Stitches remain yrs after spaying

My bitch was spayed 3 years ago and I can feel lumps under the skin of her tummy. I'm sure it's the stitches but my vet dismisses my concern. What should I do?

That doesn't seem right. I might suggest you try a new vet.
What did HE think that they were?
Doesn't scar tissue sometimes form around the sutures used? I think they use the dissolving type for the internal sutures and they can take months to dissolve. Could it be scar tissue you're feeling?

He just said not to worry about it.

That sound pretty reasonable actually
I would have asked for an explaination! Panda had some sutures that didnt disolve (some of which were still under the skin) and I brought her in and the just plucked them out..no problem, no charge....

Maybe I should go to a different vet...
Any good doctor whether for person or for animal, should be willing to keep you totally informed!
It is probably scar tissue, but if you're not comfortable with your vet definitely get a second opinion.
Welcome to the forum :)
If you've been happy with the care you've gotten from this vet up 'til now, you might just pick up the phone and tell him/her you are concerned... that you need to know why the lumps are there and what they are for your own peace of mind. If you're still in doubt, seek another vet.
my dog Bitza was spayed 7yrs before she passed and we could still feel the stitchs under her skin some vets here dont use disolving stitchs.
I have a human story - one of my BIL's had surgery in Korea about 23 yrs ago. He was stationed there while in the army. He had peritonitis and almost died - they had to do emergency surgery. They did not use dissolvable stitches on the inside layers. He has had stitches working their way out ever since, and can feel others under the skin. His doctors here said they are fine. It would be more harmful to go in and replace/remove them.
Something like this may be the same for your dog. It still would have been nice if they would have offered a more complete explanation though!
Paige had a mammory removed at the same time as her spay......10 years ago. I wasn't real good at watching her and she licked and nibbled her stitches. So when it came time to remove the stitches they were all swollen and red. The swelling has never gone away, in fact one area under the mammory removal got bigger. To this day I can feel little lumps down her belly from the spay and a giant orange size mass hanging down under the mammory. For awhile I could pull sutures from the lumps and bumps the vet couldn't get to due to the swelling.

The vet and I keep an eye on the big mass least it becomes inflamed (which happens from time to time from laying on stubble outside), but there's been no other problem. So follow the vet's advice, you've got scar tissue there and it probably won't cause a problem.

Good thing this is a long haired dog.

(and that's why they tell you to keep you dogs from worrying their stitches)

Thank you so much for all your suggestions! This is the first time I've been to a pet-oriented forum... I should've come a long time ago! I found many helpful suggestions and kind people. You guys are great! :D

I think I will get another vet's opinion, and if nothing comes of it I suppose I'll just have to deal with a few little lumps
