Steveo... You're in for about 3-4 weeks of 'different' behaviours from your oes. She'll need lots of attention and reassurance during this time, and you'll have to keep a very close eye to make sure no males get near her. A fence is not good enough supervision. I have seen a dog jump or climb a fence, or even manage to 'do the deed' THROUGH a fence. There are chlorophyll tablets you can give her that will reduce the scent she gives to to help keep other males away, but from what I've heard that doesn't always work. Getting a dog spayed at 6 months of age doesn't impair their developement, and provides many benefits, such as greatly reducing the risk of certain cancers and infections. Not to mention that emotional frenzied feeling the dog must go through while in heat if she is not going to be bred. Some vets will spay a dog even while in heat, and some won't. I think there is some risk of higher blood loss due to increase blood supply to reproductive organs at this time, but I think it depends on the skill and experience of the vet. I would call your vet to see if he or she recommends waiting till the heat is over, or do it now. It's a decision you have to feel comfortable with as well, as there are always risks to any surgery.
Anyway, I would call your vet and see what they think... Good luck! |
Also, forgot to mention.... training is the key to the jumping behaviour. She is still a pup, and having her spayed won't likely solve this problem, in fact, it may be even more important now that ever to train her not to jump, because after she is spayed you don't want her jumping and ripping out stitches. |
Thank you for your help Willowsprite. I am going to phone my vet tomorrow afternoon and see what he recomends. Speak to you soon. Cya from England.
Again, helpful advice. |
What did your vet recommend? |
It's odd that you should pick this post to bump back up Ron, since I have been wondering if Dancer might go into her first heat soon. LOL I found out her mother had her first heat at 8 months, and Dancer is 7 months and acting the same as my first oes did when she went into her first season. Still no discharge though, so who knows. I think if there were going to be any it would have happened by now.... so maybe it is just adolescent 'testing' behaviour.... |
Don't bet on it. Not all dogs have a great deal of discharge, others are a great mess. With all the hair, noticing the swelling is not as easy as say, a hound.
One need not wait for the first season to spay. That way you miss all the fun. Personally, I'd wait to age 6 months.....hoping the first season doesn't occur first. Sheepieboss |
Dancer is shaved down, and I have noticed some swelling, but still no discharge. I'm not getting her spayed, I plan on breeding her. |
