Coffee Breath?

Hi, I just got my 7week old OES puppy today. He has eaten only once (about 11am), has peed twice and has had 5 bowel movements. They are loose and yellow, not watery, but just enough to be impossible to get out of the grass. Another thing, and I could just be making this up, but he has coffee breath. It smells like coffee.
He's otherwise active, playing, romping, chewing on and shaking his stuffed puppy. He's been napping, but not as much as I assumed he would, just about 10-15 minutes at a time.

Should I be worried, or is he just a little turned around on his first day? Does anyone else have a dog with coffee breath?

You should definitely be worried. Sounds exactly the same as what my puppy had.......coccidia. It produces stools that are the consistency of pudding with mucous and can be yellow. It's very contagious among puppies. Once you clear it up in a week with sulfa medication, it can come back from them being reinfested again from the areas where they have pooped.

Some of the other members of the forum recommend giving the puppy canned pumpkin and yogurt in their food and that helped.

Definitely see your vet and mention coccidosis and see if that is the problem.

Make sure you try to clean up when your puppy poops extremely well.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Yes I'd be worried. Besides the fact that 7 weeks is still too young to be away from the mother, what you are describing does sound like a big problem.
Lack of appetite on the first day is one thing, I'd even say that if he was throwing up yellow looking substance it would be okay. (Having nothing in the stomach and nerves would lead to that.) Having yellow bowel movements means that he has no substantial matter in his body and he's passing what he has left. He either hasn't been weened to solid food (another reason he won't eat properly) or he is ill. If he is ill it could be any number of things.
I would take him to the vet as soon as you are able. Little puppies can't deal well with being sick for very long. Watch for signs of dehydration, pale gums, tenting skin and listless behavior. See if he will drink a little water or watered down pedialyte; even licking ice cubes will be good.
Last but certainly not least, contact the breeder and tell them what is going on and see if anyone else in the litter is having any problems. Many times these are very contagious problems and the whole litter will be showing signs.
Good luck and please let us know what is happening!
We have his first vet appointment tomorrow. He's drinking fine. He ate all of his food this morning. The breeder said the puppies have been away from the mom for a week and they've been eating solid food. He slept though the night in the crate with no whining, no accidents, and woke me up with a bark today at 5 to go out and pee.

His bowel movements are still soft, but much less frequent.

As for being too young, I'd have to say that opinions are like belly buttons and everybody has one.
I would suspect that his BM's may be soft due to stress of a new place, smellls, environment etc. Good to get him checked, of cource, but sometimes even different water can set them off.

It is not so much the weaning, but the behavioral aspect. The weeks from 4 to 8 is where they lstart to learn doggy language, and how to play nice and control their bite. This is from being with thier siblings. Some breeders don't place their pups before 10 weeks to help the pups out in this way.

There are ways you can teach him, but it is harder to do. It would be great if you could find some puippies his age to play with. They take puppies at puppy social classes as young as 8 weeks. They still have immunities from their moms and the boosters they have had already, and presumeably there are only pups with the same shots etc.

It's not just opinion, in some states, it's the law as to how old pups can be sold at.

I never knew this and I found it really interesting. It is so nice to understand the reasoning behind laws. I had always heard and understood that pups should stay with their litter for at least 8 weeks, but I don't know if many people know about these laws, or even the understanding behind them.

Good luck with your puppy - please continue to let us know how he is doing. I hope your vet can work with you to sort it out. If you have a way to check with littermates I would try and see if they are having the same issues. Thanks for sharing with us - it is always a good place to support each other and learn.
What did the vet say about Finnegan? Or is he ok now?
The vet said Finney is fine. She gave him an oral dose of either Strongnat or Strongut (I can't read the chart and my husband took him) for worms in his stool. She also found a flea on him :( I guess this is the time for fleas and apparently my back yard is hoppin'. She said that the soft stool was most likely the result of first getting used to solid food, then having that food be systematically switched to Iams. The breeder lives out in the country and bought a store brand puppy chow that we couldn't find and weren't willing to drive 1.5 hrs to get. He's got all of his appointments scheduled until October, so yay.
Hubby said that everyone in the vet's office was gushing about Finnegan and how cute he was. I guess they've only ever had 2 other sheepies in the office, both owned by the same person.
Othwerwise, we've taken to calling him Jack-Jack, because you never know what's going to happen minute by minute, but I think that's a topic best discussed in another forum.

Thanks for caring. :)
So glad to hear that he is doing well! Phew, with all the talk about parvo on the other thread you always think the worst.
Keep up the good work guys!
Yay for Finney!!! I found a flea on Panda a month or so ago and freaked out....as soon as Fin is old enough, Id start him on Frontline....It works wonderfully!
I'm so glad it was a favorable diagnosis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably Strongid.

Glad to hear the wee one is feeling better. He's a whole lot of cuteness!
Glad to hear he's feeling better! :)

Already waking you up to go out, now that is a smart puppy!
