I LET MY DOGS OUT ON YESTERDAY MORNING AND CODY JUMPED HARD AND GOT AWAY FROM ME. HE RAN TO MY NEIGHBOR'S YARD AND TOOK A POOP. ( YES I KNOW BAD) SO I WENT RIGHT AWAY AND CLEANED IT UP. NO HARM NO FOUL. WE WENT BACK INSIDE TO FINISH WATCHING A MOVIE. A FEW HOURS LATER IT STARTED TO RAIN. THAT NIGHT I WENT OUT MY FRONT DOOR AND THERE WAS A WATER LOGED PILE OF DOG POO JUST SITTING THERE AND VERY STINKY NOW THAT THE RAIN HAD DONE ITS STUFF. NEXT TO IT WAS A NOTE THAT READ IT IS THE LAW TO HAVE YOUR DOG ON A LEASH AND THAT MY LETTING MY DOGS RUN FREE IS AGAINST THE LAW AND THAT PEOPLE IN THE NEIGHOBORHOOD CARE FOR THEIR LAWNS AND THE DOG POO WILL KILL THE GRASS. SO COULD I PLEASE KEEP MY DOGS ON A LEASH. O' FIRST OF IF A DOG IS RUNNING WITH A LEASH TRAILING BEHIND THEN THERE WAS AN ATTEMPT TO WALK THE DOG ON A LEASH. SECON I ABSOULTLY KNOW I PICKED UP AFTER MY DOG. THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE MORE TAME DOGS THAN ME AND THEY KEEP THEIR DOGS OFF LEASH ALL THE TIME. IT COULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF THEM. IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO AN OLE DOG HATING EVIL WITCH OF A WOMAN WHO HAS WAY TOO MUCH FREE TIME TO WATCH HER GRASS GROW. LAST I CHECKED THERE ARE PEOPLE DIEING DIFFERENT WARS ALL OVER THE MIDDLE EAST. THERE IS A FOOD CRISIS IN LOTS OF COUNTRIES NOT TO MENTION AIDS SPREADING. THERE ARE SO MANY REALLY WORTHY THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT BUT NO SHE WORRIES ABOUT DOG POO KILLNG HER GRASS. IN THE 6 MONTHS I HAVE BEEN IN THIS NEIGHBORHOON SHE NOT ONCE INTRODUCED HERSELF, O BUT SHE CAN NOW START THE DOG POO WARS. SO TO TOP IT OFF NOW POOR OLIVE IS THE VICTIM. sHE WAS ON HE RUN IN MY YARD AND THE WOMAN WAS TALKING IN MY NEIOGHBORS YARD. OLIVE WAS BARKING( ITS WAHTR A DOG DOES) AND THE WOMAN WAS ANNOIED AND STARTED THROWING DIRT ON MY SWEET LITTLE GIRL. NOT TO MENTION THAT I HAD TO GIVE OLIVE ANOTHER BATH AFTER WARDS BECAUSE SHE WILL TRACK THE DIRT IN MY HOUSE. I AM A NICE PERSON, BUT THIS MEANS WAR I TELL YOU. I WANT THIS WOMAN TO GO DOWN IN DOG HATING FLAMES |

I'm sorry that your neighbor misunderstood another dog's poo for Olive's. I think the note she wrote was very tactful & polite.
Your neighbor has a right not to have dogs poop in her yard & bark repeatedly. Yes, dogs do bark, but it doesn't mean your neighbor should have to listen to it and you should do something to try to control it. I hope you re-think your positioning to make war with your neighbor and try to sympathize with her concerns. You all have to live there together, and if she wants to have a lovely, unblemished lawn, it's her choice. |
I'm not sure that a polite note next to a pile of dog poo is very polite. |

Seems to me she said that the dog got away from her, not that she allows her dogs to roam free.
I don't understand the approach some posters are taking... from the post I read, I see the neighbor as an *$$ who can't tolerate the most minor of accidental inconveniences. You know, my dog(s) have gotten loose a couple of times over the years, too! I'm glad a neighbor hasn't decided to take umbrage. |

I seem to always look at it from the other perspective because of many bad experiences with irresponsible pet owners. Maybe this neighbor has had the same thing and has just had enough. Doesnt make being rude right but it might give you a hint where she is coming from. If you can communicate with this person...you could let her know that you are not irresponsible, and youre very sorry for the accident and you will do everything possible to prevent it from happening ever again. If she's still rude after that......then im with ron... |

I guess I saw the post differently - wasn't trying to stir things up.
I'm sure the neighbor is a knucklehead, but I was assuming it wasn't the first time the dog ran free, given the neighbor's response to the poo. Regardless, I think that if there is a misunderstanding, then Laura should approach the neighbor tp set her straight and try to be as empathetic as possible, granted that she may be a dog hater. My reaction was also about the barking dog "it's what a dog does" comment. If a dog is outside barking its head off, then the owner should be responsible/considerate enough to bring the dog inside, etc. There are a few families in our town who leave their dogs outside in their yard barking & it's more than a nuisance. |
Gads... I feel a rant coming so I'll apologize before hand.
