Tartar control

Mojo was at the vets yesterday because he has been sick. They have started giving a print out of your visit (why you came in, what they evaluated, recomendations...) I was looking it over this morning and it listed slight tartar under the oral exam. The vet didn't mention it at the time, we were more concerned about him not eating and throwing up. So I haven't talked to him about what to use when he feel better to get rid of it.
I don't like to use products with preservatives, dyes or by-products.
Any recomendations?

I give my dogs a lot of Milkbones (probably more than I should) and about once a month, I pick up those Pedigree Dentabones and/or Dentasticks. Lucy just had her teeth cleaned for the second time in her life at the vet's office (she's about 11 now and the first time was about 6 years ago). For her age, she has awesome teeth, only tartar, no bad teeth and she actually only eats canned food- no dry. When I asked the vet about preventative stuff for the boys, she mentioned the thing you put on your finger, similar to the human Brushups. I can't remember the name of it off hand thugh.
I give Daisy marrow bones almost daily. I get them at the grocery store (the only ones I've been able to find lately are frozen, but in this heat I keep them frozen and give her to them to her frozen). If there is a butcher near you, you could probably get them cheaper

This keeps her teeth clean and gives her a treat at the same time and I don't worry about it
My crew love Raw Beef Rib bones, Cow's feet, and Marrow bones.
They have excellent teeth! They only get a few raw bones a month.
They also have absolutely no smell to their breaths. 8)

I insist the bones must be eaten outside!! They are gross and messy.
I usually will freeze the meat first then thaw it out a little and give it to them.
