Quote: Officials club a dog to death on a street in Luoping county in southwest China's Yunnan province Saturday April 29, 2006. A county in southwestern China has killed as many as 50,000 dogs in a government-ordered campaign following the deaths of three local people from rabies, official media reported on Tuesday. The five-day massacre in Yunnan province's Mouding county spared only military guard dogs and police canine units, the Shanghai Daily reported, citing local media. (EyePress/AP Photo) Dogs being walked were taken from their owners and beaten on the spot, the newspaper said. Other killing teams entered villages at night, creating noise to get dogs barking, then honing in and beating them to death. Owners were offered 63 cents per animal to kill their dogs before the teams were sent in, the report said. The massacre was widely discussed on the Internet, with both legal scholars and animal rights activists criticizing it as crude and cold-blooded. The World Health Organization said more emphasis needed to be placed on prevention. "Wiping out the dogs shows these government officials didn't do their jobs right in protecting people from rabies in the first place," Legal Daily, a newspaper run by the central government's Politics and Law Committee, said in an editorial in its online edition. Dr. Francette Dusan, a WHO expert on diseases passed from animals to people, said effective rabies control required coordinated efforts between human and animal health agencies and authorities. "This has not been pursued adequately to date in China with most control efforts consisting of purely reactive dog culls," Dusan said. The Shanghai Daily said 360 of Mouding county's 200,000 residents suffered dog bites this year. The three rabies victims included a 4-year-old girl, the report said. "With the aim to keep this horrible disease from people, we decided to kill the dogs," Li Haibo, a spokesman for the county government was quoted as saying by the official Xinhua News Agency. Calls to county government offices rang unanswered on Tuesday. China has seen a major rise in the number of rabies cases in recent years, with 2,651 reported deaths from the disease in 2004, the last year for which data was available, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Experts have tied the rise in part to an increase in dog ownership, particularly in rural areas where about 70 percent of households keep dogs. Only about 3 percent of Chinese dogs are vaccinated against rabies, according to the center. Access to appropriate treatment is highly limited, especially in the countryside. |

F***ing morons! (Don't worry Ron, I censored myself).
Wouldn't requiring rabies vaccines by law as some more civilized societies do be a much better solution?!? Disgusting. I don't know much about rabies in people since it's basically a non-existent problem in North America... but isn't there vaccine/treatment if a person is bitten by an animal they aren't familiar with? This is just disgusting.... and very saddening. |
OMG... that is sickening. |

Its not non existant, but very much a problem in wild animals like racoons/fox/squirrels. There is a vaccine available, the person has to be treated promptly. Many towns in our area throw out a bait with rabies medicine to help reduce the incidence of transmittion in animals. What a heartbreaking story.......... |
This just makes my sick and very very angry!!!
The picture shows it all... How can so many people be so stupid?!?!?!?! OMG that poor little dog!!!!! poor little 50,000 babies!!!!! I don't care if this is some kind of blown up story by the government/media to increase anti-Chinese feelings, or whatever other reasons. That one picture makes my heart rip!! |
I can't even comment!!! |
What the *&^# is wrong with people? What a bunch of sicko's. |
And we're supposed to be the top of the food chain? Doesn't that require thinking?
They call that a solution? There are some days I'm not sure I want to be numbered among the humans...ok most days. |
I feel sick to my stomach after reading and looking at that picture |
That breaks my heart! Were they just killing any dog they ran into or just dogs with rabies? (just need clarification) I can't imagine a place where they could kill an animal that way. |
Sounds like any dog they found in the province was killed... How utterly horrible. Especially for a disease that is so easily preventable. |
Oh my gosh...that is horrible. All it would have taken was a preventative shot. |
DISGUSTING! It's so hard for me to think that people are so evil |
Sickening is all that I can say.
We are not allowed here to export pure breed dogs to certain countries our National Kennel council bans it, now I know why there is a ban to certain countries |
Unbelieveable. |
What do you say? |
It is terrible |
just heard about it on the news. still disgusts me. |
I cannot imagine someone coming into my home and beating my dog to death in front of me... that's just horrible.
The government officials obviously have no clue. |
I just can't get over this disturbing event.
A dog killing campagn to remove rabies is one thing, but "clubbing" it to death is another. If they had to massacre the animals the least they can do it let them die painless.. But I guess that's just asking too much from people that decided killing the dogs is the best resort for rabies prevention/intervention. Damn I am so filled up with anger and sorrow I don't know what to do!!!! |
Sorry to hear that. I don't know much about it. I will search the Internet to know more. |
Insanity. Can you imagine how the owner's were feeling? I can't imagine witnessing that. Or trying to hide my dog to protect them. They'd have to kill me first.
That is devastating that this is happening in today's world. |
Holy Crap!!!!
That just made me sick...poor babies...got to go hug my Muppets! |
Its horrible that they did that, especially that way! But, it concerns me even more thinking about the children that witnessed it, the hatred, resentment and lack of trust toward mankind that they could now harbor.
Aside from the killing aspect, reading this reminded me of an issue with pitbulls, and how the government is ................ It reminded me of the Jews and Hitler, and how.............. I guess it reminded me because, just like so many of you, I just can't understand how some can be so heartless, yet capable of loving. |
This BBC news article states even the 4000 dogs who were vaccinated were killed in case vaccines were not effective.

I just feel sick seeing that picture |
There are also many people blame this in China. And I’m wondering if they are still killing dogs now. |
COL! (crying out loud) My first thought and ambition when seeing this picture was to BEAT THAT AZZ-BITE Imbecile man with the bat held up THE SAME WAY HE is BEATING THAT POOR BABY LOVE DOGGY> HOW DARE HE..How would HE love to get BLUDGEONED to death with a STICK?? What kind of upbringing could a person possible have had to be so COLD BLOODED and CRUEL and HEINOUS. I am so very angry and sick to the core, I have to go and cry some more. |
well the Chinese have apalling human rights, so its no wonder is it bunch of ignorant ******** I would never, never travel to China, their beliefs and principles make me sick ! I remember seeing this here last year ! |
they have a different culture than we do. Given time and introduction to "Western Values" their society will change.
Then again, given time and introduction to "Eastern Values" our society will change too. |
Well there goes dinner!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I never looked at it. |
I am beginning to hate the Chinese. First, they kill my Winston at 4 1/2 with the poison in the dog food...now this. Maybe the Chinese should be banned from having dogs in the country at all!!! |
