I have 3 foster dogs now plus my own and need help with this. I just helped one dog out of the pool because the top knot holder fell out and he fell in because he couldn't see where he was going... I am currently using clear small bands -- I think they were from a horse supply place... They only stay in place a few hours. Marie www.dixieoesrescue.org |

I don't need to do a topknot yet, but I've seen people use hair barrettes (that humans would use) - one that is secure, plain silver with no fancy decoration on it.
Or, I've heard of using small clear elastics, like the ones kids use for their braces. It sounds like that's what you've been using and it isn't working for you. Try a plain barrette or clip - a good, secure one. |
I just use little colored elastics. Plain rubber bands hold in for a week or more. |
You can see Panda's little elastic in this pic, it's yellow this week LOL

I have a whole supply of little colored rubber bands, too. They worked with Mopsey and Prissy when I put their hair up - at least for a while! |
I posted this awhile back but rather than a link, I'll just repost it!
Just thought I'd share this since I'm always interested to hear new things that work well! Perhaps some of you are already familiar with these, but I've recently bought the Goody "Stay Put" sports elastics from Target for Clyde's topknot and they stay in and keep the hair back really well. They've got a little bit of rubber on the elastic to really grip the hair and keep it from slipping. It actually survived a 1 1/2 hour trip to the dog park and his hair wasn't even in his eyes! Much better than a regular elastic and it's still pretty gentle on the hair too. Those took a lot of roughhousing and his hair always stayed well. I can't wait until I have to use them again! |
We have some white ones intended for horses. Very cheap and they come in several sizes. Check the local pet store. |
