I know the higher the number the closer the cut... at least I THINK I know? So I'm looking at the #3 blade here (I think it's mismarked as 30 at the top)- http://www.osterpro.com/productDetails.asp?ProductID=26 Will this blade actually leave the hair 1/2" long? If so, will using just this blade allow for a faster cut compared to using a #10 blade with 1/2" comb attachment? Will I get the "hot knife through butter" type of clipping? Also, what kind of results do you get with a skip tooth blade? I guess I'm wondering what blade or blades to use that will leave 1/2" of hair for their late summer haircut. Any suggestions or recommendations? |

I use a #5 most of the time. Which is 1/4 inch...
The #3 will give you 1/2 inch cut without a comb. What is says is what you get. If that's the length you are looking for then a #3 would work great for you. Without the attachments the blade cuts like butter, I do not use attachment blades because I believe they slow down the process. The skip tooth is for the initial cutting...not for a finished look. It helps cut through matts. If you used a skip tooth you would need to also get a regular blade for finishing. With my dogs not be matted I use a regular blade all the time. If they are matted I will use a #10 to get under the matts. I have never used a skip tooth. If you go to this site http://www.andis.com/USA/bladesAndMore/rightBlade.asp They tell you what # blade gives what lengths. Or you can input the length and it tells you what blade to use. |
Also those Andis blades are interchangable with the Oster A 5.
I have the Andis and can use Oster A5 blades on it. So it goes both ways. |
Hate to same "me too" but usually I use a #10 if I want short whole body or just short legs. (I have used #15 but it really is much too close and sunburn becomes a big problem.) The #5 is as long as I've left it since I always run into a mat somewhere. Next blade order I'd like to get a #3 just to see how it goes. I found the attachements were a PITA!!! I use them when cutting husband's hair, but then there are no mats and less dense each year No, I don't use the dog clipper........but.......hmmmm there's a thought.

susan LMAO I used a pair of human clipper on the dogs...then used it on Ryan. |
I've been tempted, but usually for a sheepie-butt trim.......wouldn't DH be thrilled to know where his hair clipper had previously been?

You think???? |
Thanks so much Elissa! I'll check out the link you provided. I might try another Andis clipper sometime too. I really loved the first one I had but hated the second.

The only blade I now own is a #10. I had another one (never used it, can't remember what number it was either ) but thought it could only be used with the Andis clippers so I shipped it out with the Andis clipper I had Dang, dang, dang. Thanks for all the info... now I can go shopping for a new blade and hopefully cut down on the clipping time |
Good luck, Jaci!
You're way ahead of me!! I am still in the novice catagory with clipping. I've practiced on my brother's springer spaniel and my sister's shih tzu and quite a few OES. Still have never figured out how to get my #4 blade to work. Shuffles (Pam) has offered me a lesson (she's a retired pro-groomer). I am going to take her up on it this fall. |

You LUCKY girl... I hope to some day find someone to teach me. I'm a novice too but it doesn't stop me from doing it. They may not be beauty queens but they don't get too many mats. |
I know a lot of us are entering the "clipping" time again and I was doing some research on blade lengths/hair lengths and my internet search brought me right back here to this thread. I found the link that Elissa provided to Andis above really helpful in understanding what hair length that you get with each blade.
http://www.andis.com/USA/bladesAndMore/rightBlade.asp Just thought I'd bump it up in case someone else was confused like me. |
I use a 3-3/4 finish blade most of the time. It leave 3/4" of hair & within about 2 months or less they grow into the cutest "puppy cut". To use the 3-3/4 blade the dog does need to be mat free. It won't go thru mats. If I happen to hit an unexpected mat I use a 7 blade to get thru that area as it will go under the mat. I save the 10 blade for in between the pads of the feet & private areas. My mentor taught me to brush them out, shave with the 3-3/4 blade, bathe, dry & go over again with the 3-3/4 blade. Gives a nice finish that looks like velveteen. |
If I use #10 blade, what size comb would give me same effect as using a #3 blade? I'm trying to use what I already have for new poodle I just adopted. I don't want hair short as he's older and skin shows thru when short. 1/2" will be good. Thanks! Penny |
