What color did you go with?????????? What edge profile???? Do tell.................. |
You very lucky, very rich (soon to be poorer) woman!!! Photos required OF COURSE |
That is wonderful!!!! |
Cool |
That's wonderful! I can't wait to see what you picked out. |
That's great Can't wait to see a picture of your new bench tops.
We are not moving, chickened out!!. Our new Kitchen appliances come tomorrow, once installed then new bench tops, sooo would be nice to see yours as to ideas for me. Oooooh I love shopping at the moment |
Congratulations! What kind of countertops do you have now? Can't wait to see pics. How long will it take?
Lisaoes, what kind of appliances did you get? I'm just curious what's normal for your country. I'm just catching up with the forum so if you've already posted hopefully, I'll find it. |
Yeah! It is alway so exciting to remodel in some way.
I love granite. |
Granite is nice and cool you know - wink wink |
Does that mean the dogs are going to start laying on the counters? |
Dogs ??? |
Did you notice it was the kitchen designer who asked about edge profile??
Of course we want pictures when finished! |
I love that lisa calls it a bench top...lol....as mandy refered to the dogs sitting on them....
Why do you call it a bench top instead of a counter top? and Susan, the edge profile is probably THE most important part of the ct! It sets everything else off and ties the whole room together........ |
Well!
We are going for basic round edge. Our kitchen is small and I felt like if there was any real detailing on the edges it might be too much. So, they'll just be rounded. Of course I'll post pictures! We are getting Butterfly Brown, but it doesn't look brown at all, at least to me. It is a nice, dark grey color, with bigger than not splotches in it (I'm sure Darcy knows the real term for that). Then, for the backsplash I'll be putting in those white ceramic bricks. I think it'll be a nice, clean contrast with the dark granite, plus tie in with our white cabinets and new white cermic sink! (And go with our yellow walls) Oh, to answer someone's question...our current counters are white laminate stuff. They pick up any stain and they are bending and just yucky! |
I love butterfly brown!!!! That will look fantastic with your yellow walls! The bullnose edge is nice too, clean looking! I love love love subway tile, thats what Im eventually going to do in mine too....gloss white...steph, Id try to make sure when they do the tile to do minimum grout line...1/8 or less...butt seam it....it will look more authentic...Im going for a stained apple green with copper patina glazed concrete, if and when I ever get the okay...... |
I can find butterfly green and blue, but not brown. Still the warm color sounds delightful! I look at sample and can't make up my mind.......most of it is so beatiful.
I understand edges Darcy.........that's another problem with me making a decision....which edge. So nothing gets done. |
Nothing wrong with a nice square edge... lots cheaper, too. |
The square edge is nice...I am going to do that myself, but I do really love the double ogee edge...it is so pretty. But it is really formal.....I live in a 1944 cottage...so it has to be simple...I am doing the subway tile too....I think it will look great with my old stove! |
Quote: I think it will look great with my old stove!
Our house is a late-teens, maybe 1920, brick two-story. Much of the kitchen is original, except where the previous owner butchered the counter tops and put in a useless island with a bar sink. no "flow" at all! I have always wanted one of those old-looking, modern-working stoves. Where is a good place to locate them? I love the Victorian wrought iron look. Darcy, is this up your alley? |
I just was at a store that sold new "old looking" Okeefe and Merrit stoves.....I have heard that they are NOT as good as the originals....my stove is a 1944 chambers range and it works fantastic....the only drawback to these old stoves is that the ovens tend to be very small. I dont mind because I dont use the oven for large entertaining anyway. If you want a real old stove, Id go to someone who refurbishes and sells them. They can tell you all of the good/bad news of each stove....we did a lot of research before we actually purchased it...
