Really Cranky Lately

I need help.. Murphy has turned into a demon dog and I don't know why.

1st incident: when we went camping the long weekend in July, Murphy displayed behaviour that I never witnessed in him before. A few times over the weekend.. he growled at Dudley (which he has never done before) and actually snapped at him a few times and he had swiped a piece of fire wood from the pile and when Tanner (my 8 year) old when to take it from him he growled at him... God love Tanner.. he didn't take that crap from Murphy.. meaning.. it was a firm "no" and took the wood from him... then as we were packing up to leave.. we all got in the truck and Dudley got in first as always and then Troy loaded Murphy in (he won't jump in the truck) and Murphy proceed to try to rip Dud's head off. We were all shocked!!! Murphy has never done ANYTHING remotely like this before..

Last 3 weeks I have noticed a drastic change in his demoner at the dog park as well... he will not play with any of the dogs anymore.. no interaction what-so-ever.. all he wants to do is sit by me and if any other dogs come anywhere near me.. he tries to rip their face off.. it has gotten to the point that I have to keep him on his leash.

I have taken him to the vet for a througly check-up, got blood work done, got his urine checked, shaved him cause I thought he might just be hot from the weather.. changed his food yet again cause I thought his allegeries may be acting up.

Yesterday we went for a stoll in the park.. I kept Murph on his leash.. this couple were coming towards us with a Choc Lab Puppy.. Murphy was all excited to see them.. tail wagging, bum going.. and just as the puppy got close he was a snarling, snapping dog... and then when we went home.. I was lounging on the couch watching TV.. Murphy always lays between the couch and the coffee table.. Dudley came over to see me and Murphy Lunged at Dud and bit him in the side of the face......

What is up with him.. Troy's theory is that I baby him to much and he doesn't want anyone/thing near me... Really and truly.. it's like someone has come in an stolen my "social butterfly".. everyone has noticed a change in him, us, our family, his buddies at the dog park.. medically he is fine...

What could be. Help!!! any advice would be appreciated. It is freaking me out..

Oh my... :(
Sasha is fine with people and other dogs etc... but lately she has been a demon dog in other ways she is just acting up and doing things she should not do... like on the countertop opening the bread box and eating all the bread and buns.. outside she has been jumping onto the vehicles... getting into anything and everything she is not suppose to I feel like I have a human 2 year old... we have to keep a eye on her more.. we never had to before she was really good. I hope its just a phase.. she is just like a bad kid haha...I am not sure what to tell you about your dog but that does not sound good...we had Sasha camping on the weekend and she did well. Everyone loved her as usual.
One of my OES' used to do that. I finally bought a muzzle and when he exhibited the behavior, he got the muzzle. I'd leave it on for about 5 minutes, which is an eternity to a dog, and then removed it. It only took a couple muzzlings to convince him that he shouldn't be attacking any other dogs. I gave lots of praise when they interacted nicely.

I just kept it on hand, and when they started growling, I would show them the muzzle. That was all it took!

Muzzles or "Halties" mellows out dogs instantly.
Hmmm, Barney being a @#$$ too, lately. I have no idea what's gotten into him or what to do about it.

No advice, just sympathy.
I would have the vet double check that all testicular tissue was removed during his neuter, in case some was left it can cause hormone problems. I would also have them check his thyroid (can also cause imbalances), teeth, ears, anywhere he might be experiencing pain.
With temperment changes it's always a good idea to rule out medical causes first IMO
Have you checked for any change in his vision or his hearing? If there's a problem with his hearing he could be getting startled and responding with the "natural" defense instinct. Just have to rule everyting out one at a time, but like everyone else said, I would check for medical issues first.
How old is Murphy? Did the vet manipulate his legs and feel along the spine, neck, hip area, shoulders and elbows for any nerve twitches, pulled muscles or just general sorness.

It sounds like his sudden change in behaviour is defensive, like keeping others away that might bump him or aggrivate any soreness he is feeling.

Just a thought there :) Very strange such a change in his behaviour when he has not been like that before.

Hope you find out what is making him this way, sending wishes murphy will be back to his old self soon.
I don't have any additional suggestions beyond what others have said but I hope this turns out to be a passing (or treatable) condition. Any update on his behavior and possible medical causes?

I'd be interested to hear more about this. Seems like alot of the adolescents are starting to act out and, if medical causes have been ruled out, I wonder if it is a behavioral thing, testing limits, etc.
