Our girl is at the Bridge and it is just too quiet and lonely in the house. I also work at home so I miss my lunch partner, my walking buddy, my ol' boss! (or so she thought!) I am looking for an OES -- but it's hard to find one in my area. I live in The Twin Cities, MN. I've checked into Rescue Groups, Petfinder, etc. There are no OES in our area and the ads say that they don't take out of state adoptions. We were interested in 'Charity' (OES) in MICH and 'Tasha & Bisquit' (OES and Springer!) that also have to stay in their area per the Petfinder ads. So I haven't even e-mailed about them ... Since we haven't had any luck with Rescue -- we are now considering an OES puppy! The problem is -- I DO NOT want to buy from a mill, broker, pet store, etc. Does anyone know of any REPUTABLE breeders? Thanks so much in advance! Grace |

OESCA ( www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org ) supposedly will provide you with a list of OESCA member breeders... at the minimum, they must adhere to a code of ethics.
This is a link to OESCA's Breeder Referral page New England Old English Sheepdog Rescue ( www.neoesr.org ) often helps in placements that are out of New England. You should go to their site and fill out an adoption request form. Adoption usually takes some amount of time -- our took 6 months, but was the perfect pooch for us. Good luck! |
Once, and only after, you get your referral from the OES club of America that Ron mentions, you can go to http://www.InfoDog.com and check the breeders out that were referred to you. It is my understanding that even though the OES club has their breeders sign a code of ethics contract they are not supervised by the club once they do. (Please don't quote me on this as I heard it by someone that raises champion Irish Setters.) We got a great referral from the OES club but it gave me peace of mind to check the breeder out on InfoDog which tells how many litters, champions, etc. that they have had. Plus InfoDog lists most of the dog shows in the country so it might make sense for you to talk to a breeder there too.
I know it's been mentioned on the forum before, just make sure you interview them and don't feel offended if they ask you questions about yourself and the environment that the pup will be raised in. Good luck and fortunately my puppy sleeps from time to time or I would never be able to get any work done. |
I also was looking for a puppy for a while. I live in NY and there are very few breeders in the area. I went on the internet and searched. I found a great breeder in a different state (FAR away). But she was experienced and sounded wonderful. She was asking us all sorts of questions about our lifestyle and if we had any experience with the breed. That made me feel better. She really cared about who adopts her babies! I will look for the site I found the breeder and will post it. Hope it will help. |
Grace,
How about Henry on petfinder.com? Any sheepie named Henry is near and dear to my heart. Chicago isn't that far from the Twin Cities?!? |
I saw Henry too!! He looks adorable in his puppy cut and it looks like he's been there a while since the pic was taken whilst there was snow left on the ground!
The only problem is that it says he needs a home without children. I have two kids (16 & 12) and my friends bring their littler kids over a lot -- I don't dare try to adopt Henry only to find he hates the kids ... that would be just asking for trouble for Henry. I am trying really hard to find the right fit for the dog/pup and for us. And it is SO hard to wait! Especially when there are so many cute faces on-line and I have this little voice in the back of my head that tells me I should take every one of them!! |
G/A has been talking about a sweet little girl, Chelsea I believe, who is supposedly great with children.
The exact page (without their navigation frame) is here: http://www.neoesr.org/doghome.htm Have you contacted NEOESR? NEOESR placed 80 sheepdogs in 2003. |
Thanks so much for your replies!
I have contacted NEOSR (recently put an application in) and also am in contact with a rescue contact in Wisconsin. There are no contacts in MN at that are active in the OESCA -- that I know of. (Been searching, haven't found anyone) OK - here's the real problem. PATIENCE. I have none. When I started looking for an OES I began by researching the OESCA. I didn't find a list of breeders there, but I found names of Ch OES's and their breeders/owners. Their phone numbers are usually not listed so I did more research to find these connections. I also called OES owners and asked for recommendations of good breeders. Through those two avenues -- I have found 4 reputable breeders in the tri-state area. I've interviewed and been interviewed to the enth degree! I feel like I am adopting a child! There are very strict guidelines that the breeders are looking for before placing one of their babies. (these breeders do not want their babies to be homeless in the future) Here's where the patience comes in! Out of four reputable breeders -- two are not breeding now. (Most don't breed very often) The other two are expecting puppies to be whelped in mid May. Then there's the 8 weeks (or so) until the puppies are able to be placed. Putting me into late July, early August for a new arrival! I'm praying for patience! I am looking for a pet quality OES as I have no desire to show my dog and simply want a family pet/member! I will go the rescue route or the reputable breeder route. I am in TOTAL support of Rescue! I am in TOTAL support of buying from a breeder who demands the very best for the dog they place and who will keep in contact with the buyer. There are too many homeless dogs and puppies who are the victims of mills, etc. NOT to go the aforementioned two routes. I have volunteered for a rescue (not OES) in our area for about 6 months and have seen first hand the beautiful dogs in desperate need of homes. (However, I am just stuck on an OES) Praying for patience, keeping my fingers (and toes) crossed that the right OES will want to share it's life with us! |
Marley, Did you ever find the site you got your baby from? I still haven't put a deposit down on a pup ... still searching ... there are so many out there ... but it would be good to know of someone who has had a GOOD experience. Cher gave me a name of her breeder and I think I was a day late. I guess good things come to those who wait ... but ... any help would be greatly appreciated! |
Grace,
Chicogoland OES Club has 2 OES that they are looking for a foster home for (they probably are looking for a permanent home - but need these two sprung from a shelter ASAP so fostering is the first step). They are about 2 yrs old (male & female). Being a geographical moron - I have no idea if you are near there. Maybe you could give them a call! (If anyone can help call either Grace Fujikawa at 847-446-7381 (Chicagoland OES Club Rescue) or Me at 262-553-1998) 2 are better than 1! Kristen |
Thanks so much, Brit! I'll call Grace! |
I just noticed on petfinder that they have a new young male OES up for adoption in MN. He is really cute.

I went at 11:00 when GVHS opened to see 'Bart'. He had already been adopted yesterday! Kind of bittersweet. I was glad he wasn't in the shelter, but I wanted him home with ME! There were some adorable puppies though -- 30 + who had been rescued from a mill! (boxer, bulldog & pug) My daughter is really working on me for one of those ... but I'm stuck on a Sheepie! Thanks for the heads up VerveUp! |
Grace,
I am sorry your didn't get Bart, he looks like a sweetie. I have been following your search with sympathetic impatience. I just know the right Sheepie will find you soon. Hang in there, your Sheepie is out there. |
Sorry! I just read your post HM! And you were SO right about the right Sheepie coming to me.
{{{{Thank you so much for your words of encouragement.}}} Maggy was definately worth the wait! |
I have an oes pup for sale. He is 7 months old. Please email
