Hip problems?

My husband and I have been having a debate about Scruffy. She often sits like this:

He thinks it is bad for her hips and could lead to problems and that we should correct her from sitting like that. To me, it just looks like she is happy and sitting like a puppy (she's 1 1/2 years old). Anyone know what the signs are for hip problems, or things you can do to avoid them?
Thanks,
Scruffy's Mom

Panda lays like that too...but usually its because she is waiting for something...a walk, dinner, cookie..etc....she is able to pounce from this position....does scruffy seem to be in pain when laying in any other position?
No, She lays like this about half the time, mostly when she is playing with a toy or something, the other half she lays on one or the other hips.
sounds pretty normal to me...
Looks pretty normal to me too.
My parents' sheepdog sits like that, too. And she is 9 and has no trouble with it. I don't know if that means it is or isn't bad for them, though, but she's always done it and is fine. (and it think it's cute!)
How does he think she should sit? More on her side?
I see a frog pose!
My 14 year old American Eskimo sits like that and doesn't seem to have any problems with his hips. It just seems to be his preferrred way of sitting.

And yes Ron...we do call it his "frog" pose. :)

I'm glad to hear that no one is too worried about it. I think she looks really cute when she sits like that and would hate to train her to sit a certain way when she obviously likes the way she does it just fine. She does look like a little frog... ok a giant hairy frog. :)
She's beautiful, love her coat :)
Ollie and Bart both layed like that almost all the time - and they never had any hip problems. Scruffy is very cute!
Our dog Royce used to only know how to sit like that.. and then trainer taught him the "settle" position where he sits on one side of his hips.
she said it puts less pressure on the hips and he can stay in that position for longer without much strain..

He automatically goes into the position when he knows he has to sit for long... "sit & stay".. for example..

I don't see any harm in teaching her to sit on her side anyways.. She can then choose to sit which ever is comfortable for her!
Boy is she cute!

I had a girl with hip displasia and I don't remember her ever sitting like that. Hope that makes you feel better.

If you ever discover your dog has hip displatia, exercise but not over exertion is very important because strong leg muscles really help. Also Glucosamine with Chondroitin helps as well. I really hope Scruffy never has any problems. Someone told me if a dog lays on it's stomach and puts it's legs straight back that they definitely don't have any hip problems. I don't know if it's true or not.
