Bag Balm on paws??? Help!

Hi everyone! Newbie sheepie owner here and I need help! (And I'm sure this will be the first of many requests... :) I've been reading this forum for quite some time, preparing for the newest member of our family. We picked her up on Saturday. She's a one year old with impeccable manners and we just LOVE her.

My question is this: can I use bag balm on her paws? She grew up in the country and is not used to pavement. We've been walking her up to the park at least twice a day so she can run around in the grass. However, I've noticed that she's developing some small cracks in the pads on her front paws. I'm assuming she's not used to the pavement and would like to do something before it gets worse. If not bag balm, any other suggestions? I would really appreciate it!

I do believe some pet supply places carry a type of wax made especially for dog paws....

Welcome to the forum! :)

Is her name Pooh?
Thanks!!! I'll have to look when I go shopping tomorrow. Think Petsmart would have something?

Actually, Pooh is our 11 year old Lhasa, and I've been known as Poohs_Mom for so long that I decided to stick with it (my name on Petster, too!). Her name is Tia (actually, English Tea Tyme) and she's the sweetest thing. I'm trying to upolad a pic, but the file is too large so I'll have to adjust it.
Petsmart definitely carries the Paw Wax - that's where I buy it for our sheepies.

And a big welcome to the forum from Louisiana!
Paw wax is the way to protect her pads. Here is a link of one particular brand, there is a few brands on the market, but explains what it does for there paws. Not expensive either.

Best wishes with your new sheepie and looking forward to hearing about your new sheepie girl. Oh and pictures too
Bag balm is good if her paws are already irritated. It has an antiseptic type quality. Good stuff. Looking forward to some pictures!!
I have paw wax for all of mine and I also have this I use this stuff called Musher's Secret (I know you can order it through JB pet), which is great. In the winter, it protects from ice and salt and also prevents snowballs from forming in between the toes. In the summer, it protects from hot pavement and the abrasion of concrete. It's organic and goes on pretty clean-- a big plus since you don't want it all over your floor!
I started using paw wax on Pandas paws and have noticed a difference in softness, however, it hasnt helped with her slipping on the wood floors, which was the original reason for buying it.........

maybe I wash the floors too often??? 8O
Welcome Pooh and Tia's Mom! How exciting for you to get a sheepie! I'm so looking forward to pictures of all of you and hearing wonderful stories and antics!

Yes, Darce. With the way you keep house, I'm sure you wash the floor too often!!!
Have been a Bag Balm fan for many years and have used it on all pets (horses, dogs, cats) for many years, besides using it on family members for chapped skin. and would certainly recommend it.

More likely you are putting too much on. I found that I only need the tiniest bit spread very thin to help with traction. Too much and the moisturizing effect will make paws soft and slippery.
I like the Bag Balm too... I shave Darby's foot fuzz real short between her pads. She has allergies to molds and is receiving shots but when it's wet outdoors she will sometimes start chewing her feet. So I wash them off and apply the Bag Balm between the pads before bed so she's not tracking it all over the house. It kinda acts like a barrier.
Thank you everyone for your advice and friendly welcome! Knowing that this forum is a big reassurance, and helped make the decision to take on the responsibility of an OES.

Tia will be getting Paw Wax today. She loves to hike in the ski hills, but there's a lot of rock / gravel trails that she loves to run, and I don't think they're helping her feet!
I love Bag Balm (not the name as much)- have the green can on my nightstand- never thought to try it on Chippers feet- but will!
:)
I love the name English Tea Thyme - very elegant!
Oops I didn't mean to reply to the spam column! I guess I replied to the wrong reply column, but my Bear dog has been in pain from a split in his back paw and looks forward to me rubbing some Bag Balm on this several times a day.

Funny! I was rather to surprised to see my very innocuous post reported as spam. Even funnier is that I don't even remember writing about bag balm. Maggie really could have used some this summer when she scraped up her pads on the driveway pavement. :bulb:
