Actually in puppies, it is only play, and as they get a bit older it is a sign of vying for dominance. I'd tell him no now while he is still small. It's nothing to do with sex until they are much older. |
Finnegan is ADORABLE! Your pictures are great. Love your avatar. |
Oh heavens no. It's perfectly normal. My puppy Pippin and some of the other puppies his age (who shall remian nameless to protect their identity) were full blown humping their mommies at 10 weeks. Like Stacey said, it is perfectly normal, if annoying play behavior. You just have to be firm, push them down with a firm no, and DO NOT ENGAGE IN PLAY BEHAVIOR until they stop doing that. Now at almost 7 months (Wow, already???) Pippin doesn't hump anymore, although he does still jump up every once in a while. We're working on that |
Willoughby who is 14 months didn't do any humping until he was about 8 months old and then he attacked his bed exclusivley. Last evening I gave him a new stuffed toy dog whom we decided to calll Reginald. Well, Willoughby went nuts: tossing poor Reginald in the air, humping his bed and having a wonderful time until he fell over and went to sleep. He's never done that before with other toys. |
Clyde will be 2 next month (can you believe it?) and has been an air humper since about 4 or 5 months old. It's like something comes over him and once it starts, it can't be stopped. It just has to run its course. Once of these days, I'll get a video of it. It's always quite unexpected. |
My sister has a 14 wk old golden retriever. He gets this one stuffed bear and gets over the top and starts humping. So apparently if can happen pretty young but I don't think it becomes sexual until they are older. |
