Sam and Weight Gain

When we first got Sam he weighed 70 lbs, got shaved down and weighed in at 62 lbs (all per the vet's records) - this was at the end of April. I believe I mentioned then that we were concerned about his weight because his backbone and ribs were so pronounced and the vet agreed that he was very underweight.

As of today 1 1/2 mths later - shaved down 89 lbs. Our vet started laughing and said what a chunky monkey. He said not to worry about it but that if he puts on any more weight we will have to look at limiting his food intake (Sam still has food agression issues with Lucky - not us). We have been free feeding.

How do you put 1 out of 2 sheepdogs in the house on a diet? :lmt:

Also according to the vet Lucky is perfect. He has lost some weight but we just had him shaved down further for the summer so not sure if the weight loss is from the hair cut or not. Lucky is at 82 lbs but he is a few inches taller and longer than Sam.

Glacier is one of six, they all eat together. She's lost 50 lbs. She was one FAT Great Pyreneese!! We fed........and continue to feed her........canned green beans, unsalted. She still gets her dog food, but at half the amount we'd normally give her and then half a can of green beans at each meal. All eat twice a day. The weight just came right off! We also limited her cookies. Others got a whole cookie, she got a portion. Smart gal knew she was getting short changed and wasn't pleased.

This is the same dog who counter surfed and found a whole loaf of Greek sweet bread and polished it off in a matter of minutes. So we really have to keep and eye on her. She knows how to open the pantry, so only cans down low for her.

Panda had gained about 5 pounds because of the high fat prescription dog food she's on so we reduced the kibble by about 1/4 and substituted frozen green beans instead. (She has hip dysplasia so it's a big no-no to put additional strain on those bad joints.) When they get treats, Panda only gets half the portion of dog biscuits or homemade poochie cookies. The weight comes off then you readjust the portions again to maintain the weight.

If you free-feed both from one bowl though it might be hard to do if one doesn't need to loose any weight. :?

That's basically the same strategy that worked for Chummie, but instead of giving her a portion of a cookie, I switched them both to the puppy sized mother hubbard biscuits.

I feed them both at the same time in separate bowls that are across the room for each other. I make them do a sit/stay and put both bowls down and give them the OK, so they both start at the same time. Because Maggie eats fast and Chummie has less, they tend to finish up at the same time too.
We feed ours all seperately. The 2 min pins and rat terrier eat in their crates. Simon the Basset eats in the kitchen, Bart eats on the porch. I prepare all their bowls on the kitchen counter, then put the bowls down in the order listed above. They all know where they eat, and in what order they get their dishes - they all run to their spot and wait. It's hilarious!!

They have various dietary and medical needs, so it's important they each eat from their own dish. It may be wacky, but it works at our house.