Quote: I don't understand the approach some posters are taking... from the post I read, I see the neighbor as an *$$ who can't tolerate the most minor of accidental inconveniences. Ummm... there is a brief bit of info here that you might be overlooking. Quote: THERE ARE SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO HAVE MORE TAME DOGS THAN ME AND THEY KEEP THEIR DOGS OFF LEASH ALL THE TIME. Since the poop was not from THIS dog, it belonged to someone else's dog. I don't blame this person for being peeved because all the neighborhood dogs are using her lawn as a bathroom. Her approach was sick though... she should have simply called animal control to handle the problem. Or a good camera will positively I.D. the offenders... she could head over to AC with the evidence so the owners can be ticketed. See the little blurb at the bottom of my signature? Take FooFoo for a walk to cra* in someone else's yard or public place so you never have to clean up the mess in your own yard. I'm sick of it too. We were walking at a public park last week where signs are posted that you must clean up after your dogs. I actually told a lady walking the other way that the huge pile of poop on the paved path was not MINE and showed them the bags I carry. The next person that I see not cleaning up after their dog, I'm hollering, "Just a minute and I'll get you a bag so you can take that with you!" A brief walk out to the mailbox and you may have it all over your shoes... talk about a great thing to track through the house. Heaven forbid you go outside barefoot Are these dogs on a monthly wormer? Gross. How about the neighbor that cleaned out his dogs' kennel and threw it over the fence into our yard? I don't think he would like us throwing our even daily poo pickup over his way. Quote: THERE ARE SO MANY REALLY WORTHY THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT BUT NO SHE WORRIES ABOUT DOG POO KILLNG HER GRASS. The point is it's her lawn/property so your dog should not be on it. If this was a once and only once occurrence, I'd take that note next door and apologize profusely explaining that the dog got away from you by accident and you will do everything you can so it doesn't happen again. A leash dragging after a running dog is also an example of "well they're on a leash" mentality and a dog that is not in anyone's custody and control. It's a good example of a dog that is hit by a car and then someone cries about the injustice that their dog died but never once realized it was because of their own negligence. Yes, accidents will happen but the same accidents don't repeatedly happen. There is nothing more irritating than people not controlling their dogs. WE have an obnoxious little barker... Kaytee gets over excited sometimes and starts barking her head off as soon as she's out the door. We use a citronella no-bark spray collar on her... if she barks through it she goes back in the house 'til she calms down. With 6 dogs you simply have GOT to think of the neighbors. Quote: THE WOMAN WAS ANNOIED AND STARTED THROWING DIRT ON MY SWEET LITTLE GIRL.
THAT was mean and uncalled for ... if it happens again, report it. The saying, "good fences make good neighbors" is very true. Before this festers into something terrible, I'd go next door, finally introduce myself, apologize and take steps to prevent it from happening again... then go on with life. |

Though "wars" involving poop could be kinda funny, I don't think that's what either of you want...I'm a much bigger fan of this approach. The ounce of prevention idea. I guess we are fortunate to live in a friendly neighborhood, but the point here is that when any neighborhood dogs/cats/deer, whatever get loose, the othe rcommunity members know and respect the owners. We constantly have cats roaming our yard, eating our fish, etc, and I have several times approached their owners about this. I am able to do so because of the rapport we have. There's no harm in introducing yourselves! I think it also makes it easier to understand the circumstances: e.g. neighbor buys an 8 wk old King Charles Spaniel, and leaves it alone, first night home, for an entire Saturday night. Of course, it's yelping intolerably for 8 hours. Now, i was annoyed, but when she returned, she explained the circumstances for leaving the dog, and profusely apologized. Again, this could have festered if we didn't feel comfortable talking. There's no reason to take advantage of neighborly generosity, but I"m just saying that it does help if there's ever extenuating circumstances (dog getting loose, etc). Good luck- and if you do decide to get into a neighborly war, I'd be more than happy to help you think of some good pranks |
Quote: I am able to do so because of the rapport we have.
I agree. Please try to find a solution to this problem. This lady is already starting to head down that road of strange behavior by throwing dirt on your dog. The same neighbor you make an enemy of today may someday be the nut case that throws something terrible in your yard. And don't kid yourself... there ARE people who WILL do this. Sure, you can sue them IF you can prove they did it but it won't bring back your dog. They may also simply ignore the fact that your dog has accidentally escaped without your knowledge HOPING "that darn dog" gets hit by a car this time. These same neighbors, if you can make amends, may someday be your best allies should there be a fire and make an effort to get your dog out or at least let the fire department know one is inside. Or they may immediately notify you that your dog is loose or help you look for your dog should it accidentally escape. |
I can relate to both sides of this situation...

