What's your limit for # of animals in the home?

How many is too much for your family? If you'd like, you can break it down to dogs and cats (like 2 cats, 5 cats is way plenty).

For me, I think one small dog, two large dogs, and two cats would be perfect.

For my husband, it would be three OES' and 0 cats.

Question was brought on because we may foster a cat. It will be temporary. Well, that's the plan "for now." Hopefully this cat finds a permanent home and we never see her, but... we did volunteer our home.

Having two cats was nice.

Having 2 dogs and a cat is nice.

Soon I will know what its like to have two dogs and no cat. . . I imagine I will miss having a cat. Cats are very cozy and zen.
Right now I am baby sitting 3 dogs and 2 cats while my teacher and mother are away.

That's 4 dogs... 4 cats...

I love animals... but I wish I could kill them sometimes.

Personally, after this experience I think I could take another dog as long as we got it as a puppy like Momo, it really turned out for the best because I could mold her a little into a dog I could handle (quiet and bouncy).

I think I could deal with 2 more cats as long as they got along with my other cats (I have my ways).

I guess 2 dogs and 4 cats I could deal with...

But I am just happy to have my two little princes and I like having Momo be my big spoiled muffin.
We can't have cats as my oldest son is deathly allergic to cat dander - you know face swells up, eyes swell up and can't breathe type allergies.

So I can't help you there but I am thinking a bunch of sheepies will let you know exactly how many when I hit my limit.
I currently have 3 dogs and 3 cats, but one cat is not a permanent resident, he needs a home and soon! (He is pure black and a love bug if anyone is interested, he's about 5 months old now I think)

I definitely want more sheepdogs, I want a boy someday! :)
I'm just waiting for the right one to be born, somewhere, someday :)

I also would love to have a siamese cat again, I raised them for 15 years, and had my first siamese as a kid who lived to be either 17 or 20 (my Dad and I can't agree on how old it was, but my Dad said it lived long to spite him) So someday I might add a little siamese :)
We have one dog, Chipper
Two cats, Midnight & Tabi

Do hermit crabs, snails, lady bugs, beta fish count??

We have a zoo,,, sometimes I wonder if I could charge admission! LOL!
Well, let's see...

If you count all the ones we have collected from here and there, as well as the ones who just wandered up to the porch and my daughter started feeding them (cats) we now sport...

7 cats, 3 dogs (two OES and one lookalike), nine new puppies... and one fish. 8O

glad we got rid of that poodle...
We have two cats, two dogs, two monkeys... ;) That's enough for now.
I think it really depends on what the animals are like as far as coming up with a number of what's acceptable for a household not to mention the size of the house! I could probably have 6 dogs if they were all like Clyde, who's the easiest going of all of them now that he's a little older and has lost all the roughness of being a puppy. Bear and Lucy require more attention in a different way, plus Bear is like the size of 2 dogs!

Cats are so low maintenance, if you have 2, you may as well have 4 or 5. Either way you have to clean a litterbox.

That was Rosco's job when we had our Persian 8O . He wouldn't mind another cat: something to chase, great food to steal, and he's always willing to pitch in and clean the litterbox  That boy makes me so proud
After spending an evening clipping Mulligan down, I am happy to report that Joan thinks that 1 dog and 1 Ron are plenty.
We have 3 cats and 1 dog right now. Well, 2 cats, 1 dog, and one transitional cat (sitting for my brother--going on 6 months now!!)

I thought I wanted another cat (before we got my brother's) but to me, there is a BIG difference between 2 and 3 cats. Yikes--cats cats everywhere.

But it definitely depends on the personalities of the animals...
Before I had Ryan I had 3 dogs and 2 cats.
Then it was down to 2 after we gave Roxie's son to our best friend and It was Roxie & Peanut and and two cats. Then Roxie crossed the bridge.
We found out Ryan was allergic to the cats. So my ex took the one cat when we divorced. The other one was rehomed. and I got Peanut  :lmt: I would have rather had Tiger with me than Peanut with him. Too bad for Ryan's allergics :( I miss my kitties!!

Now it's 3 dogs, Rags, Pepsi and Peanut. No cats... 1 aquatic turtle (on his way to the pond at my SIL's house) and The 95 year old Desert Turtoise on his way in.
1 dog and 2 birds in my parents house. My Dad and I are both itching for a new puppy but my Mom and Walter would definitely not be pleased.

I have no pets in my apartment which is a total bummer, but I am allergic to cats and when I'm in shcool i do not have the time for a dog. But I have thought about it and once I graduate law school, get a job, and settle in I want to eventually have 4 dogs and 1 husband to take care of them while I work :D
My limit or Dougs limit? 8O

