I had my "must do" list and the major work has been done. Thinking I'd sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labor aka sip lemonade on my newly painted porch, and enjoy the fountain on the fishpond and flowers in the garden. I do need to rest up before the start of the school year (Sept 5th). I'm also enrolled in an autism course starting on the 28th, which is from 8:30-3:30 daily. So planned on "taking it easy" this week...then noticed the blinds in my sons room. Ewwww they are so dusty and some of the slats are broken. Well..maybe I'll just take them down and clean them. He had gone camping for 4 days so it's a good time to do it. Nope they weren't salvageable so I bought new white ones. The window is very long.. aprox 120 inches so buy two blinds at 60 inches wide. (Can't afford custom made ones for that length so purchase really two packs of standard size). Found some for the incredible deal of 10 dollars each at a sale! Yuck the very deep window sill..didn't even come clean with TSP. Well maybe needs painting first, before the blinds go up. Eww now the three doors downstairs look kinda dingy compared to the freshly painted window sill. I'd better paint those too. Yuck again, now the moldings around the door look dingy compared to the freshly painted doors. I'd better paint those. Hmm what a mess with all the books...would be much better to have some book shelves. Okay so I bought some and groan now they need to be put together. Okay that means rearranging the furniture a bit. Huff and Puff... Tada!! Blinds ready to go up....whazzat...1/2 too long at each end? Grrr means I have to cut the blinds 1/2 inch on both. Hmmm where's my jigsaw and scissors? Somewhere in that time frame I also installed carpeting going up the stairs. Laminating on stairs is really tricky so used commercial aka dog friendly stuff. Took down the basketball hoop and backboard that had been drilled to the siding of my house, had layers of wood and lagbolts behind it. Neighbors made the mistake of asking if I need help. Took three of us (we each had our own ladders - 1 hr to take it down. Think the previous owners thought the thing would fall on a kids head or something and had secured it tightly. (more huffing and puffing) 4 days later I finish...now I can sit back and take it easy this week. Riiiiiiiiing....Riiiiiiiiiing - I pick up the phone. Anxious coordinator of the Humane Society calls and they are desperate for volunteers as healthy animals were put down last month due to lack of space. Can I PLEASE foster a mom with kittens asap? I have a spare room!!! Oh wait.....all the "junk" from all my home reno's are in there...boxes and boxes of stuff. Ummm okay means I have to clear it out by tomorrow morning. That's only a couple hours from now... Need a quiet room for the mom cat and her kittens. Yup...I can do that. Means I'll have to work throughout the night to get it ready...but this is important. Maybe I can sleep in until 8 am this weekend? >>Marianne |

Marianne !!!!! slow down, I have a headache now and need to go lie down just reading your post, did make me laugh though, as I just imagined you doing everything with 10 pairs of hands LOL !!! |
I often joke I must have been evil in my former life...as I'm making amends in this lifetime...haaaa haaaa
>>No rest for the wicked. Marianne Yikes lots of typos in my previous post. |
I think it's a sickness......kinda like people who have plastic surgery over and over and over
Don't worry school will be starting up soon and you will be too busy!!!!!!!!!!! |
LOL. I'm going to fly you down here to visit for a while. |
It never fail how one project leads to another.
You need to go back to work so you can get some rest!!! |
you gotta cut back to decaf........ |
Marianne...I don't think I have gotten that much done around the house in the last three years combined!!! Forget sleeping in until 8am on the weekend...I would just sleep through the whole weekend |
I'm exhausted just reading your post |
Marianne, you are one amazing person.
I wish I had half your energy and drive! Just think though, if you should decide to sell the house, you are that much farther ahead. You are such an inspiration to me. Now about getting me some of that energy... Shellie |
Makes me tired just reading it. I wish I had your energy and drive too.
