Ouch! What should I do?

This morning, I stubbed my toe on the edge of the cabinet. My nails aren't very long but somehow I managed to tear the nail of my big toe about halfway off the nail bed. :x I've already hit it twice and dropped something on it once - what a clutz! I put Neosporin between the nail and the nail bed but that just really hurt so I rinsed it out. Any ideas I am going on vacation in a few days and want to be able to walk without pain!

Put a band aid on it very tight. It is the air that makes it hurt worse. Good luck, sorry you hurt yourself. I hate that when it happens!

Youch!! Sorry no suggestions here. I currently have a black toe nail from a piece of concrete that fell on my foot a month ago. I am sure I will loose my nail soon.
Feel Better :)
I bet that hurt big time! At least my toenail is intact. It doesn't look like anything is wrong with my toe at all but it sure hurts! I don't know if I will lose the nail or not. Maybe it will reattach itself underneath. I sure hope so, I'm planning on doing a lot of walking on my vacation!
Wrap it up tight with medical tape if you have it and try to keep it there for a couple of days so you can get a good scab forming. I did the same thing to my fingernail a few weeks ago. After almost a month, it's almost reaching my fingertip. I keep my nails trimmed simply because I constantly rip them and I still manage to have accidents like that!
Can you cut the torn part of the nail off?

ICE, will reduce the inflamation. If it shows any signs of infection you should see the Doctor. He can remove the toenail which may actually speed the healing.
Thanks for the tips- I'll bandage it up before I go to bed tonight. In the meantime, I'll put ice on it. I didn't even think of that - duh  . I can't clip the nail as it is completely intact but torn away from the nail bed under it about half way down. That would expose the open "meat" not to mention hurt like a *&%#@! to do that. Right now it barely even hurts at all :D !
Ouch. I've done that before. Hope it feels better soon!
Yuck... that's all I can think of to type, just the thought of it creeps me out.
Hope it heals fast....

:twitch:
I did the same thing several years ago. I taped it down good and it healed up well. Keep the nail as short as possible to minimize the chance of it getting pulled loose again during healing time. Good luck - I feel your pain!
Owwwww I feel your pain!

Good suggestions as mentioned above and perhaps get yourself some open toed shoes so there is no pressure bearing down on the injured toe. You can have it wrapped up tight with extra gauze to cushion it should you accidently bump into anything, wearing that type of shoe.

Good luck!

I don't think the nail will reattach itself. If it is completely loose from the nail bed and still remains very sore you may need to have it removed. Actually I think that having a loose nail rubbing against thenailbed might be more painful than having it off. I am also worried about infection if water and stuff getus under the nail.
I did that once and ended up having the whole nail removed :( Good luck, I know how painful it isl
I'm speaking as a beauty therapist here:

oooh nasty - I can tell you though that your nail will not attach itself. The best thing you can do when possible is let the air get to it, it needs to dry out, but when you're doing your day to day stuff, just keep a plaster on it so as not to knock it. It takes 6 months for a full nail to grow back.

Try and clip back the loose nail as much as you can, as you need that off - but within what feels comfortable for you. you could treat your nail bed with tea tree oil to help it heal.
OUCH!!

Is it any better today?
I cant reply with any advice, every time I read it, I get goosebumps and the heebies.....Im sorry though hope it feels better!!!
Actually, it feels much better today. In fact, the only time it hurt was when Truman stepped on it! He didn't mean to so I forgave him! Believe it or not, the nail seems to be "stuck" back down on the nail bed. However, I don't know if it will make it as it has turned a strange white (the nail) color and it looks like it might be kinda blue underneath the nail. I can't believe I'm such a clutz - several years ago, I broke my ankle in two places by stepping off a 3" step. Now it's full of plates, pins and screws. Strangely enough, that didn't hurt when it happened. 8O
Glad it's feeling better.

We used to have the same ball-toy as in your avatar picture. Tater our black lab loved it. I forgot about that toy until I saw your picture - I'll have to get another one. Do you remember where you got it?
lol...this was the same ball but panda managed to get the rope thingy off...now its just a soccer ball that she kicks around.

Yeah, Truman's is now a soccer ball too. He somehow got the rope out but he had it for quite a while before doing that. I believe I got it at Petco. He still grabs it by the strap and runs around the yard with a "na na na na na " you can't catch me look on his face!
Thanks, I'll look there when I go up to Petco later this month. Tater got his rope and straps off eventually, and played with it until he popped the ball. It lasted longer than I thought it would.
