Just got a puppy!!!!!

Hi all,

I'm new to this site although i've been reading it while i was researching the breed to see it it would be suitable for my family, and then in the dreaded wait until I wcould collect my puppy Piper, I thought I was going to burst I was so excited about getting her!!

Piper is 9 weeks weeks old and i've had her for nearly 2 weeks, she's completely adorable and settling in well.

Just wanted to thank everyone on this excellent site as i've found some very insightful advice on the dreaded nipping (as soon as piper learns my son's feet are not chew toys i'll be estactic!) and toilet training, which touch wood she seems to be getting better at. Although i wish I could say the same about my two year old, who since Piper's arrival has took a billion steps back in once excellent potty training record!

The only real issue is our 9 year old border collies jealousy, she actually made herself sick yesterday from eating her dinner soooooooo quickly just so that piper doesn't get any, which is completely crazy as she's kept out the way for tammy to enjoy her dinner in peace. Then again she's always been ditzy and crazy which is exactly why I love her. If tammy was a human she'd be just like Pheobe from friends!!

Anyway, my actual question is:- Piper constantly gets her poo stuck to the hair around her bum, i've had to wash it almost every day so far. I asked my vet about it when she had her first jabs and he simply said that its because she doesn't have a tail?! Do you have any advice/suggestions on how I can deal with this problem?

Thanks for any help. Sorry for the long post, I just couldn't stop typing!!!

Welcome to the forum and Congrats on your new addition.

Our Chipper is 5 months and I keep the area around his "bottom" shaved down some. Does the pup have loose stools? Typically Chipper doesn't have any on his rear unless it is loose, which thank goodness, we haven't experienced in several weeks.

Good luck! Post some pics !!
Welcome to the forum.

One thing that helps is clipping or shaving the hair around their "bum" - because the looser the stool (especially puppy stools) the more it sticks to the hair. Less hair in that area means less poo sticking.

Good luck with Piper!

Hee i really like that analogy.
I love phoebe's personality in a dog!!!!

Shouldn't stool be hard, chuncky, and not get on the hair?
Or is puppy stool softer? I forgot!!!!
Welcome to the forum! Glad you found us!
Welcome to the forum! Congrats on your pup :)

As far as your other dog, it may just take some time for them to adjust to each other. I wouldn't interfere too much and let them establish their relationship, supervised of course, unless you feel either will actually get hurt.
As far as poop sticking to the bum, that shouldn't happen unless the stool is loose. Did you change foods or use the food the breeder was using? If you did change foods, it could be upsetting the pups digestive system, or it may not be a good enough quality food. (that may be the case even if you didn't change foods)
It also could be a change in water if the pup was raised in a different town.
It has nothing to do with the pup not having a tail.
Welcome Piper! I hope everything clears up soon!
Welcome Piper!
We keep Noodle clipped short in the rear and his wet stools cleared up a few weeks after we got him.

BTW-My DH is from London and his parents vacation in Torquay frequently :D

Welcome Piper and greatings from Australia :D Congratulations on your new sheepie baby
Thank you all for your replies. I guess it could be a number of things and will hopefully calm down soon, not only for the sake of my water bill but for piper who must have a terribly upset stomach.

Willowsprite, I never even considered the change in water! It was a 5 hour drive to Clitheroe where I picked piper up and I know from visiting up country when I was younger that the water is completely different.

As for the food she was eating at the breeders, well thats probably the main problem. It makes me soooooo angry but i'll try to keep it simple and not go off on a rant. Being so far away I choose piper from pictures the breeder sent to me, and then sent her a deposit. Not wanting to carry a large amount of cash all the way to clitheroe, actually I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying it any distance! I sent the remainder of money by cheque just over a week before collection. As soon as the breeder had received my money she almost completely stopped communicating with me, I couldn't get through to her on the phone so I sent numerous e-mails asking for an updated picture and what her personality was developing into, and when she finally replied it was a simple, 'Can't catch her to take a picture and she doesn't have a personality yet as she's too young' Well I was getting more and more worried thinking that she had taken my money and didn't even have any puppies!!

