It will prevent some raveling, not all. The more the item is washed of course the more raveling you will have. |
You can use a product to prevent ravelling..kinda binds the edges together...however I don't know how it holds up with washing. |
As a sewer and horse person, maybe I can help. What's the mattress pad made out of? If it's quilted with a top, middle and bottom layer, you will need to sew it. If it's a single material that is like a synthetic fleece, it will be fine.
I made one for my daughter' horse from polar fleece with a layer of quilt batting in the middle. I stitched a straight stitch around the entire edge, and 2 rows down the center to go on either side of his spine to keep the batting from shifting. It worked great, and it is real soft. We use Australian saddles, so I added fabric straps to attach it to the front and for the girth to go though. The polar fleece is nice, because it doesn't ravel or fray. The stitching I did around the edge was about 1/2 inch from the edge. I also have recycled old mattress pads - I've made crate pads for the dogs with them! |
