puppy advice..

Hi everyone,

Just wondering (and I know you must of been asked a million times) if you have any tried and true ways to minimize barking...I know she is only 4 months but she's getting braver each day.

Dory barks quite a bit....even at us sometimes...and we want to try to avoid this as it could cause trouble with the neighbours.

Also, I have somewhat of a problem of her jumping up! ..Its ok now, but when she gets bigger Im alittle afraid..I've been putting my hand out lately and saying down! ...Will that do it?

Please help if you have any suggestions.

Thanks~

Have you tried taking her to puppy class- to assist with the jumping, etc. Possibly she is "speaking" to you because she wants something, or attention. There are several good books out there to read as well.

Good luck
I have heard that training a dog to "speak" (bark) on command facilitates teaching a dog to be quiet on command.

Reward your puppy for being quiet by saying "good quiet" and possibly give a treat too for calm, quiet behaviour.

I have also heard that teaching a dog to "up" (jump up) on command can also be the first step to teaching a dog to "off" (get down) on command.

We use the "off" command for "get off the furniture" and will use it for "get off us" if he does ever jump up on us. The "down" command will be used for lie down.

Make sure that however you decide to deal with the behaviour that everyone in the household is consistent too. Make sure the behaviour is corrected every time and with the same command/reaction.

Good luck,
I have heard the best way to get them to stop barking is to teach them to bark, too. Easier said than done, of course!!!
Teaching speak is actually a good way to stop barking, as much as it seems it wouldn't be.

I'm also using a spray bottle with my two puppies. They bark at each other in play more than humans usually can tolerate. A quick, strong squirt works wonders because it provides enough of a distraction that they stop the barking. It doesn't hurt, is only a little messy and is pretty effective.

Speak is the next command I am planning to teach.
Chauncey went through a "stage" from about 2-6 months of age. He would start barking around 8pm and bark for an hour or so. Mostly he'd look out the window and bark at the rabbits, car lights or light from the TV flashing on the windows, any noise, etc...etc...etc. Needless to say it would get on your last nerve. What I found that worked best was to reassure him by saying oh, it's only "whatever", and then distracting him. He is still the nosiest neighbor in the neighborhood, he doesn't miss a thing. He just isn't barking incestantly. I do spend each morning cleaning doggy snot off the windows though.
Jen,

Dory's markings look just like my Barkley's! What a darling she is! Post more pictures.... we love pictures! :D

Any luck with getting her to stop barking?
Yes they bark usually for attention or to try and tell you something, more often than not Ollie barks for attention and play - but when "no plays" is not enough and the barking continues, I turn my back and fold my arms, he stops immediately, lays down, then I praise him for being good, but very calmy and gently - i read this in a dog training book - it might work for you ?? good luck !!
Thanks guys for all your responses!! I will defo. try some of them. She starts puppy school tonight so I also hoping they'll offer some suggestions!

Steph...You're right your puppy does look like Dory! ...I will add some more pictures-I'm just trying to figure out how! haha
