I was just reading about the dog in Illinois you are working on rescueing. I was just wondering how common adopting out of state like that is. I have emailed both Idaho contacts and the Washington one, as well as a shelter that had another Anatolian mix I thought might get along with Sophie. I haven't gotten a reply from any of them and a mailerdaemon reply that the Stacy Rosecrans's email isn't valid. There seem to be so many sheepies on petfinder, etc. that need help. I can see the problem with not being able to go meet the dog though. I've not tried calling anyone because I really don't like talking on the phone to strangers. Yesterday Gary and I met a cute border collie at the dog park who escaped from the shelter and he and Sophie played. I am one of those people who believe that things happen for a reason, so maybe he escaped so we would meet him:) I really had my heart set on a sheepie, but maybe that's not what's suppose to happen at this moment. Time will tell. Sorry for the long rant! Raechel |

As much as you hate to do it, you really ought to call. When I wanted Bear, I e-mailed, did the application and followed up with e-mail and phone calls more than once. I didn't care of they were getting sick of me-- I wanted him! I think a lot of the places aren't as e-mail savvy as a lot of people are (even though they give it as a contact) so if one methoid fails, try the other. I think it also shows a good bit of committment on your part when you show that you'll work hard to get the dog. It isn't always easy and it can be depressing when you aren't getting the replies that you're hoping for.
Good luck! |
My husband is going to call the ones that are close when he wakes up
thanks:) Raechel |
Try sga745@ailmail.net (Sally Gay)
and shaggydogsrescue@yahoo.com to reach Staci Rosencrans Both cover Idaho. We are working on updating the rescue contact list and I have been having trouble emailing Staci as well. This email address did not bounce last night. Marie Harrington Dixie Old English Sheepdog Rescue, Inc. www.dixieoesrescue.org |
Hey,
My husband talked to Sally on the phone. She said that she's not had any rescue sheepies in the last two years. She also said she works with the lady that does the rest of Idaho and she hasn't had any either. There's a lady in Logan Utah that was giving up her sheepie, but that's 15 hours away. Sally also said if we did adopt out of state that the nearest airport willing to fly in a big dog is Portland. So, at a time when its hard to get away that wouldn't work. Gary and I are going to go walk Cash, the border collie on Saturday and see if he's as good of a dog as he seemed when we met him the other day. Everything happens for a reason and I am sure I will be guided to the dog I am suppose to have:) Raechel |
Please don't give up on a sheepie just because you can't find one within your state. Many dogs have been transported great distances by volunteers from OES and all-breed Rescues.
If Marianne can get an OES from China to Vancouver getting one to Idaho should be a breeze. Good luck! |
Hi,
I remember the first time I logged on here aprox 3 years ago offering to take a rescue sheepie. After what I thought was a long wait and no sheepies in any rescue up here I ended up purchasing Merlin as a puppy. Meant renting a car and driving down to the US to get him. Sigh if only I knew then what I know now...there's a lot of rescues around. Sometimes just contacting the right person and others whom may be willing to help with transport may be what makes it happen. 3 wks after Shaggy passed I heard about Panda from Hong Kong through this forum and thus he ended up with me too. I also had Blue so ended up with three. There's also been quite a few stories of amazing rescues in the three years I've been in this forum by members. It can happen! Now that members on here know me well it may be easier if I was trying to get another rescue some day. However, some rescues need to have a home check done by someone in their organization FIRST. You can't blame them for their restrictions sometimes as it means they care about where the furball goes. In my case I would have had to rely on someone actually adopting the dog for me, trusting me that I would send $ and arranging for either a flight or connecting with those that do dog/pony express for rescues. Long as I have one sheepie in the household I'm still open to adopting a dog of any breed in the future. I love them all. Perhaps the dog you are looking at is meant to find it's forever home with you. Good Luck Marianne |
That's how I feel about it. I think Cash is suppose to come home with us. I mean how often does a god escape from an animal shelter and hang around to wait to come meet you? I know if I was kept in a kennel and got out I wouldn't stay around hehe. I have had a life completly ruled by random happenings and amazing luck that I trust fate more than anything. So hopefully he and Sophie will get along and we can add a member:)
I know in the future after I am done with college (another at least 6 yrs) and my husband and I can settle into one place and have our own home without having to worry about keeping neighbors happy I will be able to have the dog of my dreams:) Thanks all for the support:) Raechel |

I would think gods don't escape from animal shelters too often... |
That's' what I get for letting my fingers do the talking:) |
If your local rescue is willing to sponsor you with another out of state rescue, that might work. That means Sally or Montana rescue would do the home check and support the rescue. Of course the money goes to the out of state. Not all out of states are willing to part with their dogs, they want to stay in touch. Each group is different. I encouraged people here to go out of state because we would get so few dogs. I would do the leg work here.
Another thought is to contact a different breed rescue and see if they could help. For example, I've heard Utah has sheepdogs from time to time. Maybe someone there could snag a dog for you. Living in an area where sheepdog are far and few between does make it hard to find one. Don't give up. You may end up with another dog first and then suddenly one becomes available. |
I am in Fort Wayne Indiana and all 3 of the OESDs I have adopted came from Barrington Hills, north of Chicago. The last one came from Iowa to Barrington Hills and I drove up to get him. I will do it again when the time comes. |
Hi wrecktech. We're trying to build a network of rescue volunteers in Indiana now. Please PM me if you'd like to help. Unfortunately, there ARE homeless OES here, too.
Most Indiana adoptions have been handled through Chicagoland OES Club Rescue and NEOESR. Until we get our own Rescue we're working with them as well as the Michigan OES Rescue.... and anywhere else we can. (Sorry, Sophie's Mom, didn't mean to hijack your thread.) |
No problem:) I wish we were closer. We just moved to Idaho last year from Michigan and I am originally from Valporaiso, IN.