I would go and explain to your neighbour that your dog got away from you and yes your dog did poop on her lawn, but as a responsible pet owner, you cleaned it up promply....this is not a daily occurance, you suspect that "others" have not been so responsible and maybe she should address it with them. I have planed my yard around the fact that I have two dogs...... cat pee and poo did not go into the planning of my yard. What I do when this happens is calmly visit the people who belongs to the feline and explain to them that as a responsible pet owner they need to ensure that their animals are contained to their own yard for their own safety. I cannot count how many times I have heard "they are cats.. that's what cats do.. roam" I then explain that "dogs belong to a pack".. my pack stays in their own space.. becuase if they didn't I'm sure someone would call the dog catcher... and as the owner of the cat.. it's their responsiblity to ensure that animal control is not called to pick up their cat.... if this doesn't work... sometimes.. I have resorted to using the hose....I am not proud of the fact.. but it's something I have to do.. Murphy does not like cats.. if a cat came into our fenced yard and Murphy did some harm to the cat.. guess who would be at fault...my vicious dog.. even though I have taken every precaution to ensure that Murphy and Dudley have a Safe and Secure place inside our yard. If I witnessed someone throwing something on my dogs while they were contained in their own yard.....I would be wild.. I don't know what I would do... would I call the police...the SPCA...I think I would want to physically harm them but hopefully, I would be more mature and try to settle the situation like adults.... even though I would want to grind their face into the dirt. As for the barking...yes dogs bark... but a barking dog is an annoying dog... even to me.. a dog owner.. |
I must have it good. All of my neighbors have dogs, can't think of one that doesn't. Once, Max got across the street and went to the bathroom on their lawn. As I was picking it up the neighbors pulled in and told me not to worry about, it happens. I do have one neighbor, whose dogs are always going in my driveway, but I just clean it up.....we have to still live next to each other.
Sorry you are having such a hard time. I do have one next door neighbor, who would probably do that too. He lives right next door and we don't speak, he's very mean. |
LOOKS LIKE I MUST EXPLAIN FURTHER. THE DOG THAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM WAS CODY MY FOSTER, AND I MUST TAKE EXTRA CARE WITH HIM AND I WAS CARELESS AND HE GOT AWAY( HE CAN ALSO OPEN DOORS EVEN LOCKED ONES I AM FINDING NOT THE TOP LOCK BUT THE BOTTOM IS NO PROBLEM FOR HIM) CODY WAS THE ONE WHO CAUSED THE POO TROUBLE. OLIVE MY PUPPY WAS THE ONE OUT IN THE YARD ON A RUN AND SHE WAS NOT BARKING HER HEAD OFF UNTILL ANOTHER LADY WITH A TOY POODLE (NOT ON A LEASH) STOPED TO TALK TO MY NEIGHBOR AND THE LADY WHO CAUSED THE TROUBLE. tHE LADY WHO CAUSED THE TROUBLE LIVES 2 HOMES AWAY. SHE KICKED DIRT ON OLIVE THOUGH HER FRIEND'S DOG WAS THE CAUSE OF THE COMOTION. WHEN I SAW HER DO IT I YELLD FOR HER TO STOP SHE SAID MY DOG WAS CAUSING THE TROUBLE ONLY BY THEN THE TOY POODLE WAS GOING CRAZY TOO AND I JUST PUT OLIVE INSIDE AND FINNISHED MY LAWN WORK. TO AS WELL CLARIFY CODY LEFT YESTERDAY EVENING FOR A TRIAL RUN WITH A NEW HOME, BUT THIS MORNING THERE WAS ANOTHER PILE OF POO ON MY DOORSTEP AND IT COULD NO POSSIBLY HAVE COME FROM CODY BEING HE LEFT YESTERDAY EVENING AND HAD NOT BEEN LOOSE SINCE. SO NOW THE LADY SAYS " WELL IT MUST BE THE OTHER DOG" BUT OLIVE IS A PUPPY AND DOES NOT MAKE THAT BIG A PILE ( I KNOW GROSE BUT TRUE) I TOLD HER IF SHE LEFT MORE POO AT MY DOOR I WOULD REPORT HER FOR VANDALISM ONLY I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF I CAN REALLY DO THAT. FIRS I WAS MAD NOW I JUST WANT THE CRAZY LADY TO QUIT LEAVING POO AT MY DOOR. cAN YOU TEST POO IN A LAB AND MATCH IT LIKE DNA, MAYBE THEN SHE WILL BELIEVE THAT IT WAS NOT ME! OR MY DOG(S) ANYWAY I AM REALIZING SHE IS OLDER I AM YOUNG AND SHE WILL NOT ADMIT SHE COULD BE WRONG. SHE JUST REALLY HATES LARGE DOGS I GUESS |
I think it's definitely going too far for her to continue leaving "gifts" on your doorstep.