Anyway, back to the food! From the advice I found on this forum, I asked the breeder what food she was on and she told me that they were eating pedigree chum puppy meat and bakers complete puppy food. I did think it was weird that they were eating a mixture of makes, does that matter???

Anyway, when I went to collect her, full of nerves and excitement, arriving a little earlier than planned due to excellent traffic, I found the breeder at work and the animals left with the breeder and their teenage son. Anyway the husband was really nice nad helpful, although he didn't have a clue about anything puppyfied. So he spoke to his wife on the phone sorting out the papers, while I spent time with the mum who was absoulately adorable. She appeared to have a perfect temperment, a wonderful role model for pipers first eight weeks of life. So the husband showed me for food they were all eating, which turned out to be Asda's home brand. Why didn't she tell me that? I had to pay extra to order the Bakers food in as no-one sold it here! Plus we don't even have an Asda so I couldn't buy her any of the food that she had been on, yet if she'd told me before I could have ordered it in.

He also said that a few nights ago the puppies had got into the cubbord and eaten all the cat biscuits, which covered them for the poop already on her bum. They hadn't even bothered to clean her up. Also at the initial point of contact I was told that all the puppies would of had their first jab, which never happened.

Piper has had a full check up with the vet and i'm glad to say in good health, and if I ever get another dog I would of certaintly learned from this experience.

Sorry its so long again!x
I am glad piper is in good health and yes a change in water can have a bad effect on them. My brie came from overseas so when she arrived it was bottled water then a gradual slow change over to the local water.

If you want to change the food that the pup is on then do it gradually too. If you find a growth brand that you like in the dry food, then start with the older one the pup is on and mix a ratio of 3/4 old to 1/4 new, do this for a few days and if the poop is Ok then go onto 1/2 and 1/2 for a few days, then 3/4 of the new to 1/4 of the previous, then about 1 and half weeks later if poop is still firm then you should be on the new stuff with no problems.

Anytime you change a diet, just do it gradually. I would personally be looking at a better quality puppy growth kibble, just my opion there with what pup is on at the moment.

Look forward to seeing some pictures of your new sheepie baby and ask away anything, as there is plenty of wonderful supportive people here on this forum to answer anything you want to ask.
Yes I'd definitely get her on a good quality puppy kibble. If you search the threads in the forum you will find several about what foods people use.
You don't get to get the most expensive brand on the market, but you do get what you pay for in most cases. I'm currently feeding mine Pro Plan Puppy Chicken and Rice formula. I had them on Iams for a long time and found they did very well on that as well, and I've heard many people say that they find their dogs do well on Nutro.
I hope it all clears up quickly... and I'm guessing the vet did a stool sample check for worms, coccidia etc?
Congrats on your new puppy and welcome to the forum!
Sorry you had such bad dealings with the breeder.
I agree with what others have said about the food.
Take lots of picture of your puppy as they grow VERY quickly. :D
Welcome Piper and family! Can't wait to see pictures.
I hope Piper is doing better. Our Oliver had a VERY sensitive tummy - the least bit of new snack or food was a gamble! We learned real quick to keep the hairs trimmed around his butt. It's much easier to prevent a mess this way.
Hi Piper welcome to the forum.

My 8 month old has a delicate tummy and we put him on james wellbeloved and he is now doing fine. It's a bit more expensive than the normal brands but if you read the packet the dog needs less for each meal so the packet lasts longer. :)
My Chauncey has done well on Royal Canin which should be available to you in the UK. I used the large breed puppy food.
Thank you all for a great welcome, your all so lovely and friendly!

I trimmed Piper's hair and i'm in the process of changing her food over to James Wellbeloved so fingers crossed her tummy will settle down soon, thanks again for all your very helpful and much needed advice!

We went to the vet's earlier where Piper got her last lot of jabs and a microchip - i've seriously never seen a needle so big in my life, i thought i was going to faint! Feeling very guilty about letting them put that in her now, but i'm sure that if she ever gets parted from me it will make it all worth it.
