.
yeah right, unless you want a blimp.......or she never stops running all day. those same bags said I should have fed my St. Bernard 10 cups a day.......in HIS dreams. He got 4.
Foz eats only twice a day now. Vet said we can increase to 2 1/2 cups twice a day. Total of 5 cups of Nutro puppy food a day 8O
Wow Stacey! How big is Foz? And he is still on the puppy food? His age again? Sorry, hard to keep all these pups ages in my brain!
Maybe I am under feeding Allie? But she seems to be full after her meals....
