Right now, we're looking at Windsor Court which seems to have decent reviews. I don't like the cost though - lol I'm cheap about stuff like this - I mean it's just a place to sleep and shower for two nights. Besides the cost, it seems the most recent reviews haven't been that great. Oh, we booked a table at Emerils too...yum! I'm SO ready for that weekend. We haven't been away with just the two of us in a few years. Ideally, it wouldn't be to a football game, lol, but he loves them and it is his birthday. Besides, we're staying an extra day so we can do some things that we'd both enjoy. |

Nice gift Gail-have a fun weekend !
Let us know about Emerils--would love to try one of his restaurants. |
I would tell you about the hotels but all I can advise you is to make double sure you have reservations since most of the hotels down there are still full of workers, contractors, and government people.
Right now I am not sure which hotels are back up and running. |
Thanks Zahra. This will be his first time to ever see them (or any NFL game) so he's excited. I don't understand the first thing about football, so I think I'll take a book for me just in case... lol I'll definitely put up a review of Emerils.
Thanks BRSheepies. That's what I'm afraid of too. We're considering staying at Keesler AFB since it's only a hour away, but I'm afraid to count on that as retirees get first priority and even with reservations, we can get bumped out of our room. From calling places in NO, it seems like most of the hotels around that area anyway are open for the most part. There's still a few that's not. Is pretty much anywhere around that vicinity safe? I haven't been to NO is years, since I was a little girl. Other than when Jason was helping out during Katrina, he hasn't been since high school (10 yrs ago), so we're not really sure where the safer areas of town are now. |
If you stick to the normal tourist spots Jackson Square, Cafe Du Monde, the French Quarter - you are going to be ok. That is where the police heavily patrol. The National Guard is patrolling the areas that keep getting hit by looters and the "projects" area.
Make sure you have a couple cans of fix-a-flat in your car. With all the debris removal and the demolition of houses and the trucks hauling that debris around, there are a lot of nails, screws, etc... on the streets. A lot of flats in and around in that area. (I am down there in Orleans & Jefferson Parish quite a bit for work - so far 2 flats.) If you stick to the normal tourist areas you will be fine and have a great time. City mgmt and the mayor are making a concentrated effort to try to keep those areas safe and clean as they are trying to build the tourist industry back up. I can go ahead and send you a care box of Mardi Gras beads - so you don't waste your money on those in NOLA and you won't have to flash. Oh and if anyone else on the forum wants a box - let me know. I have about 300 lbs of them in boxes in the guest room closet. |
we stayed at the hotel provencal in the French Quarter about 2 years ago and loved it. One of those boutique hotels. |

My wife got a set of beads that are all little fruits, little bananas, little oranges, a very desirable set of beads, I'm told. She got them at a convention, too. Hmmmmm. Oh wait, I was there. |
may i suggest one that is above sea level? |
Ron,
Didn't pay for them and didn't flash. Several of our best friends are members of different krewes. When we go to see them in the parade they do what is called bombing. Which means they throw us sacks and sacks of beads and give us inidividual specialty beads. We also attend a couple of mardi gras balls every year as well. Last year my husband and his friends rode in a parade here in Baton Rouge. It was pouring and there weren't many spectators. When the floats would get to where me, my son, and my sister were - They simply handed us boxes and boxes of beads. Most will get recycled for throws for my husband & his friends riding in parades. But we have plenty to share so if anyone is having a Mardi Gras party .... The one pair of beads I have yet to find are the ones with sheepdogs. |

We've always stayed at Le Richelieu hotel near the French Market - 1234 Chartres Street, between Gov. Nicholls and Barracks Streets. It's open again and according to the online guest book is just as good as ever. Not the fanciest hotel in the Quarter but clean room, great staff and lots of ambiance. However, it's on the far side of the Quarter from the Superdome so it would be a long walk.
Wynette, I just might take you up on the throws! I used to have a Mardi Gras party every year when I lived in Chicago, and I think I've finally built up a big enough list of friends here in AZ to start the party up again |
