Is she rubbing herself in her own poop or another animal's? |
Hi,
While I'm not sure how to stop this behavior - two things came to mind when I read your post. She may be doing what some dogs do on instinct..going back to their wild ancestors when dogs/wolves often disquised their scent by rubbing in another animals feces. The other and I'm not sure if I have this correctly or not..something in my brain remembers that is a dog is missing some sort of vitamin (now don't take my word for it) that they may eat their own feces. It would be worth checking up on and a book I highly recommend and will purchase another copy as mine has gone missing is: Why Dogs Bark by Desmond Morris. He explains all types of dog behavior and is a most enjoyable read. |
Yes, it is true that dogs who are missing something in their diet will eat their own or another dog's poo. |
Hope this helps.

Thank you all very much for answering me. I have since ordered the books and am waiting anxiously. She seems to eat all feces. Sometimes I believe she does it to get attention. like a kid either good or bad.
Thanks montanalin |

arrghhh! pewwww!
I gave Maggy a bath last night, clipped her feet, between the toes, did nails, etc. This morning she went out and rolled in what I call " dog $h!t ". YUCK! She went right back to the bath. Now I'm going to have to monitor her really closly to make sure she doesn't do it again! It could get to be a vicious cycle! Just thought you might like to know you're not alone, Montanalin! Just wish it could be something else we had in common right now! |
We experienced poop eating with Chelsea as a young pup. From the day we took her home this past January as an 8 week old we had an issue. We would let her run in the backyard and the minute we took our eyes off of her she would have poop in her mouth. I think it eventually became an attention seeking thing with her. I knew we absolutely HAD to do something when I let her in one night and she trotted up, gave me what looked like a wink, and spit a log of poop on our kitchen floor. Ever since that night we take her out on leash. If she is out in the yard with us we clean up right away. It's been about 4 months and we have not had a problem. Hope this helps. |
