We are both in funk lately and decided we need to get away together (sans husbands) for a couple days. We checked the map to see what cool place are approximately 1/2 way between us. I think we've settled on Atlanta (although knowing Nancie, this could change at any moment, right up until the second we walk into the hotel). We are planning on going in October. I was in Atlanta once for business and only saw conference rooms and a few restaurants. So....I'm wondering if any of you live in Atlanta or have traveled there and can recommend hotels and things for us to do. Thanks! |

Here is Atlanta's visitors website:
http://www.atlanta.net/index.html There is plenty to keep you busy while you are there! |
A girls-only weekend is a great idea! I'm planning one for August with some of my college girlfriends.
I don't know anything about Atlanta and I've nothing to say one way or the other. I just wanted to suggest that you also consider Charleston, SC. I've always wanted to go there -- it looks so cute and scenic and combines city + ocean. . . Just another option as long as things are still undecided . . . |
That actually was one we talked about. SC always looks so beautiful. I've never been there, so wasn't sure what that had to offer. |
Hi Deb
Hmmm...I live in Atlanta I would vote for y'all to get-a-way to Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA Diane |
Charleston is a beautiful, old colonial city with lots to see, fine dining, etc. plus it is closest to the ocean of all eastern seaboard cities. I think the beach is like 15 minutes from downtown. To me, it has always seemed like the perfect combination of charm and nature. But I've never been there. |
Never been to Atlanta, but I've been to Savannah...LOVE IT!! So beautiful and fun and historic. |
I'd love to go to Savannah, but! only little planes fly in there. And since I'm such a lousy flier, I have to fly on BIG planes! We also thought of Boston, but everything there is really expensive! |
Chris's friend Eric is from Atlanta, and he said it is very confusing to get around in, b/c of the roads.
There you go, the only nuget of knowledge i have about Atlanta Shannon |
I would recommend St. Augustine, FL. Easy to fly into the Jacksonville airport and we're an hour away.( I just flew to Chicago on a nonstop flight for about $200.00. Only a 2.5 hr flight.) Great beaches and charming downtown. Lots of good resturants. I use to live in Chicago and loved it so much here that I just picked up and moved. Can't say that I'd recommend Atlanta. The other choices of Savanah and Charlston are good ones. |
Hey, I live in Charleston. SC. Charleston is a wonderful and touristy city. Lots to do all with in walking distance if yoiu stay downtown. Their are carriage rides, ghost tours, lots of outdoor shopping, great restaurants, and good night life. Also don't forget the beaches, very beautiful. If you bring dogs, we also have dog parks. If you want any information let me know. The only downside about Charleston, SC is not Cheap to fly into or out of.
If you chose Atlanta be ready for Traffic, traffic traffic. Buckhead is a very nice area to stay in though. Shopping, food, etc. Shelly |
I lived in Atlanta for 3 months and have spent time in Charleston & Savannah.
If you like old & quaint then I would definitely not go to Atlanta. The city itself is very spread out and not really a "walking" city. And the touristy part of Buckhead is pretty small. They have some decent museums & restaurants but that is all I can really comment about. I really did not enjoy living there. Sorry Atlanta people! I found more to do in Charleston than Savannah, and I think the cities are similiar in the historical aspect. Plus Savannah is only about an hour or so away from Charleston by car and it's a nice drive if you want to day trip it. Both cities are very quaint & you get a nice sense of the southern flavor. There are a couple of beautiful Plantation homes with glorious gardens that you can visit. Lots of water tours available & October is a really nice time to go there. Haven't been to St Augustine but have heard it's nice. If you really like history, why not come to Philadelphia?? Also, really nice time of year to visit & btw. Val & I, we can steer you towards things to do. Lots of walking tours on cobblestone & brick paved streets in Old City. Air Tran & Southwest offer cheap fares & the hotel packages aren't bad either. |
Hey- I live in Atlanta as well, but tend to agree with Diane on the Charleston or Savannah route...
Atlanta is fun - great dining, the W Hotel is beautiful (and doggie friendly ) ... there is the Fox Theater, great shoppping.... To me, being close to water is a MUST for peace and relaxation- thus my vote for Savannah or Charleston! I have been to both and both cities are equally fun- again, great food, shops, spas, hotels. Good luck! If you decide on Atlanta, Chipper and family would love to meet you!! |
I used to live in Atlanta - pleanty of stuff to do. You can visit the Coke Museum. Little Five Points was fun - but a little scarey because of the homeless people - but the last time I went they had a weird bar that looked like a skull on the outside. There is the Varsity - a really big and cool fast food joint that you've just got to see. There is also the High Museum of Art. I have visited there about 6 or 7 times - they usually get some really good art by some really famous people. There is also Six Flags if you want to check out an amusement park.
There is also the CNN center and I believe a botanical garden - the name escapes me. Let's not forget Martin Luther King Jr.'s historical home and other great places to check out black history. That should keep you busy for a few days. If you want to visit Charleston and Savannah they are ok too... of course I live right next to both places - they are similar to Beaufort to me. |
I've been to Atlanta twice. I can't wait to go back. the shopping and restuarants were great. The Underground Mall and the Coke factory were amazing. Each time we stayed at The Westin on Peachtree Street. Nice restuarants and Jazz clubs around but don't walk alone, can be a little scary. |
I'm glad to be getting some positive feedback, since that is probably where we'll go. We will only be there a couple days, and I remember Atlanta really being pretty. The other suggestions are great, but since we will be going in October (possible hurricane season) we don't want to be near a beach. I will check out the two hotels mentioned. Thanks! |
We have the new Georgia Aquarium- a must if you come to visit!!! |
I just saw that ! I was looking at the Westin Peachtree website. Its looks gorgeous !!!!!!! |
Its a gorgeous Hotel, great food and Drinks. Awesome Pool too. I got an amazing deal on it from expedia. I think we paid about $60.00 US a night. |
$60.00 that is amazing. I used to work in Hotels so i am very familiar with how they do pricing. $60.00 i think i am in shock