If you've explained it was not your dogs, I'm not sure what other recourse you really have than to perhaps at least call the police and ask them what you should/can do about it. In regards to other parts of the discussion, Dancer is a barker, she drives me nuts sometimes, but if she barks at my neighbors and I can't get her to stop I bring her inside immediately. My neighbors all have dogs, I think every single person on my street does, but not one leaves a barking dog outside, we all respect each others rights to have peace and quiet Sky has been getting loose on me the last few days as we work out a new routine involving my newly fenced yard. LOL Sky takes off to the neighbor across the street who have a chocolate lab, and the two of them go down to the river and play with frogs My neighbor across the street has been so nice about my little kidnapper....she brings Sky home and just laughs about it. LOL I think I have the problem solved though (she was crawling under the deck) but I'm glad to know my neighbors are all dog lovers and would protect my furkids if need be. |
I do NOT recommend this....but, she would find a pile outside each of her door's the next morning even if I had to go to the dog park to find enough. Sounds like the old bitty just wants to pick and your the unlucky neighbor. As for her assaulting Olive, that was going way too far. I would have reported her to the police as well as the Humane Society ( seems like cruelity to me ). |
Why stop at the dog park?
Why stop at the canine variety? |
And I thought I was being bad??? |
That really bothers me that someone can be so insensitive to worry about her lawn. UGH! I guess I just don't understand people who hate dogs because I love them so much. Sorry to hear that had to happen to you. |
LAURENALICE wrote: THIS MORNING THERE WAS ANOTHER PILE OF POO ON MY DOORSTEP
Call the police, file a complaint and ask for their advice. If your neighbor is this crazy, it's best for you to get it on record before she does something even more horrible. |
We can get so defensive about our dogs...because they are our babies. However...consider that this woman may care about her lawn/garden the way we do for our dogs.
There are many people who put as much time and care into their yards as we do our dogs. If your neighbor is like this I can understand why she is upset. Unfortunately she has chosen you as a target. What you need to do is go to her house and introduce yourself. Explain what happened with your dog getting loose. Also explain that you returned and picked up the poop. Tell her that any poop she is now finding in her yard is not from your dogs. If she continues to place poop on your front stoop...call the police and file a complaint. Also let her know that you don't appreciate her throwing dirt on your dog. Explain that if Olive is barking and disrupting the neighborhood throwing dirt on her is not going to stop the barking. If anything it will make Olive bark more. Let her know that if Olive is barking excessively that she should knock on your front door and let you know. Then you can investigate why Olive is barking so much and hopefully stop the barking or bring her inside. It looks like you are going to have to take the high road on this....since your neighbor has already taken the low road. Hopefully you will be able to work this out and peace can return to your neighborhood. |
Leaving the second pile was way overboard. I'd report it in a second. |
i WENT OVER LAST NIGHT TO TRY TO EXPLAIN THE SITUATION, AND NOW I JUST FEEL STUPID. IT TURNS OUT THE LADY IS NOT ON HER ROCKER. HER HUSBAND ANSWERED THE DOOR. I EXPLAINED THE SITUATION AND HE GOT ALL RED IN THE FACE, AND EXPLAINED THAT SOMETIMES SHE HAD MEMORY LOSS. I THINK THE DISEASE THAT I CAN'T SPELL BUT YOU KNOW THE ONE WHERE YOU LOOSE YOU MEMORIES. APERENTLY. SHE ONLY HAS HER YARD AND YES SHE IS NOT FOND OF DOGS. i HOWEVER CAN'T BLAME HER FOR THE POO THING SINCE SHE IS NOT IN HER RIGHT MIND. tHE HUSBAND SAID TO CALL HIM IF I HAVE ANYMORE PROBLEMS AND HE WILL HANDLE IT. SO I GUESS THAT'S THAT. STILL IS SHE KICKS ANYTHING AT OLIVE AGAIN MENTAL STATE ASIDE I WILL TACKLE HER. WELL THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT, AND I GUESS GOOD TO KNOW THE "CRAZY LADY" AS I LABLED HER IS KINDA REALLY CRAZY IN A WAY SO NOW I MUST FORGIVE HER. |
Probably alzheimers or dementia... that is so tough. A neighbor lady had it and she would go around the neighborhood looking for her "kids" that were actually now grown and had moved away or she'd be looking for her garbage. It was so very sad.
Each one of us has at one time or another felt and said things that we later felt bad about after we learned the other side of the story. It's probably something to do with human nature. I'm so glad you went over and spoke with the husband. At least now you know what you're dealing with. You will need to keep a close eye on Olive when she's outside so there are no encounters with the neighbor lady. |
