How Long does it take to get a puppy?

My husband and I have finally decided after doing a lot of research and reading that we want a get a oes puppy. So now I've been reading the training books and buying things i will need when we get one. I've just sent off two emails to breeders in AZ enquiring about it. (Haven't heard back yet but i only sent them off today.) I am so excited but I am wondering how long everyone usually has to wait. Is it months? Years?

I've gotten my dogs from rescue, so I can't tell you about breeder wait times. The may be waiting lists and of course the have to wait for nature to take it's course too. :D Many of the members here have gotten their dogs from reputable breeders (Have you checked out your breeder(s) with the OESCA Breeder Referal Site or Chairperson?) so they can be of more help there.

As you know, an OES is a very energetic dog, and puppyhood tends to last fully through 2 years. The dog we have now, Mulligan, has really calmed down a lot in the last year, he's 3 1/2 now. We got him just shy of his second birthday. He was a wildman, and still had trouble controlling his bladder when excited.

Of course you know all of this because you've done your research! However I wanted to share for other who may read this later on. Also, I just wanted to hop in and say welcome to the forum! So....

Welcome to the forum!
Yup the two contacts I emailed to were from the OESCA Breeder Referal list. I got that from Tarja. It was frustrating at fist because we weren't sure where to go and I had come across some breeders who weren't good. Thanks for the info. Already knew it. LOL! I ordered a book on the the OES breed and when my husband asked if I had learned anything new about them I said no. :( I had already learned about everything in it aready from everything on this forum and lots of other places on the web and books. Thanks for the welcome.

OH I AM JUST SO EXCITED!!!! I can hardly wait!! My stomach is in knots and i don't even have a dog yet.

Lol. You sound like me. I still buy every book I see and Clyde's 1/2 now! And, I got so excited on the way to pick Clyde up, I threw up on the way. 8O
oh my gosh, the wait seemed forever when we were waiting for tecumseh!

We were actually supposed to get one from the litter before his(different set of parents), but she only had 4 puppies and we were 6th on the list lol

thank heaven for small miracles because I cant imagine anyone but tuc for us!
Welcome to the forum, crustybirds! The wait time typically depends on supply/demand. I might suggest that you place a phone call in addition to your emails. It's nice for the breeder to know that you are really interested and can take the opportunity to get to know you and vice versa. Good luck! Keep us informed!
Hi Crustybirds.

The breeders on the OESCA referral list are generally those that either have a litter on the way, or have one currently.

Generally speaking you would have to wait for the litter to be born, and then around 8-9 weeks for the puppies to be old enough to come home :)

Please do contact Tarja for a breeder referral list in your area! Read through some of the getting a puppy topics to learn about what to look for in an ethical breeder :)
If they have a litter that is not spoken for, the wait as mentioned is min 8 weeks.

If the dog is pregnant, the wait is 2 months for pregnancy, 2 months for them to go.

If the dog has not been bred then the wait is up to 8 mths(approx some earlier some later) for heat cycle, 2 mths pregnant, 2 mths for them to leave.

Depending on how many dogs they have, and if they are currently planning a litter.

Your wait is anywhere from 0 days-1 yr....good luck. Let us know when you get one, and it never hurts to start shopping.
Once you decide on a breeder, the wait can depend on how often he/she has a litter, how many other people are waiting for puppies from them, the number of available show quality/pet quality puppies in the litter and if you have a specific wish list (male/female, temperment, etc).

You may find a breeder that has a litter on the way, may have puppy from a litter that hasn't been spoken for yet, may have an older puppy that they have decided not to keep for what ever reason, and your wait can be short. Or in our case, we waited almost 9 months after selecting the breeder, the parents and waiting for the litter to come.
Wow thanks for all the info! :) I was wondering if i was going to have to wait 12 years or something! One of the breeders i contacted just called. On the message she said that she still had one puppy left. I'm going to call her back later tonight. Who knows how it will go. It will probably be a girl and have a snow cap and we are looking for a boy with a dark splash on on side of his head. Im afriad that all the breeders will tell me no that I can't have one of their dogs because i don't live in the country. :(
Don't get too hooked up on markings! Keep yourself open to whatever puppy touches your heart! Especially remember that some markings will blend and change with time, so what looks like a spot as a baby, may just end up being mixed in with the rest of the fur later on :)
Good luck! :) Sometimes it's just a matter of the right dog at the right time :)
Another suggestion: If this puppy doesn't work out, really try calling the breeders. Sometimes this works better than e-mailing. GOOD LUCK!