I think I'm pushing him with two dogs............I'd have a whole bunch 8)
7 dogs would be the limit...
that leaves room for one more 8) :D
We have 5 dogs and one cat in the house. 3 of the dogs are small - under 25 lbs. Thankfully we live on a farm, and they go outside with us and get lots of exercise. Todd and I also met at dog training classes, so having multiple dogs has never been a big issue! Tip-up the cat goes in and out. He has a litter box in the house, and eats in the hayloft (away from nosy dogs). He climbs up and down the ladder to the loft faster than we can - it looks pretty cool. Tip-up actually acts like a dog more than a cat, so he fits right in. He and Riley the rat terrier pup are both black and white and like to share a dog bed - they are cute together.
5 dogs was the limit until my sister said she wanted our next dog to be an OES. She said she had always wanted one. So we started looking and found an ad in the NC Ag Review. We should have stopped there. There was no way we could go home without one after seeing them. So Hannah Rose is dog #6. We also have 2 parakeets and 3 sheep.
At one point we had a Great Pyrenees for each sheep. Now we have 2 Pyrs who guard the house and couches, sheep? What sheep? 3 labs, one of which is Hannah's play mate. They play play play! It is a riot watching those two. We found out that it is easiest bringing in new dogs as puppies. They older girls seem to adjust better. They set the boundries and pecking order right off the get go, so we don't have the arguments and fights that an older addition may cause. That makes me kinda sad, because I'm very leary of trying to adopt a rescue. It should be A WHILE before we get any more critters. Sorry to be so long, but I just love these guys!

Husband's limits can always be pushed. This from the person who currently has 4 sheepdogs at their house.
  I'm working on it!!
I guess you could say that "our" limit is one dog and one turtle..

I would like a playmate for Panda, but Brian thinks that it would be too much for our small house.....
Well Hindsight is always 20/20...had I known what chaos this would cause in our lives, and the disputes between hubby and me...we should have stayed put with the 2 cats.

Instead I pushed it, to having 2 cats, 70 Gal fish tank, 4 finches that would have babies, then a dog.

The dog is where we had problems...so we tried different breeds before finding Remy. Had to let go of fish and birds...it was too much for me clean up after.

Then the guinea pigs...cute but NEVER again...they are so messy.

I keep thinking we should have 2 dogs and 2 cats...to keep the balance. But I question that all the time.

If we could live on a farm or an acreage...more animals would be okay, hubby would be fine if they could all live outside. But inside a small house, we have enough.

2 cats, 2 dogs, 1 guniea pig, 2 kids.
The two sheepies we have right now is the max! Getting Foz was completely a joint decision for us but he has added a ton more commotion to our home and peaceful way of living. We are anticipating that as he gets older, he won't require as much attention. With both of us working full time, I already feel badly that Foz is in his crate for about 4 hours at a time. It will be quite a change when I won't be able to come home at lunchtime for potty breaks.

We both have allergies so cats are out of the picture.
Well,

we are at 3 cats, 1 dog, 1 tank of fish... plus we're adding a pond outside with goldfish and hopefully wildlife...

We want one more dog, but that won't be till pip is older. I think 3 cats is a little much, but really she is Christina's not mine... No more cats until Iris goes... but I don't want to think about that. Here's hoping the Diva lives many more years!

I also want to add a horse, but that wouldn't live at the house
My household once included:
7 OES and an occassional litter of 10 - 12
3 Cockateils
2 Parakeets
1 African Grey
1 Oxlotle

It now includes: 2 adults, with lots of doggie memories
RIGHT NOW, in our smaller home, 2 cats and future puppy are enough if we continue to foster another dog!

In the future I think we could add another cat, making it 3, and have two more dogs, making that three.

When I grew up we had three cats, three dogs, two horses, and lots of fish! Soooo - for me it depends on where I'm living!
I have

- 3 dogs, one OES and two golden retrievers. Fred, my OES, was adopted from the SPCA, Owen, my golden retreiver, was my first and only foster dog, yes I am a foster parent failure, and Christian, my golden retreiver, was adopted from the Humane Society.

- 6 cats, two of the cats came from a rescue I did volunteer work for, the other four were taken in off of the street.

- 1 rabbit, he was about to be put down at the Humane Society.

- 2 cockatiels, one I purchased from a breeder, the other was adopted from a rescue after his elderly owner died.

-2 geese and 9 ducks.

I always say no more but then some animal shows up at my door. I think they see the word "sucker" imprinted on my forehead. :)

LOL!! :D I've said for years that there is an invisible sign on our front porch that only cats can see that says "Welcome, and Free food!"

That's funny! I've got the same sign at my house only any animal can read it.
Hi,

Yup my motto is always room for one more too....that big S sign is stuck on my forehead too!! Besides everyone knows cats and dogs have a language they share when it comes to where to go for a free meal. :D

Currently at home:
Blue, Merlin and Panda

The kitties, Asia (otherwise known as Mama Kat), Daisy, Paris, and Lil Girl

Puff the bunny and Squeak the Guinea Pig.

Recently joined small animal rescue and was asked to take two special needs bunnies on the 29th...which of course I said yes.

They also asked if I would take three Chinchillas but haven't replied yet as I know nothing about them and having another breed of pet, may even be more work on my already overloaded body....but you never know.

Lately I've been yearing for a kitten..been fighting the urge very hard..but if someone shows up at my door...well ...room for one more.

Better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all. And I'm certain Owen doesn't see you as a failure! My husband and I will probably get one more down the road at some point... we've talked about it. But he will not "allow" me to foster. Adopt? yes... Foster? NO! He KNOWS we would fail too.
