My dog has been to the vets regarding a possible grass seed in his toe, Its red and theirs a lump on the top of his foot which he is continually licking, its calmed down since ive been bathing it in hot water and salt. It started as a pussey spot in his pad, which i have tried to keep clean but has progressed to the other top of his foot. Is there anything else any one could suggest to help. If its not out in week he has to have it operated on. Thanks |

Sounds like you're doing the right things. I believe the hot salt water is supposed to draw it to the surface. I do hope surgery won't be necessary.
Sorry your boy is not feeling well. |
It sounds like a correct treatment. I hope it works it's way out and you can avoid surgery. |
Thanks very much for all your support.
I'll keep you posted on his progress, x |
I'm sorry to hear that. We had a similar situation with a foxtail in the paw. At that time we didn't know if anything was indeed in there but it looked how you describe. So I used a warm wash cloth each night for about three nights and gently laid it on there a few different times until the wash cloth wasn't warm any more. Then I would use my finger and gently touch around the lump and low and behold a foxtail end appeared one night so I just Gently touched at the top of the lump above it and it came right out. I think probably what you are doing by soaking it with warm salt water sounds even smarter. I had trimmed the fur around the paw too.
Good luck. And welcome to the forum. |
Hello,
Thank you for your advice, I really appreciate it, I will definately try the hot cloth every night on his foot, its really nice to be able to discuss things with other Sheepie lovers. Ive just got all his hair cut really short escpecially around the his toes so i can check for nasties easier. Ill keep you posted but it definately looks better, its not so red and sore looking and the lump looks like its gone down abit, but now hes got like a pussy looking bit on the lump which I asume is the grass seed working its way out??? But ill keep my fingers crossed that its out by his next vet visit. xx Thanks again Fran & Alfie |
I wonder if adding a little Epsoms salt to the hot water would help? I know there are drawing salts that help dislodge splinter, wonder if this would help?
I think it's great someone got the foxtail out by soaking! I've always had to have the vet to it......and sometimes there hasn't been anything inside the lump but we still had to pay for her services |
