A kissing problem

Hi,

This isn't really an OES problem. More of a Sophie one. She doesn't give kisses at all. Whomever had her before must have taught her that licking people is bad or something because she doesn't do it at all. Instead she gnaws your nose alittle. I was just wondering if any of you have had this problem and if so did you teach your dog to kiss? We were trying peanut butter on my face to get her to lick it off and teach her "kiss" as a command or something, but no real luck.

Thanks,

Raechel

I've had several dogs who couldn't kiss at all, no matter what we tried. I know in Paige's case it was below her dignity. OTOH, we've had ones who wouldn't quit kissing......I don't know which is worse!

think carefully before you instill this in your dog

Some dogs are naturally more kissy than others. She may have been taught not to lick, which isn't an all bad thing. A lot of people prefer not to be licked, especially people who pay a lot of attention to what dogs sometimes lick, and eat, and chew.

It doesn't mean she doesn't love you. She just may be more reserved. If she likes to be petted, and actively seeks out physical contact with you, I think that's fine. She may decide to lick now and then, but if not, it doesn't lessen the bond she feels toward you.
Sophie's naturally a more independent dog who likes her space. It seems to be a natural Anatolian trait. I know we have had to teach a few other things like getting on the bed and couch. And she's afraid of metal folding chairs. Since we don't know anything about her history other than she was a stray that was already spayed its hard to say:)

Thank you:)

My Bernese is 4 years old and he has never once given kisses....nothing has worked.. peanut butter, cheese wiz.. nothing!!!!

Murphy on the other hand.. would lick and kiss you till your skin fell off.

You are teaching your dog to lick your face and to get ON the bed and the couch? Wow. Next, be sure to teach her to jump up to greet guests, surf the counters for unexpected treats, and beg for scraps of your dinner.

Or maybe it would be easier if we traded dogs. 8O

Just kidding but it is really interesting to see how different people want different things. My Maggie loves to lick. Licks all the time. I am trying to teach her some limits. She is not allowed on the couch and she can only spend a few minutes on the bed with my invitation.

Anyway, good luck with Sophie. She's a lucky dog!
Be careful what you wish for.

Dixie will give kisses, very gentle kisses...BUT....if your face is not close enough she will jump up to reach it.

My visiting sister was sitting with her on the swing this weekend and was crooning to her for kisses. Dixie jumped on her lap with her mouth open to comply and one of her teeth scraped my sister's nose and it bled!

my OES, Violet only kisses my daughter who is an adult and my husband, she does not kiss me. My Aussie Shephard, China, however does kiss me. So you just never know. I give dogs a lot of attention and they both seem very happy.
Raechel,

With Sophie being a livestock guardian, that explains a lot. They are not known for kissy behavior. I mentioned Paige, she was a Great Pyr. My other Pyrs are also non-kissers. Of the sheepdogs, MO is a kisser, Harry would take your skin off, but Jack gives just one or two little tongue tips and that's it.

Personally, I'd rather have a dog that snuggles.

My Drez is a BIG kisser, too. But she is not allowed on the couch. She used to be able to get up on the bed but that's stopped since her hips have gotten so bad too. She would only get on the bed temporarily, though, cause there wasn't enough room for the 2 of us AND a big dog.
Pirate is a good kisser. Not too much, not too little, just right. Now missy Keira is another story. She is the makeout Queen! She loves her kisses!!! When I get home from work, she won't leave me alone until I let her kiss me a millions times!

I know I"ve mentioned this before, but she is the most affectionate dog EVER!
Too cute! Annie uses kisses very sparingly and typically only when you taste or smell like something yummy. Steve doesn't like getting kisses as dog saliva has caused him to have a skin reaction before. I on the other hand...LOVE KISSES! Foz is one big KISSY BOY! It typically comes with an open mouth and stinky breath which can be a bit much for some! My Mom and I love it, Steve tries to steer clear but doesn't always succeed :D
All the kissy face sounds wonderful:) My last two dogs Ribzy and Cream Puff ("parents dogs") were big on kissing but they were labs. Sophie gets on the bed but as soon as she isn't getting petted she gets on the rug by the bed. The couch however is all hers. My husband and I have always been floor people even before she came. She's definetly her own unique self and if kissing isn't in her repetoir thats ok:)

Raechel, all dogs arent kissers....I grew up with a golden that didnt kiss (believe it or not) however, Panda will lick/kiss anything and everyone....if you dont pay attention to her, she kisses you more....I did a poll whether people thought licking was a sign of affection, because I do believe it.....
Yeh dog kissing is great, its when they start sticking their tongue in your ear, nose and yes your mouth

Wow! I have to agree with Valerie. Lucky dog, but........... "remember later", IF the end result isn't quite what you had in mind.................
don't blame the dog. 8O  mouthypf
My Bella is an unrelenting kisser. She is the most openly affectionate dog I have ever owned and I really like her affection. Winston loves to be petted and will occassioanlly lap your hand, he is much more reserved. But He LOVES his butt scratched.
I heard about someone teaching a dog to "kiss" using peanut butter once.

They don't always call that kissing though...
Isn't there something about using "kissing" as a way of demonstrating pack order? I read somewhere that the subordinate dogs will lick the alpha's nose/face as a sort of respect thing. Perhaps the non-kissers think they ought to be on the receiving end of the kisses instead...

i do think it is also a sign of affection too though, and walter does it ALL the time! he'll even stick in a lick or two when i walk by. it's funny to see his body trying to catch up with his tongue...LOL
I have 3 sheepies. One will not lick, one will lick you until you a mass of slobber if you let him, and one intersperes licks with biting your nose or ears or chin.

I wish you luck with the training and hope the result is what you were looking for.
