My dear machine here is developing a "tick." Once in awhile when I open a window, the machine has a seizure(?) and begins opening the same window, over and over and can't be stopped. Esc doesn't work, ctrl/alt/delete doesn't work, nothing works except cutting power. Any ideas and suggestions? I vaguely remember this happening right before a previous machine killed itself. Are we talking another suicide here? susan |

Yikes. Possibly. Have you done a virus scan recently? I would copy anything precious to an external hard drive ASAP. . . |
My Internet Explorer browser does the exact same thing, but in my case I think it's due to having the Alexa toolbar installed. |
Sounds like you have a lot of "Adware" downloads on your machine.
Have you ever run a Adware scan? There are ones on the internet you can download for free... http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ |
I know close to nothing about computers, but having recently went through an expensive repair, I OFFER YOU MY SYMPATHIES!
Good luck, hope some techie gives you good cheap advice that fixes your problem. |
I virus scan weekly and adware almost daily. I clear cache often as well as the ?? gosh I guess you'd call it the search file. So the machine probably isn't infected or constipated. I remember one person said her machine had been taken over.....how would one discover that other than slow running...?

Possibly a browser hijacker?
As Ron said, any extra toolbars you may have installed can cause problems like what you described. That may have nothing to do with it, but I'd try uninstalling anything like that first. |
I haven't installed any new tool bars, but the cable added a new one a year or so ago that I never use.
How does one go about removing a tool bar should I decide to dump it? s. |
I'd recommend dumping all the third-party extras you may have installed...toolbars, widgets, etc.
I'd also submit that you should try switching to a new browser, specifically, Mozilla Firefox. I use a Mac, so I'm very biased, but as far as my experiences with PCs, IE - though it is meant to work seamlessly with the rest of Windows - usually does not. They are constantly publishing patches and fixes for IE that you need to download and install. This makes me wonder about the integrity of the program... Also check your system tray (lower right corner) to see if there are any programs running that you haven't installed, or aren't using. Try the "add/remove programs" option in the control panel to see what else is going on. There are always a million possible combinations to try...the only other suggestion I might offer is to...well, buy a MAC! Good Luck! |
I keep my tray down to the minimum......I'm not one for add-ons. I don't down load games, programs, etc. I don't tip toe thru the registry.....
You are right about IE and their patches. Briefly considered one of the latest updates may be causing this........if it didn't happen to old computer previously. If I had to describe how it starts.........it is as if I'm too fast opening windows, clicking here and there and the machine can't keep up. I've got memory/Ram up the wazoooo and on cable, so speed shouldn't be a problem. Oh well, chips do die. I've considered Foxfire.....seriously considered it. Kim Komando keeps pushing it. And as for a Mac............ditto. I may have to switch over next computer. Thanks for your thoughts. susan |
It was my computer that was hijacked. It was being very slow. I'm actually glad it happened and had to get a tech out because I wouldn't have known otherwise. He also installed the Mozilla Firefox. I don't think it cost anything. You can have that and whatever you normally use too. He also put in a different antivirus program. I'm using the Firefox to try it. You might want to consider having a tech check it out just to make sure no one is tracking what you're doing and stealing passwords, etc.
Now I'm totally paranoid about opening anything. Getting a new computer soon too. Just hubby hasn't had time to go and buy choose one. |
