Swimming sensitivity

I don't know what else to name this thread, because I have no idea. Anyway, here goes: I took Walter swimming a few times over the last two weeks. The first time, he was a bit nervous (there's steps he had to go down into Lake Erie - big and scary) but once he got in, I've never seen him happier. He was jumping through the waves like a rabbit...too cute! Anyway, the Lake where we were goes from about 6 in to 2 feet and there are several sandbars, etc. So Walter was fine in the shallow area and actually did ok figuring out how to paddle through the deep to the next sandbar.

One time though, he appeared to be having a bit of difficulty, and might have gotten water in his nose or something. Well, I decided to help him, and put one hand gently on his tummy to push him along and lift his head out of the water...apparently a bad idea.

Walter growled and snapped. Nothing severe, but that type of snarl/snap that says "back off." He did the same thing to my brother who went to pat his back after retrieving a frisbee for him.

So I guess I'm just trying to figure out what could be making him sensitive like this. He's normally very receptive to touch, almost everywhere.

I thought he might have had a burr or sliver or something that I might have touched. Would the cold water make his skin physically more sensitive? Is there something about the new experience of the water that is making him emotionally nervous?

Walter seems to love the water, and I love being in with him, so I want to be able to continue safely and not risk and injuries.

(Sorry for the rant - I have trouble getting to the point without a lot of back story)

Could he tell it was your hand underneath him? He may have just gotten scared when something touched him that he couldn't see and it freaked him out, just like when something weird brushes against your own foot! Did it happen more than once?
