Not peeing...should I worry?

Okay...so I told you earlier this week that Barney has been reluctant to go outside. But, once outside, he's been fine and done his business in the usual manner (nothing odd, nothing too short, or too long or anything like that). It was very rainy earlier this week and he went out fine for about a day after the rain, so I chalked it up to the weather.

It is now 4th of July weekend, so chances of finding a non emergency vet open in the next few days is probably slim.

Barney hasn't gone pee since last night (it is now 9:30 pm). He has eaten his breakfast and dinner fine with the usual vigor and has consumed the usual amount of water, but he won't pee (or poop). His usual regime is monring breakfast/pee...then after work/dinner pee...then last call pee (and sometimes one in between, depending on the activities).

Should I worry? When should I worry? He seems fine in all aspects except this...I'm so concerned!

If there's no sign of distress, I wouldn't be calling the emergency vets just yet. Dogs who aren't getting much exercise may only defecate every two to three days.

First, feel there are no obstructions at the poop end......dried dingles for example. Also get an old clean rag and wash out in warm water and then wipe off the penis....who knows, maybe the warm wet rag will remind him what he needs to do. Is there anyplace he can walk on paving and not get his feet wet? Will he react to a treat? Anything to get him outside again.........are there fireworks that are frightening him? My guys won't leave the house July 4th and sometimes another half day.

Since he hasn't pooped for awhile, he may get a bit constipated, will he drink diluted broth? Extra liquids should help with any problems.

Don't panic yet, bladder stones symptoms are not what he's showing. Prostate problems might be a concern since a swollen prostate can extend back into the rectum, but he would be an unhappy camper.

I wonder if he's just being stubborn.
I'd grab my rain coat right now, along with his leash, and take him for a nice long walk... in the rain! I really don't think not peeing since last night is a problem but you should find out if he can/can't. The inability to pass urine can indicate an obstruction (stones possibly) which is very serious. Is it possible you just missed seeing him go? A good long walk will usually encourage a dog to relieve himself/herself. If he still hasn't peed I'd get on the phone with whatever vet is on call to see what to do.

If he pees, you may simply need to escort him outside each time it's time to potty so he understands there is no choice in the matter. Make it pleasant with a treat but offer no options. He may get to feel that since he's outside already he may as well do his business. :?
This is odd but it must have somethnig to do with the rain. Foz typically goes outside a million times to pee. During the past 2 days, he hesitates to go in the backyard and then if we go out there with him, he lays down on the patio. I'm kind of getting excited because maybe his bladder is finally large enough for him to hold it longer :D Just looking on the bright side here.
Has Barney peed yet?
Yep, he peed and pooped this morning, all by himself! He had his breakfast and I opened the door and said wanna go outside, and he said, "yes, thank you, I do" and off he went.

I think it's a stubborn thing mostly, but it just concerned me. And just when I had it all chalked up to rain, which stopped several days ago and he went on the day after it stopped raining, he didn't go again.

Anyways, he has done his business so I'm a happy camper...I'll let you know if he continues to persist in this
I am so happy to hear that he finally went.
When I lived in NY my dogs were so stubborn about going out in the rain.
For some reason they preferred to pee in the front yard when it was raining. I have no idea what the difference was to them. It was raining out front too
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Panda says its about time....ie....it's the girl thats supposed to get her way.......but she LOOOOOVVVVEEESSS Barney!
Brie does the same thing, wet weather forget it 8O I use to worry too as to how long she has held on

Well winter here, wet, cold and back to the same thing, I'll hold on till the ground is dry mom. She goes outside looks at the wet ground, turns around and heads back inside, even with me standing there yelling go twinkle, mmmm wonder what the neighbours think of the crazy lady next door

Sooo here's hoping with barney too that the weather drys a bit so they are back to there normal routine for pottys, I gave up worrying about it as eventually it has to flow!!! :P
