lol, most sheepies don't like stairs, both that I have had took several months to learn how to manage stairs, and as far as I know a lot of others do the same thing. The main thing with stairs and any puppy, is that they are babies, and can fall, like any baby. A fall for a puppy may not result in immediate noticeable injury, but it may damage her hips. I put baby gates up for my girl, and teach her slowly on the porch steps (only 3). |
I don`t have stairs here at home...but I visit my hubby`s granny a lot and her house has a long flight of stairs...the first attempt were a bit hard on Pisco since they are wooden stairs but after a while he just races up and down with no problem....the funny part is when going up he does it bunny-way LOL two back legs at the same time....fun to see. |
Thanks so much for the quick replies! I have about a month a half to ask questions before we actually have the puppy at home. From all the funny things you wrote your babies do, I am so thrilled, I can hardly contain myself. Acting like a total kid. My husband laughs and goes to another room when i start telling him about all the funny and brave things your oes(s) do. It wondreful! THanks for the advice! I am addicted to this site! Running late for work! Look forward to more questions and answers! |
Pud doesn't seem to like stairs either. His first real experience with true stairs was at my office. The ones and two at home and at the lake don't seem to bother him, but the two full flights sure did. We got to the landing after the first flight and I had to convince him to go the rest of the way. The coming down wasn't any easier. |
Abbi must be an odd-ball OES. Abbi was 8 weeks old when we brought her home and nine weeks old when she learned to climb the stairs. She folowed the girls every where and we had lots of stairs (inside/outside, metal, wood, tile, brick ...). We still have lots of stairs. At first the girls would pick her up and carry after the firsrt several stairs, but by 3-4 months she was like a mountain goat.
She is 5 years old and has fallen down stairs muchos veces, but doesn't seemed any worse for the wear. Runs like the wind and walks like I haven't walked her in weeks. I found with the kids that the baby gates were more dangerous than helpful. Both my girls used to climb over them by the time they were 10 months old ... Abbi can jump over most of them with ease ...yet they surprisingly work for every one else? Abbi the wonder dog. She knows she's the youngest, but still tries to out-do them all. Thankfully she listens most times and stays out of trouble now days. Took only 4-5 years. |
We got Drake at 8 weeks and it took him about a week to master the stairs. Learning to go up was alot easier then going down. We carried Drake down for about the first week and then he wanted to follow the kids so bad he went down all by himself. It is funny because now the stairs are Drakes favorite place to be, I guess because it is the hub of the house and he likes to be the center of attention He likes to sleep with his head hanging off the top stair or curled up on the tile at the bottom. Drake also now has found a new thing to climb which is to the top of the kitchen table A BIG NO NO. I think his mom must have been breed with a mountain goat. I have heard people talking about table surfing but I did not think that meant actually getting on top of the table Your new puppy will surpise you at how fast they learn, just remember too take lots of pics because they grow up way too fast |
I am glad that they are good with stairs! He he he, mountain goat! I can't tell you how excited I am. It seems that the days are just dragging and the first week of May will not come fast enough! Thanks all for your fun replies! I love this forum! |
Not only did Frank master the stairs clumsily within the first week he also has somehow learned to pee on the stairs too. I bet you all are impressed now with my smart puppy!! |
I have tons of stairs in my home. When Merlin first arrived home I carried him down the back stairs to the yard for a few weeks and had the ones in the house blocked off with a baby gate so he wouldn't accidently fall down the steep stairs leading to the front door.
I found they worked fine for me. Eventually he had no problem going up and down them with ease...just around the time my old dog Shaggy could no longer master stairs so I carried her down for the last few weeks of her life. Going down is a lot harder for them than it is going up as such was the case with both young Merlin and old Shaggy. Someone once suggested placing the baby gate a few stairs down instead of on the top that way a baby or puppy can learn to master a few stairs without endangering themselves if the gate is SECURE. Good luck with your new arrival.. and can't wait to hear all about them! |
I have been looking into breeders closer to home, and I have found no one! The one in Missouri is really far away. Its a 20 hour drive and the airline tickets cost $400 per person! yikes! getting a little depressed. We even had a name picked out: Mopsey! Waaah |
Verve up have just giggled for ages. Its not going up stairs its coming down especially if Dougal has run off with something from the bedroom he shouldn't have like socks nickers he goes at speed so normally I have to try and get to the bottom first to catch him. luv pepe |