I feel like I've wasted my whole summer and accomplished nothing, my house needs so much work, just basic re organizing, maybe a bit of painting, not much really.... but I keep putting it off til the kids go back to school. By then I'm sure I'll find another reason to procastinate some more. |

lol....I was thinking the same thing.....and remodeling DOES snowball...it may start out small ie one project, but then leads to another and another and another....I think thats why B hasnt wanted to to anything inside the house...he knows what it is going to lead to.....lol.. bless you Marianne...take a break...youre making ME tired! |
Marianne,
You have added value to your home by doing the improvements. Think of it as future money in the bank. I was in so much pain from removing the wallpaper from Ryan's room two summers ago that I haven't wanted to do it again. Our bedroom has wallpaper on one wall. The LONG wall. Not only is it just one type of wallpaper. But she overlapped it with borders and half of the ugly wallpaper was put on upside down. Then there is wallpaper in the master bath. Same ugly stuff. Billy said he was going to do our room this summer and it didn't happen. We also desperately need new flooring in there. The carpeting is permantly stains from the previous owners dogs. One of these day........ I really wish I wasn't sick and could do this stuff myself. It would have been done a long time ago..... |
Same here, I have an obsessive nature that when I start something nothing else gets done until that project is done.
Hubby knows not to let me start something, but this summer we decided our fence needed repainting. We bought 1 can of white, well I can;t stay in the lines and now need the grey to do the slates...white and grey fence. The deck was ugly, and we ripped the lattice off the bottom, bought paint to make it new like the fence. Dog run was always a temporary solution, so ripped it down to finish the fence. The area of grass I ripped out finally got the bark and trees in it. Went to my dad's to return his truck, came home with rocks to finish off the project. This week I am supposed to finish painting the underside of our deck so we can put up new walls and remake our storage shed. Make a new dog run, and now I want a new dog house...Remy doesn't sleep in there but it is still nice to have. Another thing is the kids playhouse, which was taken over by crab spiders and a beehive. We need to make plywood walls and seal up the corner so those critter stay out. And we still want one more weekend of camping before school starts...LOL. |
Marianne, you're nuts!
But I totally am the same way--once I start seeing stuff and actually start doing them, I can't stop! I was at Home Depot this weekend and I was browsing in the paint section, thinking what colors I needed, but I've run out of rooms to paint! But I still wanted to paint some more. |
Steph...oooo oooo oooo....come over to my house, pretty please!!!!! I have A LOT of walls needing to be painted....btw...where are the finished kitchen pictures????
sorry marianne, no hijack intended... |
Well you realize I'm writing about all the home reno stuff not to make anyone else feel bad in comparison. Remember it's taken five years of stuff piling up and the first time in 17 years I've been off for the summer. LOL.
I had to tell SOMEONE!!! Tis boring stuff and my friends would probably fade out after a while...least you guys are stuck reading the forum..or can skip it..hee hee. I also am a horrible procrastinator...really I am...and finally got sick of the mess and clutter. No one else was going to do it..so had to force myself. Hey got those cute adorable little kittens!!! Ohmygosh...I can see me now spending all my free time just hanging out in the kitten room! Marianne and the furballs |
Marianne wrote: Hey got those cute adorable little kittens!!! Ohmygosh...I can see me now spending all my free time just hanging out in the kitten room! Marianne and the furballs Good reason to do home reno...so you can have a kitten room!! Some people have craft rooms or media rooms...you can have a dedicated kitten room. |
GAWD Marianne I have only just started renos after deciding not to move and at the moment sorting out over 20 years of accumulated junk. LOL
I have decided I am a hoarder, found things in cupbaords I forgot was there Like christmas all over again at the moment. So my journey has just started, new appliances are wonderful, am burning heaps of stuff in the new fan forced oven but still have a lot more to do over the next couple of months with the rest of the house. Now you have me running scared, how bad is this addiction Also wondering how many years it will be till I have finished too LOL |
My advice Lisa and anyone else - Don't get a van!!! Especially one of those long extended ones...it was the start of all my troubles.
