I am going to be the first to say please contact your local oes rescue. They are the most qualified to help you place your dog with someone compatible. This could be very important in the safety and well being of not only your dog, but the adoptive family.
Please keep us posted, feel free to ask questions. You will find that everyone here is very friendly and informative. |
Hello and welcome to the forum. It's sad we're meeting like this.
I'm sure you've done a lot of soul searching before coming to this conclusion, and I'm sorry you're going through this right now. There are lots of options for you, including "surrendering" your dog to an OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG rescue. There is a list of rescue contacts, by state, here: http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml They will be in the BEST position to evaluate your boy, and place him in the best situation for him. They see Sheepdogs all the time, and have lists of qualified and screened SHEEPDOG owners. The mindset of OES rescue is "This time, it's all about the dog" and they make the placements frmo the dog's perspective! So very frequently the people go on a waiting list until just the right dog comes along. One thing; even though the OES Rescues deal with sheepdogs all the time, when they are in an unfamiliar environment they can be reserved and their complete personality sometimes doesn't show up until after placement. So, if your dog has been aggressive or has bitten please don't hesitate to tell them at the Rescue. This will enable them to find the right home that can deal with his personality, and prevent a tragedy from occuring for him. If you have ANY QUESTIONS AT ALL, please feel free to ask here. If we don't know the answers we can probably find someone who does! Also feel free to ask me privately through a PM. I don't have all the answers by any means, but I'll do my best to help you. |
Hi brooks1,
I am the Indiana OES Rescue Contact and have Private Messaged you with my e-mail address. We have several experienced people here in the state that are interested in adopting and/or fostering Old English Sheepdogs. Please contact me so we can discuss. Thanks, Nita |
If you decide not to place him through a rescue organisation please have him neutered before he lives your home. That is the best thing you can do for him. |
Just an update...
Michigan has another Old English Sheepdog! "Comet" was surrendered to OES Rescue in Indiana, groomed, neutered and updated on vaccinations. He spent a little over a week in our home and turned out to be an absolute sweetie. Yesterday, Nelson and I drove him to Lima, OH, to meet his new mom, who is from Clarkston, MI. Thanks to Geri House, Grannie Annie and Grace Fujikawa for all their help in getting this big guy placed in a fine home... even if it means one less sheepie in Indiana. |
Great job Nita!!! We know all of the work wasn't easy and with your surgery healing, you should be commended!

Here's Comet before his haircut...
....and Comet after his haircut. |
Thanks for helping this boy, Nita!
He's got pretty markings and such a sweet face. That first picture threw me for second. I see now that he's on a table, but at first glance, it looked like he was bigger than the car. |