My original want was a 36'' wolf range, but it wouldnt fit thru any of our doorways without ripping out the frame work....old houses have narrow doorways , so I ''settled" for this beautiful working piece of art....It actually scares a lot of people that to light the oven I have to stick a long match down the pilot hole.....lol |
oh heck I have to relight my "new" 1979 gas range too. it blows out. |
Hey, this place is cool!
http://www.classicranges.com/index.html Most are 40's and 50's but some cool earlier ones, as well. |

Why do you call it a bench top instead of a counter top? Must be an Aussie expression for counters, Kitchen Bench Top Also Darcy can you answer a question for me, we just want to change the colour of the COUNTER tops LOL, do they just replace over what is already there or do they have to do whole new counter tops (Bench tops ) Haven't got that far yet, new stove, range hood, fridge, dishwasher and microwave coming this afternoon. Waiting till all that is installed before the next step. Then off on another spending spree, new curtains, am having fun at the moment, beats moving and having to rush there with packing and tydying out years of Junk Can do that in my own time now, maybe another few years to sort that instead of a week. We were ready to sign to put the house on the market, that is why I chickened out, tooo overwhelming . All stainless steel so should be a nice change from the old white stuff. |
Lisa, what type of 'bench' counters do you have? They told us that if we had nice, square edges on our counters that they could just place the new counters over (of course we do NOT have square edges, so it all has to come off!). We also have smooth laminate counters, so they said that anything new would adhere well to those. I'm sure Darcy, Princess of Kitchen design will have more answers and advice for you!
Okay...So here's a mock up of what my new kitchen will look like. Although the counters won't be that dark...the other paint option on my computer program was too light, so this captured it more, but the granite would be more of a medium grey color. Please let me know what you think. My husband does NOT like the white tile backsplash... |
We have the square edges, so am hoping not to replace the whole bench tops just overlay hopefully . Delightful red at the moment, very 70's, so just want a colour change. Also we have a galley type Kitchen and under a Mezzanine floor for the ceiling of the Kitchen so always quite dark in there, so a lighter colour for the bench tops.
I love the way yours looks, not sure about the white tiled splash back, maybe just a smidge darker into a creamier tone to blend in a bit more, the other thing with white tiles and grout it shows every splatter/mark from the sink and washing up. We have to have a splashback put in above the stove to the range hood as behind that is a brick wall. So, thinking along the lines of a stainless steel splash back for the upright stainless steel "Blanco" stove and range hood. Also have to have a cupboard removed to fit the new stove, no problems loosing a cupboard as we have tons of cupboards in the long galley kitchen Look forward to seeing your new counter (bench ) tops, the colour sounds fabulous and might be a colour for me to look at down the track. So pictures PLEASE!! to give me ideas when you have them installed Everything arrived today WOO HOO, fridge is in, microwave is in, just waiting for a quote tomorrow for installation of the stove, range hood and dishwasher. So hopefully in by next week, sooooo then the bench tops to look at for colour and what compliments all the stainless steel appliances. Ooooh love my new fridge, has a wine quick chill part in it, mmmm must be made just for me, CHEERS PS do I see Barney Snuffing around the kitchen checking out everything and where is that place you keep the yummy food????????????? My girls were absolutely soooo funny today checking out the new fridge and wondering if that is where yummy things live Now . |
Ha ha! Yep, Lisa...that's Barney snuffing around the kitchen...tends to be his usual pose while in the kitchen, always hoping to find something on the ground!
I think your project sounds fun! And it is always fun to have new appliances. |
Lisa, there is a product that you can put over existing tops, I cant remember the name of it....I think its called granitex..or something like that....they do have a website, but of course without the name, its not much help..
We strickly only put new tops in, so I wont be much help...and Im not sure how much you will save by installing over previous tops....Im sure it will be like refacing vs new cabs....what you pay for new cabs, you end up paying for in labor for refacing.... No matter which way you choose, it will be a mess, but will look fantastic when done Steph, I love the white subway tile, it will add charm and tone down the harshness that granite can sometimes bring...Im sure once its in Cam will love it....Brian doesnt want it either, but I know he will end up loving it.....they just have to learn to trust our design instincts..(and believe that the millions of pictures that we rip out of magazines) is in good taste! |