You see for years I would come across "amazing stuff" but due to driving a tiny sports car I had to rely on friends to help me. Not wanting to trouble anyone..think I only asked once for help. I saw some great wooden lawn furniture at the second hand shop for a mere pittance. Too good to pass up. Deciding I needed my own van since I had the three boys and interested in doing future renos ...well again the start of all my troubles. You see you can go into any Hardware store and actually buy the stuff and lug it home with a van. Last year I saw the community center down the street from my house was having an outdoor sale. Arriving 1/2 hr before the end of it. A fellow from a carpet suppy store was selling commercial carpeting - 20 dollars each for brand new 12 by12 carpet! I dug in the truck for just the right one and twice found some that was a tad smaller. "You can have", it the fellow and his wife told me. Anyhow I ended up going home with 5 brand new carpets for 60 dollars. Lucky that I had arrived at the end of the day as originally it was selling for 50 dollars each. What a deal!! Besides I can probably use them in the bedrooms. (coughs and admits to them stored in the garage for over a year) The laminate flooring sat in my front entry way for over a year - left over from last years project and deciding I might need it for a smaller room, I hung on to it. Halfway through the computer room I ran out...egads meant buying more...another trip to Home Depot. While there I would see baseboard molding was on sale!!! ohhhh I have my van I can actually buy it and take it home. What a deal!! Stopping at a friends home one day they had recently finished their new fishpond and had a pile of rocks they had left over. "You want them?", they asked. Sure...I have my van!! Took four guys to load the rocks in the van ...and little ole me to lift them out. I can't tell you how many trips it took to UNLOAD them into a wheelbarrow and wheel it out to my backyard. But it was a deal!! Free! Same thing happened the other day when I bought some new bookshelves and just happened to notice a second hand shop across the street. I was just going in for a min when I spotted the most amazing bookshelf..far better than the new ones I just purchased for ..you guessed it ...a deal! The store people exclaimed the book shelf was actually new but the home owner decided they didn't want it and it was less trouble to just donate it to the store..since they didn't have a van. LOL "You need to have a large vehicle,I'm afraid", the fellow told me as we don't do deliverys. "I have a van!!!" Took three of us to carry the thing and load it in the van, along with my previous purchased inexpensive bookshelves and 2 sets of blinds. I laid out a blanket and hauled the thing in the house. Had planned on having it in the computer room but no way could I lift it up the stairs and besides it matches perfectly in the front entry way! So there's my long ramble and confession of being a hoarder, packrat and bargin shopper ...you just never know when you're going to need it! Oh last thing I should mention...I am actually having someone come over next week to help me clean out my garage!! He doesn't have a van but a 1/2 ton truck. Whew good thing I don't have one of those! Yup Lisa...it's addicting. |
He He He now don't even mention garages, that is last on my list, we have loft strorage in there and I have not looked up there in 15 years. Gawd knows what is up there LOL but will be fun to find out on my many to do jobs. HA HA
Think the worse part when you start is what to keep and what to get rid off, have had some interesting discussions/disputes with the other half Hard to break the hoarding habit just in case you might need it one day |

Could you come by me if you still feel the urge to paint??? |
Stacy wrote: barney1 wrote: I've run out of rooms to paint! But I still wanted to paint some more. Could you come by me if you still feel the urge to paint??? I'd love to, but as my husband is quick to point out (but not help!) I'm not a very good painter |
hahahaaha....its the same for me....I am NOT ALLOWED to touch a paint brush as I get more on me, the floor and the dog than the walls Hence, we have white walls....Ive been dying to get my favorite color on the walls...but, I really AM a bad painter (even though I try really hard)...even my mom wont let me touch a paint brush.....gee wiz! |
You should see my fence, white paint where the grey belongs...hubby said I did it on purpose, but I didn't really. I just can't stay in the lines. |
