Oh, yeahhhhh. James Heriot books were the best. Made me laugh and made me cry.
I still have a couple kicking around the house. I bought some for my kids, but they never got into them like me. |
I loved the James Harriot books! I read every book about vets I could find and his were the best.
Did anybody here read Is There a Vet In The Zoo? I can't remember now who wrote it. It was really good too. |
I'm a little late catching on to him, just started reading his books this year!! But I'm addicted now. Read three of them so far. Just read the one devoted to dog stories. Cried and laughed through it. |
I will always remember a story about an old woman whose eyesight was failing, with a budgie. She called the vet to trim the bird's beak. James took the bird to his office and it died of a heart attack. So he went and bought her a new one and just brought the new bird to her as if nothing happened.
A few days later she let him know that the long beak must have been really bothering the bird because ever since the trim he has been chirping happily away, when he had always been a quiet bird! And I learned a lot about calving, too! Yuckk!! |

An interesting site for james Herriot fans.It include photos of his house and practice. Thirsk is not far from where i live and i was lucky enough to meet the man in person a few times on outings to the country. |
It's been a while since I saw any episodes of All Creatures Great and Small but I can't remember there ever being a Bobtail in the show! Can anyone point to a Bobtail in the series. The most frequent dog seen, other than the Skeldale "house dogs", was of course Trikie Woo, Mrs Pumphry's Pekingese. I remember Clancy the "lively" Irish Wolfhound and a host of farm dogs but no Bobtails. That's wrong, just plain wrong!! |
I've never seen the show, but bobs are rarely mentioned in his books. Mainly he mentions the farm's "sheep dog" usually meaning a Border Collie. Still, there is one excellent story of him popping a dislocated limb back into joint - and the patiet was an OES! I love that story!
I recently re-bought one of his books because my old copy has taken so much abuse over the years. The new copy has a great cover picture - two OES on a hillside watching some sheep. |
