Flagstaff, AZ...Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival!

Tim, Bailey and I took a roadtrip up to Flagstaff this past weekend. We had two good reasons to go up there. First, we had record high temperatures here - 118 on Friday, 116 on Saturday. Yuck! It's much cooler up in the Northern AZ mountains. Second, it was the weekend of the Made in the Shade Beer Tasting Festival - more on that later.

We got a room at the Quality Inn. For the price it was fine - $85 a night plus $10 charge for Bailey. We got a cute letter addressed to "Dear Furry Guest" that stated the dog rules in a nice way, and a baggy of dog treats. There was a "Pet Area" for doggy business that was about 3 foot square - oh, please! A dog this size needs more space than that to sniff around before he gets down to business. We decided to just grab some plastic bags and take Bailey on regular walks.

We haven't been going to the dog park at home because of the heat, so I mapquested the two Bark Parks in Flagstaff and checked them both out. The best was the Bark Park at Thorpe Park - large, lots of tables and shade, between 6-12 dogs each time we were there. Bailey had a great time playing under the pine trees in the cooler air. The only problem we had in Flagstaff was dining - not many options that allow dogs. There is a great place called Macy's European Coffeehouse that has outside picnic tables, you can order take out and eat right outside. Macy's was right around the corner from the Sunday morning Farmer's Market, which had a booth selling organic doggy treats. Bailey found that booth right away and talked me into buying him bags of cheese and peanut buttter biscuits. There's also a ton of hiking trails in the Flagstaff area that allow leashed dogs which we didn't have time to check out this weekend.

Now - the beer! http://www.azbeer.com/Flagstaff.htm Tickets for the beer festival were $30 in advance (souvenir tasting mug plus 24 tasting coupons). There were about 40 booths, both local microbrewers and larger national brands like Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams. It was a busy event, a really diverse crowd made up of locals, escapees from the Phoenix area and lots of college students from Northern Arizona University. I really enjoy Belgian style beers so my favorites were the Dubbel from Prescott Brewing Co (here in AZ) and the 1554 from Fat Tire. Unfortunately they didn't allow dogs at the Festival so Bailey had to stay at the hotel. He was pretty tired from the dog park so he didn't seem to mind.

That sounds like a blast!
Sounds like you all had a great time!!

I am sure Bailey appreciated the break from the Phoenix heat!!
Woo hoo! 40 tasting coupons!

Can you get all 40 of Sam Adams? :D

Glad you had a great time.
Yup, you could keep going back to the same vendor if you wanted. Our friend has quite a few "tastes" of Strawberry Blonde Ale... And most of the vendors weren't diligent about collecting tickets so it was basically all-you-can-drink.
you didnt call me :( boy was i hot and miserable all weekend...we did go to the movies....

btw, you know its freakin' hot when your a/c is set at 76 and the temp inside the house never gets lower than 82 8O
