Ok, it's been 95+ degrees for over 5 days this year. Yes, that is warm, but let me take a second to remind you of something. IT IS SUMMER. Know that really cold season? "winter? Yeah, summer balances it out. These 5 days are very similar to the 5 days last year it was over 95 outside. There's this thing called "terrarian homeostasis" which means that cold years are followed by hot years. It also means that dry years are followed by wet ones, which means moses and his arc are not needed for those 7 days it rained 3 weeks go. Remeber last summer? it was warm then too! (I KNOW, IT IS CRAZY!) And don't even get me started on your alarmist reaction to the tornado in hawthorne, NY. That was the first tornado in NY in 4 years. before that, it took 5 years, and before that, 3. The patern continues if you read weather reports, right back until the turn of the century when we started reporting weather. Which tells me that this tornado, which killed millions of defenseless termites, was part of a weather cycle, and not the apocolypse. So, before you freak out, hop on the phone and talk too loud, claiming that the world is ending and burning up, why don't you go outside and enjoy the warm weather, before it gets cold out, and you start complaining about global cooling. |

I wrote about global warming in here once.
Didn't get much of a response. I wish you better luck. |
Anybody seen the new Al Gore movie about Global Warming??? |
LOL Ed. I totally agree. Everything runs in cycles. Even hurricanes tend to follow 36 year cycles (in the Atlantic anyway, haven't checked Pacific or anything with this) - if it was a "bad" year 36 years ago, chances are it will be a "bad" year this year also. **Not saying it was a bad year 36 years ago...I haven't even peeked at the history yet.** Examples...Hurricane Camille hit in 69 - Katrina hit almost the same area in '05 - 36 year difference. It also falls in line for the number of named storms and hurricanes. Not always, but a good many of the years do this well enough to show a definite pattern. There are a slightly larger amount of named storms today, but that is probably because we have the technology to see exactly what hurricanes are doing today that they didn't have in the 30s and 60s.
The Earth's heating and cooling patterns are cyclic too. We're just in the warmer cycle right now. A few years from now, we'll all be enjoying the cooler cycle (well, maybe not the Northerners with the snow during the winter). Oh, I just peeked at the history. In 1970, there were 10 named storms and 5 hurricanes. In 1934, there were 11 named storms and 6 hurricanes. We'll see if the trend continues in the Atlantic this year. |
As for me, I'm sitting back and enjoying the warmer weather cycle... The milder winters let me grow all those sensitive plants I wouldn't be able to during a cold winter cycle.
Ok, so the 100 degree days suck when you don't have central air, but it just makes you enjoy the milder summer days that much more!!!! |
That al gore movie is a bunch of baloney. We looked at it in my level 4 philosphy class and they were all saying that the glaciers were getting bigger!! Yes they are b/c the insides are melting which spreads to the outsides, which makes for a very thin glacier all around. But i do think america needs to be more responsible with their waste.

Uh oh Ron, maybe you better move this post to food for thought...

You guys talk about global warming in philosophy class? Wouldn't it be a better discussion in a science class? What about all the glacier areas that are now completely water? I do believe that weather is cyclical, but there is certainly enough evidence of global warming not to just dismiss it. I am glad that GW (global warming not George W. ) is such a hot topic (no pun intended ) because it's forcing people to think about about environment & what we consume on a planet level. And the fact that oil prices are so high are also pushing people into an alternative energy sources which I'm thrilled about. The earth will end ultimately adapt to GW. I certainly would love it if the winters were warmer. But you might want to have your children's children invest into Ark building companies... |
The weather is cyclic, that much is proven if they look at a deep drilled ice core, or fossils, or even just recorded history, and recent history. However, I think global warming is another of those undeniable facts. I don't think that recycling your pop cans is going to help one iota to be honest, but there is that hole in the ozone that keeps getting bigger. The oceans are warming up, but who's to say they didn't do this just as fast if not faster before? What if the ice sheets that exist now are in fact from the last bunch of ice that melted, flooded parts of the planet and then froze where they are?
I think these things were happening anyway, like they have many times before in the earth's approximately 4.5 billion year history, and like they will many more times. I just think humans are speeding it up a bit by damaging the planet, the ozone and the atmosphere... but not by that much. |
oh please.......Al Gore wrote a book about this some year's back and it was torn apart page by page.......now he has a movie.......guess for people who can't read ............ |
I am moving this to Food for Thought, because it will/could be slightly controversial, or more.
While on your way over to Food for Thought, here's something to chew on... if you have a spare hour or two. I read it all the way through today. It's 10 years old, I wonder how this top scientist feels today? http://www.stanford.edu/~moore/Boon_To_Man.html He covers much more ground that I did in my GW post from a year ago, but please take the time to read my take and my quotes from it. It's a perspective you don't hear or read too often, and might get you thinking. http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=4838 |
Thanks Ron for moving this over. Also read your previous post. It's so nice to read from others who aren't caving to the hype. Everytime I hear the term "global warming" I want to ........., WHOA, slow down, take a breath and count to ten. |
I read a novel recently (and of course I cant remember the title) about global warming and the whole basis of the book was that politicians used the global warming as a platform to create awareness to their campain and what they ''could do'' to prevent it....it also had one of the larger fundraisers trying to create global warming to make the platform plausible....it was a great book, Im going to have to try to find it .... |

