Hi and welcome!
For unwanted barking when you come home, I would recommend reading Jan Fennel's the Dog Listener. She recommends ignoring the dog until it settles down and then wait another 5 minutes before greeting them. I do that with mine and it works great. That means I walk past them and do not look at them when I come home. I wait until they are quiet and calm. Eventually, the time frame before they get themselves settled down gets shorter and shorter. For clippers, you do have to be very careful around areas with loose skin (arm pits, etc.) but I found them pretty easy to use. I love my Oster Turbo 2speed A5 but if you browse through the grooming section, you will see a variety of clippers discussed. Re growling, I'll leave that to someone with more experience to answer. Post some pictures when you have a chance. We love pictures! |
Welcome to the forum!
I agree, reading the book mentioned should give you some tremendous help./ideas. Good luck! |

Welcome! My OES is jealous too, and from reading this forum it seems like a common OES characteristic. They're very clingly and get very attached to someone in the household. However, there is a difference between wanting attention (whenever my husband and I hug Bailey tries to get between us or jump up on us to "share the love") and being aggressive (growling, biting). Are you afraid that Pebbles might bite your daughter? Also, is Pebbles spayed? pebbles wrote: the other problem i have is shes geting very matty so i have been cutting her and leaving about a inch and then using a de matting comb which is working. i cant seem to do her legs and ears and need to get some clippers. im frightended to use them , will they cut her at all ? what are a good set to get as there seems so many clippers out there
If Pebbles is matted I would recommend that you bring her into the groomer for a 1 inch cut so that you start with an even coat. It will be much easier for you to maintain her after that. We keep our OES fairly short all the time because we don't have the time to groom a full coat. (I'd rather walk the dog than groom him, so at least he'll never be fat ) We have Oster clippers too. Don't waste your money on cheap clippers - we bought an inexpensive pair the first time and it was a nightmare. A good pair of clippers is expensive but it makes the job much easier. The Dog Listener is a great book, you should definitely read it! Good luck! |
Welcome to the forum
Have you had her since she was a puppy? In regards to grooming, sometimes it is beter to just shave them right down if there are mats that you can't get out, matted coat can cause pain, skin infections and sores etc.... |
Welcome! I'm excited to get to know her!! |
Welcome. I can tell you love your dog very much, but it sounds like you could use some help with some behavior before it gets out of hand. OES's are very affectionate and like to be with their people, sometimes one certain special person. That's fine, but it isn't fine if the dog feels that it owns its person. That means the dog is in charge of the person, and that's not a good situation for anyone. It could become a bad situation and result in a bite. I know you would not like that at all.
The Dog Whisperer: A Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to Dog Training, by Paul Owens, Norma Eckroate is a great book. You might also consider working with a trainer on the jealousy/agression issue, because guarding you, growling when your daughter comes near is an agression issue. |
Hi everyone
thank you for your replys its helped me alot i had a groomer round yesterday who clipped her and showed me how to use the clippers she advised that keep her out of water i have ordered the oyster turbo clippers so i will keep her trimmed up from now on i think she got matty under her belly from getting wet playing in the garden im just so glad she is all clean now she looks so pretty yes we have had her since a puppy , it just been this last few months that shes started this growling with my daughter but she only does it when im here if im out shes fine with her she even sleeps on her bed ( shes got a brain like a sive lol ) i will try and post some pics of her soon she is a good dog and i love her so much shes so loving speak soon and thanks again for all the advice |
On my sheepie Violet, I like to keep her hair grown out, because, I always felt that one of the reasons I wanted a OES is because I love the way they look with their beautiful hair. So what I do is have my groomer shave Violet's belly. When you look at her you can't tell that that hair is gone and I don't have to worry about that white hair matting.
I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your adorable sheepie. Helen (Violet, China and Pearl's Mom) |
