He has never been a "food hound" but would always come right to his bowl at meal time. Here lately he seems disinterested in eating. It used to be he came as soon as he heard me getting it ready. He is not missing any meals but, I have to call and coax him to his bowl. He has been getting 2 cups for breakfast and dinner. Do you think it is time to start cutting back on his food? Having to cut back is new. They just keep eating more and more when they are growing. How much should I cut back? Do you think a 1/4 of a cup per meal to start with? |

I don't think that is too much food for a dog his size. I would just let him decide how much to eat, maybe he's not as hungry lately because of the temperature if it is really hot where you are? |
The heat will definitely cut back on their appetite, especially this early in the year while adjusting to the heat.
I would cut back to a smaller amt, go by how much he will eat. The food will get soggy and stale if too much is in the dish - will make it unappealing even with a good appetite. You also may get bugs and ants in it if food is left out in the summer . It's easy to add more if he cleans up his bowl and looks like he wants more food . |
I don't think you should cut back unless he seems to be gaining weight. It really depends on how active a dog is too.
We give Frank 2 cups with a couple of tablespoons of cottage cheese in the AM and 2 cups with a couple of TBSP's in the PM. He's 87 lbs, gets at least a half hour of running around a day or more and he's at a perfect weight. If you do want to cut back, I would suggest adding green beans to his food so he still feels full with less calories. |
Wow! My guys would love 4 cups a day. They get about three and are doing just fine.
From time to time each of mine gets finicky but I can usually pin it down to a cause; medicine upset tummy, heat, etc. So start asking yourself if there's a problem. Cutting back grandually is fine, 1/4 cup sounds good. Keep an eye on the weight. My guys often drop some weight in summer as their appetite fades and they hunker down due to the heat. Come fall, they get hungry again. susan |