Okay... just to lighten the mood and to be a bit of a smartass.... It was Noah who built the arc. Alarmists make me laugh. I don't think we have anything to worry about... it's more fun to just enjoy life! Last night we were moving boxes into our new place (a rental while our house is being built) as a storm was rolling in.... scary black clouds and whistling wind. Turns out, there were tornado sightings just 10km away. That was fun! |

Sorry, meant to say the Earth will ultimately adapt... |

It's Ark! And it really stinks that there has to be/is a political spin on the whole GW theory... Bottom line is though, let's all do our share to help the environment, weather it means to look into using alternative energy means, consuming less, etc. I know it's hard to change habits, but prices are coming down on some of these resources... so now is a great time and hopefully the world will continue to go in this direction... |

Doh!!! I should have postponed my stroke this morning!! |
VerveUp wrote: Sheepie Heaven wrote: It was Noah who built the arc. It's Ark! Oops. I wasn't sure so I just copied the spelling at the top. Too bad the forum doesn't have spellcheck! I agree that we should do our part to conserve energy and recycle, etc. wherever possible. I think that manufacturers could make a huge difference by reducing the amount of excessive packaging that products are packed in. I hear that in some countries (Netherlands? I forget), the packaging is drastically minimal compared to here. |
If for no other reason than to reduce comsumptive rate.......I agree with developing alternatives and being more efficient. I hate politics.......

That would be "Noah" and the Ark. People thought the words of a drunkard (Noah) were foolish, until the floods came. Yet we still continue to wait until it's too late to prepare for things, we just have to "see" it first to "believe" it. We may not be able to run from the heat, but in the spring we can make sure our airconditioners are working. |
Well, I'm not sure it isn't happening. The point is perhaps it's a good thing. Perhaps a bad thing. I don't know. Nobody knows. I think that anyone who insists that they do deserves to be intellectually dismissed. Unless they can convince me, but that won't be easy.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't study the issue for the possible benefit of ourselves, and most certainly the benefit of all of our posterity. Perhaps we should cool the earth. Perhaps we should warm the earth. Perhaps we should stop building (or rebuilding) cities underwater. Maybe we should build ALL of our cities underwater (Stargate Atlantis Style?). Who knows what will be in 1,000 years. Who knows what we need to do to "terraform" Mars. We can learn. That doesn't mean we shouldn't use alternative, "renewable", non-polluting energy sources. What do I recommend? Solar Electricity! |
Whether global warming is happening or not...humans need to change some of their habits.
Even if buring fossil fuels wasn't harmful to the planet....they will only last so long. Now is the time to look into alternative fuels...not when we run out. We need to stop using "disposable this" and "disposable that"...because eventually we will run out of space to dispose of things. We need to stop polluting our water...because eventually we will run out of water to drink. ETC... There are conflicting opinions and "facts" on so many subjects (global warming)...sometimes we just need to look past those and see the other reasons for change...the reasons that just make sense and don't need books full of "scientific" data to back them up |
