Was wondering if this is just part of her being such a "little lady" or if anyone else has experienced the same with their dogs. Just wondering. Guinevere's Dad, Kevin |

Hi Kevin,
My 16 week old OES Phoebe pants all the time so I don't think it's a "lady" thing! I have a question for you - Did your dog's coat change color yet? At about what age does that start. I can see silver underneath Phoebe's coat when I brush her and was wondering at what age the coat completely changes. It's a shame really, I love the black and white! Nice to meet you and I'll talk to you soon Ann |
Hi Ann -
I would guess their coats start to change (they loose their "puppy fur") at around 5 -6 months. The black and white never really dissappers they just get more of a grey and white, and the undercoat gets much heavier as time goes on. It is a lot to keep up with, but fortunately Guinney seems to like being brushed. Glad I started it when she was still a puppy! That's my experience anyway. Good to meet you as well. Kevin Z. |
Hi everyone, I too miss the beautiful black and white puppy coat but it is very interesting to see the coat change. It is like owning a chameleon! It seems my dogs coat has gone through a few changes and he is only a year. It is very important to establish a good grooming routine when they are young. Lots of praise and treats for good behavior. Get them used to having their feet checked, nails clipped and ears handled. It make life easier for you when it is time to pluck out that fuzzy ear or trim those hobbit feet! It also makes a better time for your friend when the veterinarian has to examine him! I trained my boy on a large grooming table. He loves to be brushed and readily jumps up on the table when I asked him. Start bathing them young and you may want to invest in a force dryer. It saves a lot of dry time. Again lots of praise. If you teach them that grooming can be a fun thing you will have a wonderful adult dog that will turn peoples heads when you proudly take him for a walk. One more thing before I stop gabbing, Start your dog off right by taking them to a reputable training class. Puppy kindergarden is a great way to start socalizing your baby. A trained dog is a happy dog. Take care. |
Dogs pant to get air. It could be a natural cooling system for her. You can't rule out a respiratory disorder until Guinny is vet checked. My Molly pants when she gets warm either from running around or during April to let me know that she prefers a puppy cut in the warm GA climate. She also drools more when she is warm as this is another way that a dog expels excess heat. Sometimes I wish that she could sweat.
As for the coat, some never do change color. That is unusual. The coat color can start changing from 1 year to 2 years. Beware the transition coat! This could be the roughest grooming time of your life. |
Kevin,
We have a 3 month old OES pup that also doesn't pant or have his tongue out. I thought it was strange, too. It's nice to know he's not the only one! I'm hoping that if his mouth is closed most of the time, he won't be able to drool ever! :D Heather |
While Molly does pant and also stick her entire head into the water dish to cool off that doesn't mean anything.
My other OES, Bonnie doesn't pant and she is 3 yrs old. As for the drooling, I have changed my opinion about what is and isn't drool. I have decided that Molly's is a "wet face" This is caused by the buckets of water that she will stick her face in. I always have hand towels handy to dry her sweet face and beard. I have met some droolers over the past couple of weeks. Their flews (lower lips) should be close to the teeth but are so loose that they look to be hanging. This is what I call the St. Bernard syndrome. Each one of these guys have slimy drool. I noticed the difference when I forgot to towel a beard off before tickling the chin. ALWAYS towel off that wet chin!! |
Dogs do it when they're hot, they can't take the "clothes" of, and the only way to cool them self is with the tongue. so... Dogs do not sweat. They pant in order to cool themselves. And the reason why she has never done it before is because the puppy coat isn't as hot as the double thick adult coat. http://www.wisegeek.com/why-do-dogs-pant.htm -Hope it helps |

My dogs pant after running and when they are in pain. So, if you;re pup is not panting, I wouldn't worry about it! She is probably not as hot as she could be. Panting is a way of cooling BUT it could also be a sign of pain. Don't worry if she is not panting |
