I need some more books! Is anyone a fantasy or sci fi fiction reader? I'm looking for a few new authors to add to my must read list. My favorite authors include: Terry Brooks, David Eddings, Anne McCaffrey, Robyn McKinley, George R.R. Martin and Patricia McKillip. Iv'e read pretty much everything I can get my hands on by those authors. Anyone have any suggestions for me for new people to try? |

Jean Auel... definitely not sci fi, but it is usually lumped into fantasy... even though it's more prehistoric fiction.
Douglas Adams of course... um... hmmm.. (sci fi is not my thing) Isaac Asimov? |
I love Douglas Adams! Hitchhikers was classic. Did he write anything besides the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series? |
He did...

I normally don't read anything with dragons or spaceships on the cover (yes, I do judge. ). But, not so much sci-fi, but more sciency fiction--John Darnton. I bought his first book Neandrathal from the bargain bin and quite enjoyed it. He has two more: The Experiment and Mindcatcher.
Not sure if it's the kind of thing that you'd be interested in but might be worth looking into. |
You've GOT to read Eragon and Eldest by Paolini if you haven't. I think they are a terrific dou - the trio is coming out in the next year I believe. The author was only 16 when he wrote the first book. I especially love it because the author is from this itsy bitsy town in MT a few hours from where I used to live. It is one of the most beautiful valleys I've seen.
Here's the website. http://www.alagaesia.com/index.php They are great books and a fairly fast read so you'll enjoy them! |
Yep, read the Eragon books too, they were good, but the first few chapters of Eragon needed some polish. For a first novel, it was still quite impressive.
Jill, I'll check out the Darnton books. I'm up for pretty much anything that is well written. |

Yes! I love science fiction and fantasy. Marion Zimmer Bradley, The Darkover Novels. This series is great and will keep you busy for a while. Her other novels are also good. Patricia Kennealy-Morrison, The Keltiad series. Combines two of my favorite things, Arthurian legend and sci-fi. I love her books, and her bio cracks me up - she claims to have married Jim Morrison in some "private" ceremony which was neither legally sanctioned or publicly acknowledged and is still fighting with his estate. Piers Anthony, Incarnations of Immortality series. Fantasy books, each one written from the perspective of a different "immortal": War, Death, Time, Evil, etc. If you're into really light fantasy/humor, he also wrote another series called Xanth which was based on puns. And I love the master - Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert. The original Dune books are a tough read but are classics. And I love all the Asimov books but particulalry the Robot series. |
Frank Herbert was a master. Arguably one of the best futuristic writers out there, I love how complete his vision of the Dune reality was... Assimov gets a bit dry for me for some reason, but my dad loves him!
Pier's Anthony's Xanth novels are hilarious... My favorite is the one about the Night mare. I'm gonna checkout the incarnations series... Thanks for alll the tips guys, keep them coming! |
I read such heavy stuff for work (and until recently for school), so I like the light reads when I'm reading for fun.
Fantasy.... I would suggest the Harry Potter books. They're light, easy reads but they're not just for kids. In fact, I think I should read them again soon... Right now I'm reading Anne of Green Gables.... yeah, I'm big on light reading. |

I was waiting for my open house in the evening, dropped by the library, saw it and read it quickly. After spending a lot of my childhood around the Seattle area I love the references to it! |

Love the HP books! I read the first 3 as soon as they came out. The the 4th took a bit for me to find the time to read it. Then, 2 years later, I got around to reading the Order of the Phoenix. And enjoyed it so much I will probably start the Half-Blood Prince tonite! |

I think they're a good, fun, read. I love the way she tells a story. |
I am not a sci-fi person, but I have the Harry Potter books. Everyone alse here has read them, so I'm glad I splurged on the hard covers. My son rereads them every time he's bored and between books. I think he's read them all 8 times now! |
